Over the years, I've felt Lego Technic slipping in quality, and it's large models aren't as intricate as back in 2005-2013. Each Technic now just feels either lazily done, or more about how it looks over it's functions. But this set is an exception (along with the Porsche). This reminds me of 8285, the Tow Truck back in 2006, only much better improved. The cab has no holes to expose the interior, and with what holes it has, it's covered as much as it could be with LEGO limitations, where most models nowadays are riddled with holes making them all look unfinished. And I really love the custom made engine block. First time I've ever seen that, and I would love to see V-6's and V-8's custom made, if possible of course. The trailor also reminds me of 8285's secondary model, but again, much better improved. For the most part. I still cannot get past the new, unnecessary new pieces, such as the red gears. And of course the out triggers could've been custom made like 42009, Mobile Crane MK II (which I personally think is the last, best makeshift model). You've done it before, and it was outstanding, and instead of continuing that, you made these unnecessary, bulky... eugh. And not as many functions as past models, but at least the functions aren't made like all these newer models where you need to switch to one gear to get the other ones working. That's SOOO lazy. But I digress. All in all, this set IS a breath of fresh air, and it's really fun to build, and the end result is fantastic. Despite my gripes, I'm very certain Technic fans will love this one.

So I have wanted this build for nearly a year, but never got around to buying it, there was always another set I wanted more heh.I got lucky buying this, since it is now apparently a discontinued line and I seemingly got the last 1. Took 2 days to put together, which is what I expect with a set this big, plenty of spare parts too, always handy. It is alot bigger than I expected and that is always a big bonus, for the price you pay for technics, it's always disappointing when they are smaller than expected.Only con I can find with this set really is that there is no motor integration options... would have liked to be able to add a motor to control the cranes on the trailer... That would be an issue with it coming from the supplier warehouse. Lego replace these usually with a few extra spare parts as a sorry, free of charge.I was very happy with the price, cheaper than anywhere else. very fast delivery, was expected on Tuesday, arrived on Saturday. Can't give this product or the level of service anything less than a 5 star, I literally cannot find a fault with anything.

This set is fantastic, I was pleasantly surprised with the level of functionality especially on the trailer, the build itself is detailed and at times a bit fiddly but that’s why you buy technic. It took me around 7 and a half hours to build the set in one sitting and I enjoyed every minute. The truck is detailed and a brilliant match to the styling of the genuin truck. I love the steering and differential. The trailer is the selling point for this set for me. I love all the different functions and how easy it is to control. I will however say once it is made the lift is not quite long enough to drop the container off in one easy motion and when it is at full extension the gears do slip under the containers Waight. These aren’t the end of the world and don’t ... MoreThis set is fantastic, I was pleasantly surprised with the level of functionality especially on the trailer, the build itself is detailed and at times a bit fiddly but that’s why you buy technic. It took me around 7 and a half hours to build the set in one sitting and I enjoyed every minute. This is a five star product because it is Lego. This is a really good size of Lego toy and my grandchildren have had hours of fun after I had hours of enjoyment taking it apart first and then putting it back together. Everything was there so I wasn't looking for pieces that weren't there. The item was well packed up so no damage came to it and no pieces went missing. Thank you.
