One IR receiver, remote, battery box, and 2 motors, which alone costs under $50 somehow adds over $100 to the set. (If going by the average10 cents per piece)- If you just want this for the wheels, but the 42054 tractor set, it has four of them for a much better price.- The crane in back of the truck is disappointingly small and the set contains no cargo.-The set includes a new shade of blue, the third new shade of light in technic three years straight making it hard for us collectors.-No suspension-Looks crude and unfinished, especially the cargo bed seeing that there are holes everywhere in it. It looks very ugly.-Only has a V4 engine for a massive truck.42050 drag racer has a V8 engine and costs five times less! Not saying that I won't more engine pieces, but it just doesn't make sense.-Doesn't work well outside in bumpy areas, it gets stuck to easily and the remote can't be more than five feet away from the model.-The B-model manages to be even worseOverallA very disappointing model especially for the flagship model of the 40th anniversary of Technic and extremely overpriced for no apparent reason. Below I am comparing this model with some previous models, sets that are cheaper and more well worth your money42070 Tow Truck: 1862 pieces, $289.99 (USD)conclusion: 15.5 cents per piece horribly overpriced42069 Extreme Adventure: 2382 pieces, $179.99conclusion: This set is a more worthy candidate for this years flagship model. Not only does it have 500+ more pieces it also costs $110 dollars cheaper!42055 Bucket Wheel Excavator: 3929 pieces, $279.99conclusion: Last year's flagship model costs $10 cheaper, but has three times the amount of pieces! Really Lego? What were you THINKING?!?!? This set has a much better use for your money.42054 Tractor: 1977 pieces, $179.99conclusion: You get one hundred more pieces for a hundred dollars cheaper. What more can I say?42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs: 2793 pieces, $229.99conclusion: 900+ more pieces costing $60 less. This set also happens to be one of my top three favorite Lego sets of all time, so I'd definitely recommend this to especially since it'll retire soon.8043: Motorized Excavator: 1123 pieces, $199.99conclusion: I wanted to include at least one other remote controlled set, so since i have this one, I thought that I'd use it for this comparison. Although it has 700 less pieces it does cost $90 less, and is even fully remote controlled. The power functions alone cost about $90 which makes this set a pretty decent deal.If by now you don't agree with me on how bad this set is you either really want to support Lego or you are just too optimistic. $290 is a waste of money on this set, and I'd highly recommend any of the sets listed above. All Technic sets this year in general have been disappointing, (with the exception of 42069 Extreme adventure and 42063 BMW Adventure) especially after the great wave of sets that came last year. Lego has said that this is because that they had three licensed sets last year and only one this year. However, I don't think this is the case. Shouldn't it make the licensed sets more expensive? Even with the small increase from a total of $1163 to $1200 the price per part range has increased from 8.9 cents per piece (12,934 pieces) to 11.4 cents per piece.(10,526 pieces)I hope Lego will learn from these mistakes and continue to improve over last year's sets. I can't wait to see what they have next, but let's just hope we don't have another year like this.

I really liked this set. The truck looks really cool, and unlike a lot of other expensive lego technic sets, this one has remote control built in. This is really important if you care about playing with the lego after building it. You can spend countless hours controlling it and driving it around your house. If I got this for a present I would have been more than happy - unfortunately, I had to buy it for myself. As far as playability is concerned, I think this is one of the better lego technic sets, especially at it's price point. It took a fair amount of time to build, I built it over a weekend. You see a lot of negative reviews written by other adults who are huge fans of lego (like myself). They mostly stem from the fact that this is considered a "flagship" model, and even moreso, this is the 40th anniversary lego technic flagship model. They aren't judging it by the play value of this set, but rather comparing it to every lego technic that came before it. Could you get a more realistic lego technic set, with more features, and at a cheaper price point? Sure, but that's not why I bought this. I bought it because it looked cool (albeit unrealistic), and it's extremely fun to play with. I couldn't be more happy with my purchase.

