This is a hard review to write. And, I think it lends itself well to "Pro's and Con's":Pro's:Good subject. I would have liked the Lotus 7, but this is an Ideas kit - so we follow the mind of the creator. The overall aesthetic design is superb, and frankly some tricky design aspects were pulled off well. It's a great Ideas kit and also a great Lego automotive kit if one is focusing on that. The value is there too. It's worth (based on similar kits) about 10% more. This seems to be a challenge (getting the price point right) for Lego and I suspect licensing is usually the culprit. Here I think they came in under the bar. If Lego would make a set with all four - I would shell out 300 USD (but change the body colors). I wish they could keep things in production a bit longer - I digress....but there is a con.Con's:This has to be the most delicate kit I have ever gotten from Lego - and I certainly have built more than 100 of the larger kits over time. It's not for kids. It will fall apart while just inspecting it. That kinda baffles me coming from Lego - it is out of character. It's fine for a shelf - but not for play.

I'm generally a big fan of IDEAS sets and I've had my eye on this one for some time, but the price was holding me back. Given how fast IDEAS sets are retired (wall-e is already gone), I was worried I might miss this one. luckily, I grabbed it for 25% at a local Barnes and noble and needless to say I'm very impressed with the detail and overall look of this model. As with most ideas sets, there are plenty of cool printed parts (!), and luckily this set DOES have numbered bags, unlike the maze, so the build was much less frustrating. The completed model looks very true to the actual vehicle and fully incorporates the higher-level SNOT (studs not on top) building technique, producing a very professional looking final product. There isn't much playability though...but it does look great next to the creator MINI cooper and other cars of that scale.Unfortunately the only major issues for me are the nose cone often falling off (as many have reported on the eurobricks forum and other outlets) and the price. For a set of this size, $80 is just too much, despite the added detail. I can only recommend this at a sale price, but don't wait too long it could be retired soon and sell for hundreds on eBay.

I'm going to be honest with you, this is a fantastic model! Considering its at the level of the Creator Expert vehicles, this one comes at a good price and adds to that collection. The construction of the body is solid, and the extra features, details are fantastic.Just to point out to fans, this does go more towards being a display model, and not a model for kids to play with or to be used roughly.Great set, I'm very impressed with all the vehicle lines LEGO has come up with. I hope there are more to go! Looking forward to more Vehicle IDEAS too :)Note to fans (builders):- People have been complaining at the nose part apparently falling off easy, and honestly, I've had no issues with it. It is NOT missing, there is another similar piece that does not have the Caterham print, and people have not been paying attention during the build process and used the printed one by mistake when not the case...so when you get to putting the printed one on, you will think its missing! ;) My 2 cents :)