It was cool to see this offering for 2018, a big fan of technic trucks. I also have the Acros Truck too and it would be good to compare the two The build was straight forward but it took some time. The most intense part was building the cab, there were a lot of small parts for it construction.Comparing it against the Acros, there are two main differences, one is the control of the vehicle. The Mack control system is more stable than the Acros, where the Acros system gives you the feel it was going to break based on the tension being applied.the accessibility to the engine is relativity the same as the Acros.I was initially disappointed with the engine in the Mack, using standard pieces to build the cylinders rather than the engine mimics as in other products. ... MoreIt was cool to see this offering for 2018, a big fan of technic trucks. But after building it I was quite happy with the turnout, gives you a nice clicking sound and is the right size.I find the hitch to be strong in the Mack, the Acros kept falling off during the drive. What I do not understand is the insertion of the bed in the cab with no easy access to use it.The mechanisms for the cargo hold is nice, I think it was best not to include the motors, the movement is overall very strong and stable through the whole process. While I like the pumps and motors, the can complicate the designFor playing, I find the engine hood to be sensitive with part easily falling off.As with Acros, I have some parts missing.now on to the garbage truck... :-)
The cool Mack Anthem truck was my second true LEGO build in my life. Due to the generosity of a brother-in-law, I had the honor, privilege and enjoyment of building the NASA Apollo Saturn V rocket. What a great build and, of course, I was now hooked on LEGO! He bought me the rocket, so I returned the generosity by buying him the Porsche. What a guy! Being hooked, I needed to find my next project and, in consultation with my brother-in-law, selected the Mack Anthem.I am not a marathon LEGO builder...maybe taking one package of parts at a time or working on it in spurts. My brother-in-law doesn't understand this. I did take my time and did make mistakes when I rushed things a bit. And compared to the Saturn V, the build was more challenging for me. My brother-in-law doesn't understand this. I did take my time and did make mistakes when I rushed things a bit. And compared to the Saturn V, the build was more challenging for me. In the end, it is a beautiful piece of work and really impressive.I have only one negative comment about the truck. With chrome and shades of gray available, I don't understand why the iconic Mack bulldog hood ornament comes in gold/baby poop yellow. Given the crispness of the lines and decals and the overall color scheme of the Mack, I find the yellow bulldog standing out like a sore thumb. Therefore, while visiting my brother-in-law (my PLP or Primary LEGO Physician, aka LEGO Doctor), he was kind enough to paint it silver. Now it looks like it belongs! Even if the bulldog couldn't be provided in chrome, it, at least, should have been in a shade of gray.Back to my LEGO doctor. One of the rear wheel assemblies fell off and for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to re-attach it. So, knowing I was heading to Raleigh to visit my brother-in-law, I took the truck with me to obtain his guidance. The doctor not only repaired it, but also showed me where I had gone wrong in building the assembly initially. Good, understanding LEGO doctors are hard to find!During the "appointment," I also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the truck tended to tip when the container was fully extended towards the ground. I groused that LEGO had really messed up by not making the stabilizers actually functional. This is a comment other Mack truck builders have made. But, again, the good doctor came through, by showing me that, indeed, the legs (or arms) quietly click into place, thereby ensuring that the truck does not tip and the rear wheel assembly does not fall off. My "co-pay," it turns out, was the just released James Bond Aston Martin DB5. Worth every penny! Thanks, Doc.
Everyone who has seen this has taken it off the shelf and played with it, it looks outstanding! The hardest part of the build is the fourth set of bags, I spent about four and a half hours on it.My favorite part of this is thae way the steering wheel tilts and turns as the steering on the rear of the truck is turned. The hood tilts up showing the engine which is not the usual V engine, it is a nice look.My only real complaints are that the antennae on the doors come off easily as does the front of the truck. I can't let most people play with it as they are not going to be careful with it. Also the cranes have a problem lifting the cargo container, maybe I am not doing it right, but the cargo box with the chains almost tips the truck over when taking the ... MoreEveryone who has seen this has taken it off the shelf and played with it, it looks outstanding! The steering and the engine are a welcome change. Whoever designed this it looks great and the steering is cool to play with. The engine is nice to look at. The outriggers and winches are not ideal for me.All in all, I love this for display.
The 2017 Technic releases didn't appeal to me, (thank goodness that there was plenty in the Creator series to fill the gap) so I was very pleased when this came out at the beginning of 2018. I had to wait three weeks for it to arrive but it was worth it.On opening the box I initially thought I would be disappointed at the size of this model based solely on the wheel size, the picture on the box is a great deal bigger than the model, but the end result is terrific.I found the build to be very easy, but delightfully time consuming. There are a large number of small pieces to contend with, but the numbered bags deliver exactly what you need for each stage of the build (for the Mack Anthem anyway, probably not the rubbish truck), which is extremely helpful when ... MoreThe 2017 Technic releases didn't appeal to me, (thank goodness that there was plenty in the Creator series to fill the gap) so I was very pleased when this came out at the beginning of 2018. There are a large number of small pieces to contend with, but the numbered bags deliver exactly what you need for each stage of the build (for the Mack Anthem anyway, probably not the rubbish truck), which is extremely helpful when trying to find a small part. Others have complained of missing parts, but there were no missing parts and all the right colour - as is usually the case in my experience. This will make a great display model as the compactness of the build makes it look very realistic. I have built many Technic models and this one rates highly along with the mobile crane mark II, the crane truck, Volvo front loader and the tracked digger.Much as I still like the old style of engine, especially the V8s, the new engine design turns out to be a great success despite my initial scepticism and clearly the old style engine would not have fitted in the available space.I usually much prefer the model to be motorised, but I can understand the lack of motorisation as the torque required to turn the gears to raise and lower the load is obviously too much for even the biggest of the Technic motors, But I may still try and motorise the drive and steering with infra red control, although the compactness of the build may make hiding the motors difficult.I would highly recommend this model and it marks a great start for Technic for 2018.
