This 'ultimate collectors set' (Used as Marvel doesn't really have a name for these large scale sets like star wars does) came as something of a suprise to me when it was first announced- the ultron movie had been and gone, and it wasn't like there was a sudden resurgence in interest in the movie. I purchased The Hulkbuster for myself and if there was one way I could describe this, I would say smaller than expected. Granted, such a price point hardly allowed you to create a monster mech, but the scale still seemed off. The model itself looks lovely, and I absolutely love all the extra gizmos included- the car, V.E.R.O.N.I.C.A satellite and the minfig. Speaking of the minifig, it is outstanding- my favourite Iron man minfig so far, though it feels rather lonely for a ... I was looking for this set since the fan submitted Lego Ideas kit was not approved by Lego. We all knew they had something in the plans and this is it.Let me first start by saying this is a very enjoyable build. The platform, extras, and interchangeable arm are a brilliant idea, adding context and detail. The Hulkbuster armor itself has enough bulk and detail to make any fan happy. I wish the knees would bend, but I guess the designers opted for stability and more detail instead of actual knees. Can't really blame them.Up to that point I was back to being a little boy, excitedly building the figure. But I cannot express enough disappointment at the choice of LED light to represent the ARC reactor. Instead of the bright bluish white, as it was in the movies and on the Lego box kit, Lego opted for a (very much cheaper) yellowish/orange LED and has you place a blue translucent block in front of it. My guess to try and mask the color. It does not work. It is an horrible choice and would ruin the set if it wasn't such a cool build. For that reason I am knocking one star out of what should be a perfect 5 star kit imo.If you don't mind such details, by all means go for it. It is and looks pretty awesome. But I can't help but wish that Lego would re-issue the LED light to every owner. It is that bad. Realistically, I will be looking for a replacement and will refrain from pre-ordering sets like this until they are reviewed.

Got this 1st day right when the Lego store opened. It looked so cool on display in the store window. I was very excited to get home and start building. The build is pretty easy to follow in the instruction book. There are plenty of small parts that "clip" on to each other, which I am not too fond of because those pieces with clip type connections have a tendency to break with repeated use.Once completed, the model looked as good as it did at the store. My biggest gripes:The connections at the ankles do not provide enough resistance. As a result, the model leans forward when either or both arms are raised forward. You really have to play around with the leg positioning in order to prevent it from leaning forward. The arm articulation is good, but it is really ... You really have to play around with the leg positioning in order to prevent it from leaning forward. The arm articulation is good, but it is really lacking in leg poseability. The knees DO NOT BEND! Legs can only move outward and inward. No forward or backward movement! As a display piece, this set does look very nice. The info plaque is a good addition and really completes the look of a UCS set.Overall, the set is just average. If the designer would have just fixed the above mentioned problems, this would have been a Great Set.
Major Maniac here, reviewing the Ultimate Hulkbuster Armor. I am a fan and collector of the Marvel Sets, City Trains, and Modulars. As a collector, this is the perfect set to build and display. It has a lot of detail, and the MK43 is a really nice touch to go with it. That being said, there were definite missteps. First, the "Arch Reactor" is a simple yellow light brick that the designers put in the set. It looks really out of place when you activate it. Its cool to have a working light, but not as cool since its not the right color. That's like giving Darth Vader a purple light saber; it just doesn't work.Second, even though the hulkbuster is posable, the knees don't bend and the arms don't twist so you can't create the wide variety of poses that you can make ... This is disappointing considering the level of detail and size. You'd think the designers would have been able to do something about that.Third, the playability is really lacking because despite the size of this set, its not that sturdy. Being a collector, its not a big deal, but considering this is still a toy meant for kids, I feel it would fall apart fairly easily. What good is a toy if it falls apart, even if it is LEGO.Overall, this is a detailed build, but it feels delicate and has some flaws.