What a great kit! The build overall was very satifiying with many different powered mechanisms running through the main frame. Once complete you have a beautiful blue all terrain recovery truck that actually does what it's supposed to and does it great! The boom crane is strong and can upright my overturned EW160 or Claas Xerion tractor, check out pic. It also looks great with a mean stance on 6 all terrain look tires. The outriggers are strong and do thier job well. In driving mode it runs good quicker than I expected ans easily goes over our indoor obstacle course. My 3 yo son and I are having a great time running it I reccomend it to everyone who enjoys Technic.A tip for future builders, turn the string before you tie the knot to the boom so the 2 hook lines ... This is the biggest Technic set I have tacked since the space shuttle decades ago. Following on from the Tracked Racer last year this is my second Technic RC.The build took a long time and was a good challenge. It has a lot of pieces and some complex gearing mechanisms that require concentration and are very interesting to put together. I kept double checking the gears as I was building the model wondering if I had made a mistake but it turned out fine.Learning how the gears all work together and switch between the different functions was the most fun part of the build and I found this rewarding in itself. It is great to see things like proper differentials making it into a Lego model. The finished model looks great. I love the blue colour but did not like the dark dishes for the wheels so I left them yellow. I think the blue and yellow go together well. The bear on the front is a nice touch and the chains add to the scale look of the model. The engine although a little small for the truck has pistons that move as the truck moves which I thought was a nice touch.I do think more could be done with the bed at the back of the truck. I see the advantage of leaving it open so that the gears can be seen but a removable flat cover so things could be loaded onto it would have been nice.As for the motorized side of things the truck moves and turns well enough and can navigate over some small dips and bumps. The outriggers and crane all operate smoothly but you do need to flick a switch on the model to switch between these modes. If I had any suggestions regarding the motorized side of the model it would be that the drive train could do with a little more grunt. As I said with the Tracked Racer I would also like to see Lego offer an 2.4Ghz alternative to the IR transmitter and receivers at some point. All in all this is one of my favorite builds of recent years. It was fun and challenging to build as well as a great model to play with afterwards.
I've bought the flagship set for the past 13 years and enjoyed this build a lot! The chassis system is packed with gears and mechanisms which is always fun to figure out what they'll be doing along the way.The body is exactly like what it looks like in all the photos so it wasn't a surprise when certain areas were a little lighter on parts than usual. The body (or shell) is important but I feel for most Technic enthusiasts it's the mechanics that are the draw and it that area of this set does not disappoint. If your priorities are on the looks you would be better to by a Creator set. There are also some cool new parts; nice blue panels and obviously the giant tires. Having worked on big old trucks and heavy machinery I'd like to point out that a four cylinder engine is really used in a lot of them (even bulldozers) and are quite powerful. They get their power from being big cylinders, having many cylinders doesn't add much to the power, it does make for a smoother ride. The price was high but you know that when you buy it, and the truck is just what it looks like. I was happy with the set and would definitely buy it again.
The criticism regarding this model has been widely covered. Simply put, it was all over the place, excelling in precisely zero categories. It's a model that's too complex for beginners, and too bland for experienced builders. Functions are ok but limited. Sections of it are finished and/or cool, others are grossly unfinished. The list goes on for every aspect of the set. Wheels and stabilizers are very nice though, and unlike others I really like the dark azure color, although it was the opposite of needed. But the price is beyond absurd. I bought it because it had some interesting parts and techniques and I got it at 45% discount, but I made it and disassembled it the same day.I got excited at certain points during the build, but towards the end I was ... This was barely worth being the main model of the first part of the year, let alone the flagship. And given this was Technic anniversary year, the taste left is more than sour.
I'm not sure what the reviewers who rated "below average" were expecting from this set. Yes - it's over-priced - but I was fortunate to get it from a local independent toy store for £150 which I felt was a more reasonable price! The build is very satisfying, not least because the bags are not numbered. The pieces are bagged by type / colour so you need to sort ALL 1800 pieces before you start! In my case that meant "decanting" them into zip-lock bags so they would be easier to find during the build. It also meant I could seal them up and pack them back in the box and take my time with the build over 4 nights. The open floor pan is not a problem for me. I like being able to the see the gears and axles working when you operate the various power functions, particularly the outriggers. The range of functions available, and having them remote controlled, makes this worthy of 40th Technic Anniversary Flagship status. And my 2 and a half year old grandson absolutely loves it !!!! (Maybe that's the best endorsement of all)