This set has everything I wanted:- It's not yet another car.- Panels in colours I can re-use in my own models (nosilly shades of blue).- Dark Green Technic pieces.- Features that work properly (steering, engine and unloading are especially good, and original).- Techniques for experiences Technic builders to learn (original mechanisms).- Good value for the parts count, despite a company sponsorship link. This set has all the good things that 42070 lacked. The LEGO company now has another "best truck" example alongside 42043, to compare with 42070 and rate other sets. The unloading cranes showed how to get drive to the actuators. I had been wanting more sets that had real Technic features and a bit more realistic sculpture. The tractor unit has that, where the trailer has more of the playability.I would like to see more use of the thinner 30 x 14mm wheels 56904; these would need larger tyres to go with the ones in this set, but it would enable realistic double wheels to be put on the driving axles. In the future I would like to see a set where this type of truck was built at the scale of 42043. For an 8000 piece Technic set it might need a stronger box!I bought 2 of these and was tempted to buy more.Warmly recommended to a wide range of LEGO enthusiasts.
As the title implies, I bought this set solely for the front-loading garbage truck model. For being a 2-in-1 set, I was very impressed. A few corners were cut to keep the piece count reasonable. But as it stands, you will have a lot of pieces left over if you build the garbage truck model. Based on the stickers/instructions, it’s obvious the Mack Anthem is the star of the show, as the Mack LR (garbage truck) instructions a) are only available online, and b) instruct you to put a few stickers on that really aren’t applicable to a garbage truck.Word of advice to other future garbage truck builders: Do not bother trying to open the pieces in the order the bags are numbered. The numbers apply to the Anthem model only. Parts you need early on will be spread among all ... MoreAs the title implies, I bought this set solely for the front-loading garbage truck model. Save yourself time and headache and open all the bags from the get-go.I was impressed with how sturdy the truck is, even just the chassis. Other large Technic vehicles, like the Mercedes Arocs, seem to have a bit more flex to them. I was also impressed on how smooth the compactor/ejector operates, as well as the fact that it slides the whole length of the hopper. It would be nice if controls for the compactor/ejector would have been provided on both sides of the truck, as are provided for the lifting arms. I also would have liked different gearing for the lifting arms, as the linear actuators are quite slow to operate. I think pneumatics would have been better, but would have been much messier in design, with all the necessary hoses. The locking control for the lifting forks is nice, but unfortunately prevents the forks from being able to fold up all the way, like they would on a real truck. I did make a design that would allow the forks to fold more, but unfortunately, does not lock the forks into place (the locking is needed to keep the dumpster from flopping-over when the arms are emptying the dumpster into the truck). While I prefer the traditional Lego Technic piston engine, the 6-cylinder design for this set is an ingenious compromise, given the limited amount of space. An interesting piece was used for the engine fan. It feels kinda flimsy and looks a little odd, but is nearly completely hidden once the cab is fully-assembled. It would have been nice if the cab would have had operable doors, but there’s already a lot of moving functions, in addition to limited space.I was pleasantly surprised at the smaller details included on the truck:- Dual [non-functioning] steering wheels in the cab (not sure why they have two different logos in the center of the wheel)- Realistic bulldog "brick"- Spot lights on the sides of the truck- Lots of warning/taillights on the rear tailgate.- Highly detailed exhaust systemI do wish the garbage truck would have had a few more model-specific stickers, like some of the standard warning placards found on the rear of most real garbage trucks. The dumpster is a little disappointing, as it’s a miss-match of extra pieces. IMO, it looks better if you leave the stickers off.I did make one small improvement. For the hatch door on the roof, I used a few of the extra pieces to help close some of the gaps in the original design. I did also have to swap out a couple of the pieces from the dumpster (the guides that the lifting arm forks slide into) in order to make the colors match on the roof of the truck (see photos).Criticisms aside, it’s a great value for the money, and a great addition to any Technic truck collection.
