I grew up with Voltron (was a Voltron character for Halloween in 1985) so I think I was excited as my son when this set came out. We bought as soon as we were able to. It was so worth it.The set is incredibly detailed and really looks like the Voltron I remember and my son loves. The individual lions are great and the put-together Voltron is amazing.Build: The build is a bit complex so it was one I took lead on with assistance from the 9-year-old. I was pleased to note that their were only 5 stickers for the entire build, but found myself wondering why those 5 couldn't have been printed on little 2x2 flat plates. Another plus was that there are separate instruction books for each lion plus one for the sword, shield, and assembling Voltron.Play: My son was able ... He was in heaven and has been playing with him constantly since. It is also sparking creativity, since he already has plans to build (from his imagination) beasts for Voltron to fight.Cost: At $179 it is definitely worth the price, but not exactly a deal. Well worth it for Voltron fans, especially if you have a second generation fan in the house! If you are a collector, this is one of the coolest sets once complete I've seen in a while.

When I had seen that this was approved as an official LEGO set, to say I was excited is an understatement. Being a kid who grew up with this show in the 80's, this was one of the many toys that I had always wanted but could never buy. Being a VIP member, I ordered it as soon as we were able to.The level of detail and the unique ways that the parts interlock to make it sturdy is great. Parts were used in ways that I wouldn't have envisioned even with my many years of building LEGO sets. Specifically, how the shoulder joints were made to be strong enough to hold a pose was impressive. That said, I feel that this set somehow leaves a bit to be desired with regards to how pose-able it is. The arms and head are pose-able to a good degree, but other than that it's ... MoreWhen I had seen that this was approved as an official LEGO set, to say I was excited is an understatement. The arms and head are pose-able to a good degree, but other than that it's pretty much a giant brick. I understand that LEGO designers need to make sure that it lives up to standards that they set forth for durability, but anyone who's watched the original version of this show is not a child anymore and most of us are getting this for nostalgia and/or collecting. Build it, pose it and leave it is what we're going to do with it. I already have a few ideas that I'm going to incorporate into this set to give it more flexibility. That's not to say this is a bad set. It's well worth the cost and it is truly impressive in how accurately they were able to match the 1980's version of Voltron. I highly recommend this set to anyone who is or was a fan of Voltron.

This was one of the most innovative, fun models I have ever built. It is simply a design miracle that the five individual lion models actually transform and join together to form the Voltron mech!Building each lion was fun, and the separate bags and instruction booklets made it possible for shared building. Each lion was a unique build, and the bright color scheme made for engaging building (some monotone models can become tedious). The lions transform and connect easily and quickly, and the connection points and techniques used are incredibly innovative and strong. Voltron stands on its own, and can be posed brandishing a giant brick-built chrome sword and shield. Just as cool is posing the lions separately, as they make for terrific display pieces as ... I was a lucky boy to have the Japanese made Voltron toy set back in the 80s when Japanese robot/mech cartoons were at the peak! This Lego set combines my favorite toy (Lego) and my favorite robot set.Credit to the designers, this set is terrific! It is hard enough to model any robot/mech character using Lego bricks, let alone one that has 5 individually built lions that transforms and combines into one big robot! The temptation would be to use many custom bricks like the Porsche GT3 but no! The designers managed to model a lot using existing bricks and that's a joy when building it. I cannot believe how simple and effective the eyes are modeled using basically coloured standard bricks! The designers also made special efforts on the shoulder join, which I think is ... I cannot believe how simple and effective the eyes are modeled using basically coloured standard bricks! The designers also made special efforts on the shoulder join, which I think is another inspired idea. The legs of the finished robot can't move but I can hardly blame them as this is a very heavy piece that would have required some very meaty joint mechanism! Otherwise I can't fault this set, including a very reasonable price!
The quality of the materials is very good, and the case looks good once constructed. However, it's all good news... The instructions are terrible, and quite frankly it's a waste of time including them. Also, despite holes in the base, Voltron doesn't properly fit in them so isn't secure in the case (though no more insecure than with no case). Finally, having paid extra for the premium background, I was disappointed to find that I had to fit it myself. Given the size of the adhesive, it was very difficult to attach it properly. Finally, not related to the case itself, but the extremely long delivery times (10 weeks) and terrible communication should be taken into account when ordering.