I picked this one up on Saturday, and finished the build today. I have seen most of the comments on this set re the pro's and con's. So this is my two cents worth...Overall I like it, it's a good looking set when finished, with a couple of reservations. I found the build very easy and quite satisfying. They seem to have got the red and gold colour scheme spot-on.The articulation on the piece is not too bad. Plenty of movement on the arms, but it would have been better if the legs could move forward and backward, which would have given it more stability and poseability. With a little trial and error its not too difficult to get it into a stable position, but I may use some blu tac underneath it just in case. The Iron Man figure fits nicely inside the head (I had ... I believe that the round white pieces are supposed to be luminous, but so far I have not been able to test this out. But I think it would also have been a nice touch to have added a light brick to one of the arms, to simulate the blaster effect.Yes, the two blue pins on the upper body are a little off-putting, but they are very small and it would'nt be too much of a problem to replace them, or even mask them off inn some way.Overall the good outweighs the bad for me. There is a lot of nice, chunky detail to the set, and it looks great when finished and displayed.
This is my first review of a Lego set, having been a collector for several years and built literally hundreds of sets for myself and my kids I have to say that this set was a HUGE disappointment on a Hulk scale!Starting with the build, it's what I would class as a relatively simple set. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I've never been a fan of bag numbering, it takes away the puzzle element and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of a build. This set took me less than 3 hours to build which would have been a lot longer with a table full of bricks! The exclusive MK45 doesn't seem much different from other Iron Man suits, its not a buying point of the set!The additional switch out arm is a cool feature....but I'm never likely to use it! The other 'accessories' are a tad pointless and don't add anything t the set.Once built the the model looks good, but its far from great. There have been several reports of the balance not being right......its not! The figure DOES lean forward despite what you try to do to make it stand tall! The manoeuvrability is poor! You certainly can't pose it as is shown on the (exclusive) print...would you want to? Its a classic Iron Man pose...so YES!The final flaw in my set was the good old missing piece! Not a vital piece thankfully but never the less it was missing! In summary its an OK set, the height of the figure is impressive, and just in case you're wondering...Iron Man can sit in the Hulk Buster.I didn't want this to be a negative review but don't be fooled, its far from an amazing set. If you have a few hours to while away then snap it up....If I'm honest I'd probably wait for something else to come along that will challenge you and be worth your time, money and effort!Sorry Lego....deffo not a recommendation from me this time!
I'm pretty disappointed in the design of this set. There are some interesting details and it looks okay, but the proportions are a little off.The first minifigure scale Hulkbuster set Lego released looks far more interesting and has posability and some functionality that is just awesome. This one looks kind of flat and boring and seems to lack "bulk".The worst part about this design, however, is the complete lack of posability in the legs aside from being able to bend the "hip" joints outward in a "splits" position. The ball joints in the ankles are far too weak to hold the Hulkbuster up very well so the entire thing either leans far forward or backward making the thing look very odd, like it's about to tip over in either direction. There is no real in between and it looks awful. I think giving the set bendable knees might have helped this a little bit.I will say, however, that the feet are wide enough and have enough grip to make this set pretty darned sturdy. Despite it looking like it's about to topple over any minute, the thing will NOT lose its balance, even with a good push or a shake of the table it's standing on. Believe me, I tested it very well.Overall I would recommend saving your money and going with the far superior (and far more affordable) minifigure scale Hulkbuster sets. Sorry Lego, but this one is a dud!
My opinion of this set is surprisingly double sided. Mostly, I'm a little underwhelmed. This is a big set, both literally, being around 30cm tall, and figuratively, being a special set marking the MCU's 10th anniversary. To be honest, I feel like they could've done something better with the 10 year anniversary thing. I would've liked to have seen sets from the first phase of the MCU, The first two Iron Man films, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The first Avenger. If it had to be a UCS set, why not something more interesting like a Malibu Mansion set, with a proper hall of armour, lab, upper room section etc. The fact they've already released two other Hulkbusters, one literally on the same day this one came out, just makes this feel a little like ... I managed to come up with a couple of ways to fix the blue technic pins that everyone's been complaining about. I like the light brick, but wish it was blue or white, instead of orange. I'm also disappointed with the MK43 Iron Msn minifigure, which is almost identical to the one from the Age of Ultron line, except with a few added details. They could have had Tony Stark, maybe Bruce Banner too, or someone more interesting. Also the legs don't move forwards on this thing, so that's lame.I do like the way they put facing-down wheels on the bottom of the feet and stand though, for extra friction and stability, that's clever. The jackhammer punch arm is also well built and implemented, and I found the fire extinguisher a funny nod to the other sets in the Marvel line which regularly seem to include a fire extinguisher. The display base is epic, and looks really cool on the shelf, even in the dark with the glowing repulsors and light pieces.TL:DR: This set was made mostly for display. It looks great, but that's about it. I'm pretty proud to have it on display, but I wish it had more features and playability.
