Lego 42083 Technic Bugatti Chiron

Entertaining Experiance

This project was fun and challenging to build. Hats off to the Lego design team. When building the gearbox make sure to leave a little spacing in the gears, placing them too tightly together may create excess friction in the gearbox and drivetrain later in the build. Building the back half and the front half of the chassis is a unique idea that works well. I found it took some patience and accuracy to align the various axels and drivetrains in order to put the two halves together. Once the two halves are together it is a good idea to put the rims and tires on the chassis to test out the gearbox, if you have made an error in assembling the gearbox or the drivetrain it is easier to correct the problem at this point. A known problem with the Chiron is a soft suspension that has been described as not fully returning to the start position when the car is pressed down. It appears to me that the cause of the problem is that the suspension geometry in the design does not allow the springs to be compressed (loaded) sufficiently as installed. Fortunately there are several solutions that are demonstrated on YouTube if one wants to check them out. I used the zip tie method to fix the problem with great success. Excellent model of an awesome car.

This is an amazingly detailed model, faithfully recreating numerous iconic aspects of both Bugatti design in general, and the Chiron in particular, including the horseshoe grille, the sweeping exterior curves, and the custom pattern wheels. The build itself is rather long and involved, taking me almost twelve hours over the course of two days, though much of that time is spent assembling the rather robustly designed frame and undercarriage and the intricately modeled seven speed dual-clutch transmission and monstrous 8 liter W16 engine. However, despite how complex the build is, the instructions are well designed and mostly pretty easy to follow barring a few places where it's easy to miss small pieces being added to much larger assemblies.The transmission in particular is extremely impressive, both the internal gearing and the shifting mechanism make inventive use of individual pieces to produce a remarkably complex and thoroughly robust system. It's honestly a bit of a shame in my opinion that there's no way to see most of it once the model is fully assembled.The design is rather sturdy (more so than I would normally expect for a LEGO model, though this is the first Technic model I've built that's on this scale), though some of the exterior modeling is a bit less robust than I would personally have liked if I hadn't bought this as anything other than a display model. The detailing relies heavily on carefully placed stickers in some places, which I'm not hugely fond of but can understand given that custom printed parts would have significantly raised the price of the model.Overall, this is a great model for the value, especially given the history of models like this becoming valuable collectibles once they're no longer being produced. I would highly recommend it for both fans of complex LEGO sets and fans of sports cars.

Great Model and a Feeling of Accomplishment

Having built the UCS Millennium Falcon some time ago, I was ready for another challenge and this model has become my favorite Lego build. While working on it I was inspired to learn about the real Bugatti Chiron and I was blown away by all I learned, from Buggati's history to how the vehicle is assembled and it's capabilities. The car is an engineering marvel. As I proceeded through the build, I could see the level of detail that the Lego designer put into this model. The bags are numbered which increased my enjoyment. However, after the "marriage" part at stage 6 I tested the wheels by spinning them by hand and noticed they would spin only a turn or two and then stop. However, after the "marriage" part at stage 6 I tested the wheels by spinning them by hand and noticed they would spin only a turn or two and then stop. I disassembled most of what I completed and located that my mistake was in the gearbox with the orange pieces that engage the various gears. I didn't have those orange pieces sitting correctly so there they would be able to engage the gears. Based on some similar problems I've seen builders have on YouTube who unfortunately discovered a problem with the wheels not turning after the model was completely finished; I recommend testing the wheels to make sure they spin after the marriage where you join the front and rear halves of the model. The wing was also a bit of a challenge for some reason, but it ultimately came together perfectly. My second suggestion for builders is to take their time and enjoy the process. I've seen several videos where people try to rush assembly and ultimately make a mistake. Even with my mistake this was a great experience and I enjoyed putting the model together and learning about the real Chiron. The model looks great and the more you learn about the real Chiron, the more you will appreciate what went into designing this piece. I enjoyed the Chiron so much, that I ordered the technic Porsche which I had to get from a third party because it is a retired product. From what I see, the Bugatti blows the Porsche away, but I got addicted to the engineering that goes into these models.

Well, one thing that I was no expecting was the absolute size of the thing! It was huge when I was done. The bodywork is very well done considering the limited range of the technic panels, especially on the sides of the car. One complaint is that there are many quite noticeable gaps, however I understand that without creating new panels and pieces, it would be impossible to fill them in. I think my favourite part of the model is definitely the back. It recreates the actual car incredibly well, and also has some very nice functions such as the spoiler and the moving pistons in the fake engine. Overall, I think the functions are great, however I have had a problem with the suspension sagging when you push it down instead of sprinting up. However, everything else works flawlessly and I would definitely recommend this set to anyone who has the space for it!

Mixed bag

The COVID lockdown and disposable income has spurred me to get back into Lego because I always enjoyed the technical aspects of Technic builds when I was younger. I purchased the Chiron kit because I was really excited by the details of the transmission in particular. I found that part of the build to be really enjoyable.I have a few critiques of the build as a whole in its final configuration:1) The model as a whole is pretty flimsy. Picking it up feels like some parts are liable to fall off at the slightest touch- this is particularly the case in a couple of corner bricks under the spoiler.2) The excellent functionality of the transmission is marred by the wobbly wheels and brake calipers. If you try to move this on the floor to see the engine/transmission in action, I find the calipers rub and get stuck on the wheels and fall off, and can be quite challenging to re-attach. This occurs both because of the weak attachment of the calipers and because of the wobbly wheel mounts.3) The wobbling of the rear wheels on my model pulls laterally on the axles slightly, which can pull them out of one of the small gears in the rear differential and allow it to fall out. Replacing it requires inverting the model, which then causes other bits to fall off. Luckily, this differential is accessible (by design?). If one of these gears fell out of the forward differential, fixing would require a near-complete dissasembly.4) The above problem is worsened by the weakness of the springs in the suspension, which has been noted in many reviews. The weight of the model means that these springs are constantly compressed beyond their limits, and so the model sags a bit. In this position, the axles (again particularly in the rear drivetrain) are more liable to be pulled out of the differential, dropping the gear out.Overall, I am very tempted to disassemble the body of the model and leave it mainly as a frame with the engine and transmission exposed. The mechanical guts of the model are by far its most interesting part, whereas the bodywork is much less detailed, more flimsy, and adds considerable weight.It's a fun, challenging build, but I think the post-build enjoyment of future such models would be improved by addressing some of these issues.