Grew up in the 80's with Transformers, Voltron, & Gobots all running a close tie behind what I'd have to admit was my overall favorite toy - LEGO's. While I've been eyeing a lot of the Creator Expert/modular building sets lately, my last LEGO set was the 1:10 Enzo Ferrari. The moment Voltron was announced, I knew I'd be pulling the trigger, no more sitting on the fence. Then I saw it in the window at my local LEGO store, & it was a done deal within 2 minutes. This is a truly exceptional set. Spent about 8-10 hours putting it together with a few breaks. Considering the difficulty of recreating Voltron & making it look like the real thing, this is a great design & build. While you come across a few little things here & there, they really nailed it. Considering the difficulty of recreating Voltron & making it look like the real thing, this is a great design & build. While you come across a few little things here & there, they really nailed it. My main gripe is the lion legs popping off a bit too easily, but hey, if you make a set this large, design it this well, & keep the price reasonable - I can't even call that a complaint. You'd have to up the scale considerably to address the issue. That said - Please give us a massive Voltron just like you did with the Millennium Falcon! In the spirit of perfect 80's-themed sets to offer, I'd really love to see more "combiners" like Transformers' Devastator & Predaking. LEGO would once again have my money as fast as I could hand it over. Also, the DeLorean from "Back To The Future" as a 1:8 or-so model seems like a *total* no-brainer, universal among different age groups, & fortunately unchanged over the years. Please... Please do it! :)
The display case is really huge, adequate for the size of Voltron's set. There are always no precise instructions, but having mounted others in the past, after several attempts, it is easy to mount it.Attention should always be paid to the adhesive background which is difficult to position correctly due to the size of the adhesive. The room for maneuver to correctly position Voltron inside the display case is very limited, and unfortunately, despite the specific recesses on the bottom, the robot does not stand up straight ...I have remedied with a transparent recovery plastic shim, positioned behind that cannot be seen and holds in the voltron position.the product as always has superior quality materials and aerospace packaging, so it justifies the high cost.
Let's the get the bad stuff out of the way -- this may not apply to you, but my stickers weren't printed properly. The image on the sticker wasn't centered exactly, so even if you apply the sticker DEAD center on the tile properly, it makes the print look off center. I'll be mentioning this to LEGO customer service and I'm sure they'll help so I'm not going to rant about it. It's an issue so I figured I should mention it.Now on the great stuff:Just when I think I've seen the most clever connections/building techniques LEGO can throw at me, they go on and blow me away again! The angle of the legs on the black lion, the way Voltron's wings attach, the shoulder assemblies, again on the black lion, all sheer genius! And you want to talk about SOLID. Each lion felt ... Each lion felt like it's own solid build and together as Voltron they're just as solid.Sure, there's not a ton of limb articulation, which some will scoff at, but given the scale I don't fault them one bit for that. Besides, as far as playing with Voltron goes it's the FORMING VOLTRON! that's the most exciting. All my kids want to see is me switching him between Voltron and the separate lions. They flew the lions around a bit (like 10 seconds) and then say "Let's form VOLTRON.... AGAIN!"I wish there was a 4.9 star level because while this set is AMAZING, it's juuuuuuust shy of the perfection of the Saturn V rocket. Only just.
I wanted to like this set better than I do. I'm probably seeing more issues as I'm an avid Voltron fan, and this set just doesn't quite capture Voltron magic. The build starts out strong with the Yellow and Blue lions, and they're the strongest of the batch. Each is a solid build, and produces an independently playable toy... although the legs are a bit flimsy and prone to breaking off.The Red and Green lions are also very good... although they're limited in detail by the scale, and range of motion in the joints is minimal. Decent standalone toys, but not great.Unfortunately, the set really falls apart with the Black lion. It's solid, and large, and holds together well... but it's really just Voltron's body, and not really a standalone toy. They legs have very ... MoreI wanted to like this set better than I do. It's solid, and large, and holds together well... but it's really just Voltron's body, and not really a standalone toy. They legs have very limited mobility, and the head and neck also lack range of motion due to the need to conceal Voltron's head inside. But the biggest issue is with the front legs, and the attachment points for the Red and Green lion... on each side. a large gear mechanism just hangs off the side, unconcealed. Hugely disappointing. The combined Voltron is pretty good though, and it's clear that compromises were made on the Black lion to make Voltron, as a whole, a better combined robot. The arm mechanisms are solid and can maintain (limited) poses. Voltron holds together well (although legs of the individual lions pop off way too easy). The shield is *excellent* and better implemented that I could have imagined. The blazing sword is a disappointment through, as it's detailed only on one side.. although the detail that's there is nice. Lastly, Voltron as a whole generally has so much more "chrome" than this set, and the gray just isn't a good replacement.I'm glad Lego made a Voltron, but it didn't quite meet expectations. And due to the limitations, it will sit on a shelf, rather than allowing my son to play with it.
This is my first LEGO set I have ever purchased as well as built. I was looking for something at work to do in between calls. The moment I laid eyes on this set I said wow Voltron looks amazing. As a first time builder I appreciated one manual for each lion and separated bags to open one at a time.