I have to say that there are a lot of very positive things to say about this model, so apologies if I miss any out.Firstly there is very little repetition within the model, its complex and somewhat challenging in places, and there are times when it feels like its going to be very fragile when complete but generally it comes together as a good solid build. At 770 pieces its going to take a little time to put together, it took me less than 3 hours whilst watching TV.There is plenty of detail and i particularly like the way that the front end, engine and cockpit comes together, all the pieces are printed rather than stickers which is a god send. The cockpit is a little fiddly but is worth it for the detail, and the finished model will move freely once ... Personally I've found these less than satisfactory and would have preferred to have the four stands attaching to two longer plates or accept that there was no stand at all.Overall a brilliant little build and is worthy of any lego collection.
Well, now you can, thanks to the latest addition to the LEGO Ideas line of models. I love (nearly) everything about this set, but to keep my review relatively short, I'll just list the pros and cons with a brief summary at the end.Pros:+ fun build-up with some clever solutions+ very detailed, good looking model+ excellent value for your money+ impressive parts list+ displays really well+ printed elements (!)Cons:- barely different shade of yellow in some of the bricks- minor, stability-related issuesI already have a few large models (Blue Power Jet, Mini Cooper, Ferrari F40, VW Beetle), but this was my first ever Ideas set and I'm not disappointed at all: in fact, it just might be my favourite one yet. From the moment of opening the (equally good looking and sturdy) box through the assembly of the car I had a blast!Although I have given 5 hours for the whole process, that already includes sorting the pieces and admiring the ingenious techniques employed every now and then. The building itself isn't particularly hard, but because of the sheer number of parts used it can be a bit time-consuming. I'm not complaining though, for it was fun from beginning to end.I've listed the presence of the printed elements as last in the pros section, but actually that was the primary driving force behind the buy. I absolutely loathe applying stickers, so it just adds to the exclusive-feeling and value of the set. (I wouldn't mind if this habit was carried over to at least the Creator Expert line, if not all models.)My only problems are, as I mentioned previously, the slight difference between the shades of some of the yellow pieces (although it isn't nearly as noticeable as in the greens of the Mini Cooper) and the "rickety-ness" of the dashboard and nosecone (which were already noticed by others and can be fixed quite easily), but overall they are not too bad.
Don't get me wrong--this is a fantastic set. The Caterham Seven is one of my favourite cars, and since I'll never build a real one, this is the next best thing.I really enjoyed the construction, and everything went together very smoothly. There were a few things I modified to improve fit and finish, but that's part of the fun. More importantly, there were so many extra parts in the box that I was able to tweak with what I had available. The engine detail is fantastic, and the hood pops on and off with ease. The removable trunk hood and roll bars are also great. The reason this gets four stars is that I don't think yellow and black are the best colour choices. You can't see any detail in the all-black interior, which swallows the light. In contrast, the seams in the yellow body panels are really obvious, particularly on the rear fenders. A darker body might have hidden the gaps better. I like the yellow, but I think I would have liked blue or red even more.I want to replace some of the flat panels in the seats to add colour to the interior, and maybe change some of the dashboard panels. And again, that's part of the fun. This is a great success for the Ideas program, and well worth the money for any Caterham/Lego fans.
This was a gift for my birthday from my son. I have enjoyed modifying Lego sets for several years of he thought this would be something I would like. This was my first build of an Ideas set, but will not be my last.Truthfully, I had supported this set on the Ideas siteKudos to the fan and designers at Lego for this set. The build experience was great fun. Over the course of two evenIngs. I did make a couple of modifications to my set. My hood, bonnet or what ever you call it locally did not want to fit as built. I swapped the black 1x2 plate in front of the assembly for black single studs to allowroom for the rounded part of the hinge to fit. I also used two behind the steering wheel for a little separation from the gauges.I used the same part in yellow to ... MoreThis was a gift for my birthday from my son. This is the weakest LEGO kit I've ever assembled! The finished model is very fragile with sub assemblies that fall off at the slightest touch. I've done an awful lot of LEGO building. I would be categorized as an expert, experienced builder, so I'm quite certain that the model is correctly assembled. I also find fault with the instructions. This designer often does things in a sequence that is more difficult than necessary when there are obvious choices that are superior. In short, this set doesn't measure up to even minimum LEGO standards. There are much better sets available. Buy good ones and have the fun you're supposed to have with these wonderful toys.
This was my first non-Star Wars build and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was on sale at another online retailer plus an additional credit, so I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger at the full retail price (since I primarily do Star Wars).Anyway, the build was fun and the detail is nice...I'm accustomed to using stickers for any detail so it was refreshing that these are all pre printed tiles. As others have noted, the nose cone could be secured a bit better and seems like it comes off easy. As far as playability, this is more of a "model" than a functional toy, but I'm used to that with the UCS sets. I think the color could have been a more roadster color (green, red, dark blue) but the yellow is a nice contrast. One of my favorite aspects are the printed ... I may be delving more into the Lego cars to bide my time until the additional Star Wars sets are released. Looking forward to the Saturn V that should be delivered this week.
I got this set on Ebay in 2020, after it had retired, and it was almost as good as I hoped. The color scheme and lack of stickers is nice, and the engine and engine bay is phenomenal. The overall shape is good, too and the exhaust pipe is clever. The hood and trunk are not secured on well, but they still stay in place surprisingly well. However, the headlights, front mudguards, and dashboard feel loose and the heavy front piece is always falling off. And when the model is up on it's flimsy stilts, the slightest pressure is applied and DISASTER. The seatsand the transmission cover pop off, and the model partially breaks in half and is hard to fix. NOT good. Also, the model's playability can barely compete with a speed champions set- the front wheels are attached to ... This set is strictly a display model. If you are looking for a display set or something for you'r antique car club, this is the set for you. If you want something to play with, I suggest the Creator Expert Ford Mustang or James Bond Aston Martin DB5.