Much more rewarding than I'd expected!

I've built a number of the vehicle Lego Technic sets over the years, and had been aware of this set for some time, (a couple of YouTubers plugging it helped) but funds did not allow so I'd been keeping my eyes open for a good deal and (against my better judgement) found a brand new unopened set for a 1/3 under list price from a private eBay seller. This is nothing against the set, I'm just not a Bugatti fan.I made the decision to polish certain pieces that were of a matt finish compared to adjacent pieces and am pretty sure that that effort enhances the end result well. I very much appreciate the way the build was broken down into boxes and numbered bags, and found the instructions to be pretty good, some things could have been a bit clearer, but I did some of this late at night so lighting and tiredness could account for some of my confusion. I was a little confused as to how the rear wing would be operated until very near the end of the build, the handy tool for adjusting it you get to build also doubles up as a sign for the piece whilst on display, and can also be stowed in the 'frunk' if you see fit.Overall this is a very rewarding build, and worth every penny, if I'd have paid full price I'd still be very happy with the end result, it is definitely the pride of my collection. This is probably the most challenging and rewarding set I've experienced to date.

The transmission is the most complex part of the vehicle, is no small feat for Lego to design such intricate structure within the space available, enjoy the interactions of the gears while you can, becasue once the body panels are on you will never see those gears again, and this is one of the down sides of the recent 'ultra' realstic Technic sets.Features:Cars always have a special spot in Technic history, the Car Chassis, Test Car and the legendary 8880 Super car were all technological marvels at the time, each one packing more features than the last, however the reccent 1:8 IP/OEM car line seems to be going on a different direction than before when it comes features and functions.For a flagship Technic set such as the Chiron,one would expect a lot of functionalities from all those (3600-1) bricks, but the result seems a bit lacking when you compare to super cars of the past.The car comes with 4WD, working steering, pedal shifters with 8 gears, and last but not least the adjustable rear spoiler. Impressive as those features are, nothing is trully revolutionary, you would think for a super car such as Chiron there would be at least some kind of power function/lighting effects support, not only there is none it doesn't even have a door latch, is a huge step backwards as set as old as the 8448 Super Street Sensation (1999) even had spring driven doors!Overall Impression:With everything been said, the Technic Chiron sure looks great upon completion, however aside from sitting on a shelf or inside a display case, its complex gear box and mechanisms won't have much chance to demonstrate their interactions under 'play' condition, as most of the gears are covered under the intricate body panels, unless you are using a power function motor and the speed computer, you won't be able to tell which gear you are in, and whether the car is in Drive or Reverse(it doesn't even inlude sticker for the drive mode lever!).When a Technic set lets you build a completely usless mini handbag with the OEM logo and a fake 'Top speed key' to open the rear spoilers, you know this is no play set, but rather an expensive 'luxry' decoration for your room. The included Technic functionalities are more likely just used to justifiy the hefty price tag, rather than add play/education value, this set is way too big and heavy to be played, even if you do you will get no satisfaction by just rolling the wheels and see almost nothing moving inside.I appraise the Chiron's design and the efforts that the design team put in, however I do not like the direction Lego is taking with the flagship Technic Super Car series. Is becoming more like an IP/OEM showcase rather than technological testbed, looks are everything and functionalities comes second, you are paying more for the brand than actual play experience.If you ever had the chance to build the classic Super Car sets like the 8865, 8880, or the 8448, you would understand where my frustration is coming from. I know Lego's goal now is to make profit, but it shouldn't make its flaghsip sets as luxry goods, is just a betrayal to the Lego name, you should be able to play well without a heavy cost.

The most luxurious set I have ever seen

After having assembled the T1 Transporter a few weeks ago, I wanted to make something a bit more complicated, and ended up coughing up the cash for the Chiron. It is extremely expensive (around 420 USD where I live, with added taxes), but it is a joy to build. The packaging and the entire unboxing experience mirrors that of a luxury car with the boxes organized in a mosaic and the amazing booklets.Overall, building it took about 30 hours, 25 if I don't count having to disassemble the rear end once, and the gearbox twice because I thought I had made a mistake. The bumper does not touch the ground, and I'm sure I will be able to fix it the next time I'm building it.Small issues aside, the completed car is huge and extremely good-looking. The construction is also quite stable, and not very prone to falling apart, except maybe some smaller details.Another thing I absolutely LOVED was the dedicated podcast series on the LEGO website. I listened to all 9 parts a good 3 or 4 times while building the model, and it is a perfect companion piece to the Chiron. I do not regret a single penny I spend on this beauty.

Wanted to love it

I’ll start this review by saying the the presentation of this set is nothing short of phenomenal. Everything from the way the boxes form art to the drawings of Bugatti’s heritage on the inside of the top half of the box is absolutely gorgeous. This set is 100% magnificent to look at.As for the build, I was looking forward to building this set with my days off of work but I was halted due to a missing piece in only the second box (of six). Hard to believe that with a set this expensive, I’m still not receiving all of my parts in their respective bags. Missing pieces are always a major disappointment for me because I’m not one of those people who have a big bin of Lego pieces they can go dig through when something is missing.