The greatest feature of this model is its size. Unfortunately its value for money is poor. For play value it has 6 switchable motorised functions but the steering ought to use a Servo motor instead so that it would centre properly for accurate driving. This would have added to the cost so I can see why it was not used. The suspension is basic, with just the rear axles rocking. When 42043 had good suspension on all wheels, there is no excuse for missing it out here. This set does make use of the ability of the wheel bearing frames to house a reduction gear though.A measure of play value is a function for every £10 and a motorised function for every £20. This set does make use of the ability of the wheel bearing frames to house a reduction gear though.A measure of play value is a function for every £10 and a motorised function for every £20. It's not far off with 6 motorised functions and a few other manual functions but the gear switching could have been made automatic. I have previously made gearboxes where a medium motor selects the functions and another motor powers the selected functions. Ideally this set would have had a 4-way selector for the crane and outriggers with separate motors for drive and steering, similar to 42030 front loader. For parts value I usually assess sets on the basis of price per piece, first subtracting the price of the Power Functions parts to put sets on a level playing field. Since the panels are such a large part of some sets I also subtract the panels at and average £1/panel. This set scores poorly for price per piece from the remainder of the parts, so it is not one to use as a "stocking up" set. I expected twice the number of pieces for the price - compare with 42055 which also has a motor and plenty of panels. The blue colour is vivid, and represented in real trucks of this type, but it is not a colour I would re-use for my own models. Why are there four shades of blue in Technic but too little of other colours such as green and orange? The lack of re-use for my own creations makes it more difficult to justify as a purchase; what I would re-use is the colours to make Technic models for previous Space themes, which some other sets have.Having bought a few of the excellent 42043 and 42054 I have plenty of sliders and big wheels already, which are the other major parts representing significant cost in the set.As an experienced Technic builder I also have plenty of Power Functions parts from other sets; they are available separately. For pure value, this set could have missed them out and made their addition optional, with an improvement to the basic price. Perhaps it was trying too hard to be all things to all people, which often results in too many compromises.Compared to previous flagship sets such as 42043 and 42055 this is not in the same league. Please do better with your designs and don't compromise too much; I would welcome a Technic set with at least 5000 pieces, perhaps 8000 to beat the new Millennium Falcon, as long as the motorised functions work well and the value is good for both playability and parts.Of this years second-half sets I preferred 42069, which has more pieces for less money and would have qualified as a flagship set itself in previous years. I also look forward to 42068 soon.If you want a basic introduction to truck crawling and like the colour then this set is OK but if you have many other sets then it's a discount-only purchase, a struggle even at 20% off. The truck could be modified to improve its performance in its intended role, with the addition of extra motors and a reduction in the complexity of the drive train to the wheels, to enable the torque to get to where it is needed. A few AFOLs have done that, some using different colours.Other uses for the vivid blue panels might include a boat; I can't think of many uses for this colour. They are similar to those in the dragster 42050.I was also worried about the colour changes for some of the regular functional parts. Some have appeared in red or brown in this set. That is OK as long as they will always be available in grey, dark grey or black. We must not force LEGO Technic to become like K'Nex with only a single colour of each piece available, where the contrasting colours prevent the building of decent models with unified colour schemes like their real prototypes. I accept the policy of using an available colour left over from another set production run where the pieces are hidden, but I find that some limits of peg and axle colours are compromising the aesthetics too much; I worry that such a trend is creeping into other functional parts such as brackets.Unfortunately I could not recommend this set to a wide range of people. The poor value for money is the main drawback.
This is a truly exceptional kit. The engineering that went into developing this model is obvious as you go through the build. There are numerous functions that are integrated into a superior drive train and transmission. There are gears a plenty and more levers than I have ever seen in any of the other Technic models that I have built; some of them twice. The operation of the mechanisms is clear and observable during remote operation. The build is very complicated and not meant for the faint of heart. You MUST pay special attention to the pictures and, in many instances, rely on experience building Technic kits as there are places where the assembly is not clear. Several times I had to backtrack in order to correct an error when I was on a later step and was ... MoreThis is a truly exceptional kit. My enjoyment with Legos is the assembly and the final operation of the mechanisms and this model delivers on both better than even the Porche.
I bought this set along with the Extreme Adventure. I was excited for months to get this set. All the pictures and videos hyped it up so much. A full remote PF set, which hasn't been seen on a large set since the Volvo loader.Getting into the build it was usual for a large set. One thing that baffled me was the use of so many different colors on the frame. This was the first set I was missing a piece from. Once the building was done, I took it for a little spin. It moves as fast as the Volvo loader, but that's where the similarity stops. The selector switches are complete garbage. I actually thought I was going to snap them off. I was able to find the lever down under the cab and switch it there. Using one remote, you only get 1/4 of the functions at a time. ... MoreI bought this set along with the Extreme Adventure. Switch a lever and you get outriggers and crane up/down, same lever and it's winch/crane rotation. As far as looks, this is a nice looking set, reminds me of a 5-ton Army truck. Good selection of headlights, tail/marker, and caution lights. But, really, this set is lacking on so many areas. The interior is garbage, the bed area is open and looks unfinished. I could go on but other reviews may point them out. Guessing the designer took a sick leave and the Janitor finished up this project. Hopefully this is an exception and not a new standard..