Got this on 1st day release and couldn't wait to get it built up.. from the first day I saw pictures of it that had been leaked on Instagram I knew that I had to have it.. and wow does it impress! I was expecting it to be good but it's even better in person, it's a set that surprises you with its size because you see on the box that it's overall height is 26cm and you naturally think 'Thats not very tall' but when it's built and in front of you it's surprisingly bigger than what you first thought. The build took me 5 hours and was one of the more pleasent builds I've done.. there's a little repitition involved but nothing major enough to put you off. The build took me 5 hours and was one of the more pleasent builds I've done.. there's a little repitition involved but nothing major enough to put you off. Some nice techniques are used and there's some really nice pieces in new colours that surprised me and that new dome element for the head has the most amazing printing. There's a few stickers involved in the set and they are the clear backing type so to avoid leaving finger prints on the adhesive side I used a pair of tweezers to apply them.. they are relatively easy to apply anyway.. the usual Large UCS Plaque sticker took a couple of lining up attempts to get just right with no Air bubbles but that is the norm for that particular sticker (no UCS Plaque sticker has beaten me yet so I'm still winning with that one) there's some nice glow in the dark elements in the build and they are really an improvement of previous glow in the dark pieces. The stand is a nice addition to pose and display the final model and comes complete with 2 robotic arms that look really impressive, aswel as they can be positioned in any pose, there is also an exclusive minifigure in the form of Ironman kitted up in the MK43 suit which has never appeared in a Lego set before, this also sets on its own 1x2 micro display with a small sticker applied. Also thrown in on the accessories side is a micro hot rod model, a fire extinguisher, and the Veronica Satellite. There is also a work display table that has 2 clear computer screens mounted on top, one has the image of the Veronica Satellite and the other has an image of the MK44 domed head of the Hulkbuster. Another note to mention is the robotic arms and table can be moved and repositioned from either the left or the right side of the display platform.. there is 8 technic axles that can accommodate them (4 on the left of the base and 4 on the right) the creme dear la crème of the base is the flip up UCS Plaque.. it can either be laid flat or flipped upright with all the details on display for all to see.. I love that little touch and really applaud the work of the designers for using a simple yet brilliant idea makes its way into an official set. When the build all finally comes together and you but the Finished Hulkbuster on its display stand it looks truly awesome! It really really does.. all you have to do then is find a suitable and good pose for it, I admit I would love to have seen this with knee articulation but I have a feeling it can be added with a little tweaking here and there, and I'm sure the MOCCERS out there are going to be adding knee joints as we speak and posting their results online. What you will realise whilst building the set is how much detail there is in the thing.. there is tonnes of detail! Even the soles of the feet have the rocket thrusters in! It's a detail that hardly anybody will ever see but it's there and its good that the design team wanted to put it in to make it feel complete, also the light brick in the chest to represent the power core... it didn't have to be in there but it is and it looks and works perfectly, also all the small gold elements and the little Greebling techniques really add to make this one of the most beautiful and impressive sets out there now and that there has ever been. As for playability I really do think it's limited in many regards, mainly down to these small pieces getting knocked off, I personally think it's a display set, It looks absolutely brilliant on display and is a truly phenomenal representation of the MK44.. I honestly can't recommend this enough. Get one now before it gets put into the infamous 'back order' status
