Being 8 years old the Beetle, 10252 cannot compare to the latest Icon cars which are built in similar scale. It lacks in details, authenticity and functions - it does not feature front wheel steering for example. After about 5 minutes of trying to explain to my partner how cool this is she said "why don't you get it, you love helping the kids with theirs". "Don't be silly I'm 34 I can't buy Lego for myself" "why not?" she replied, it of seemed like forever but over in second as the adult part of my brain and the child side were in a fight to the death. Then the excitement really started to build as I instinctively grabbed the box marched to the till and stood there patently waiting to be served, leg tapping and a little impatient bobbing up and down like I really need to go to the toilet. Proudly in my VW jacket.I gave the young lady the set with a beaming smile, I'm sure she could sense my excitement "would you like a bag sir?" (she could of said young man and i wouldnt of noticed) "No thank you" (the adult part of my brain and to step in after losing the last round, after all the contents are all ready in there own form of a carrier!).So after finally buying a Lego set for myself after 20 years of being a grown up, I started with this set.I was walking around the shopping centre like a child carrying my big box of Lego, making sure people didnt get too close, eagled eyed for that potential theif.I couldn't wait to get home. The drive seemed to take forever every Sunday driver, every slow pony pulling out in front of you or not pulling out in the case of junctions.1 hour 10 minutes later we arrived home. All the normal rules and procedures which I normally sound like a Sergeant Major "shoes off, put them away!" "Coats off, hang them up" all forgotten (the kids where in shock, but this gave me the advantage of the prime space on the dining room table).I opened the box (coat still on) to find Lego has changed and for the better. I used to open a box and have one big bag of bricks, studs and any special pieces fall everywhere and invariably loose some under the fridge! However now neatly numbered bags nice one I thought, but the greatest surprise is the handy tool for fixing any errors, about time I thought I've swallowed a couple one bricks and studs in my time, perfect I thought. So I started to build.I won't go in to the details of how I did it, after all you only follow the instructions, but five hours later I stepped back and admired my genius, I am a Lego builder again. What a great set to start with and now as I write this review (my first as you can probably tell!) I'm looking at my next conquest the VW T1 Camper Van.I'm hooked... :)

This review isn't for this particular set, but I can't leave reviews for the classic Lego Beetle set from 2008 as the page for it doesn't seem to exist any more. I'll leave a separate review for this page's Beetle when it arrives and I build it.The 2008 Beetle was a fun build, though it was meant more for display than play (I was eight when I got it and my father helped me build it). I loved the detail in the whole set and how it translated to LEGO bricks. I particularly enjoyed the engine and swapping the wheels with the spare tire. Looking forward to seeing how the newer Beetle set compares!

A wonderful encapsulation of the 1960's zeitgeist

Now that I've got your attention, let's dive in!Pros: The beetle is characterized by curved lines, antagonistic to angular LEGO bricks; that is why this feat of design is so impressive. Obviously LEGO has been fastidious when it comes to these Creator car sets, and the Beetle is no exception. The little touches (such as the surfboard and the cooler) coalesce with the car itself to give this bug some sort of tactile character, which makes the critter all the more evocative sitting on my shelf. The build experience was also illuminating- hats off to the designer. It highlighted to me how vast the possibilities of LEGO really are; the building techniques here are ingenious, but you'd likely be hard-pressed to implement them in other creations-LEGO building demands ingenuity to cater for every creation, ascending the humble toddler digging in his box of bricks to the virtuoso who designed this set.Cons: Obviously this is subjective, but I don't really have any major complaints. The price to part ratio of this set is excellent, especially in comparison to some of the exorbitant prices of the Star Wars sets. One word of warning I might issue is that this isn't really a play set. Sure, it looks great and the wheels roll, but a child would likely be underwhelmed by the play value. Nonetheless, this is wholly justifiable as this set was designed with a slightly older audience in mind. If you're vacillating whether or not to buy this for a child, I would recommend the Speed Champions line, if they like cars. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope it helped.

Best set I've ever built

I'm really happy with this purchase. The designer(s) really did well on this, seriously well done.First off, the set really holds together well which is something that's very important to me. I like to lift my sets up and not worry about it collapsing in my hands and this set does in fact hold together really well.I'm also really glad they printed a few pieces like the VW logo stud and the speedometer.Something I also really appreciated from this set was all the complex connections and ways of getting the curves. Such as putting the door hinges on a 0.5 tile to give the door a very very slight curve. The curves all around though are also very spectacular and the way they went about achieving some of them are just amazing to look at.I can't get over some of ... MoreI'm really happy with this purchase. There's a part in the back that initially slides in kind-of weird, but once you get to putting on the rear window in, it locks the weird bit into place so it will never fall out without first removing the window. One small complaint I have is they use a grey piece in the gas tank that should clearly be black because it's visible. It's a common piece so I just swapped it out myself but I really think they should of gone the extra step to include 1 of these pieces in black for that part of the set.All in all I think this set is miles better then the old VW and this is the best designed set I've ever owned in almost 20 years of collecting. If you do get this set, consider using your extra VW logo tile on the steering wheel ;)

I’m late to party with this one but I still enjoyed building it including the tricky parts. I am always amazed at how intricate the builds are! The hidden but very important bits of the whole structure. Bits have fallen off when people have tried to handle it but easy enough to reattach. i also have a mini version and they both sit nicely together with some of my other builds.

What fun building this, the most elaborate of the six LEGO sets I have built since discovering these engineering masterpieces just a couple of months ago.Very solid structure throughout the vehicle, and the assembly process became more enjoyable as the features came together. All the while, memories of our family's 1964 move from Michigan to Florida in one of these, our baby brother riding in the very back cubbyhole (where the beach towel is stored in the model). Here is a build tip: When applying the Azure Blue window stickers, the back window stickers number 17 should be placed such the edge of the color aligns with the outside and top edges of the window. The (front) side window stickers numbers 1 and 2 should be aligned such that the edge of the color aligns with the top edge of the window. Tweezers really help this process. The instruction step illustrations (especially for stickers 3 and 4) show the color edges slightly back from the window edges, which is how I applied them, but I think the stickers would provide a slightly better blended look with the "body" of the vehicle as it seems to appear in the pictures on the front of the instruction book and on the box.The enjoyment of LEGO for me is in the building (slowly so as to savor the experience) and displaying of these wonderful sets. Do I play with them? Well, it is fun to inspect the spare tire, ensure that the gas cap is tight, check the engine's belt, adjust the mirrors, tilt the seats forward to check for spare change, see what's in the cooler, and ensure that the alignment is in order by rolling the vehicle forward and backward. Do those things count as playing?

I love it! Great to see the lights actually working and showing off the VW Beetle.A bit finicky work and often I had to check the original assembly, but I got it right. The light kit is a lovely feature to my Lego.(The batterijen drain quickly. Have to try another powersource.)

Again, great kit. Very sturdy and neat packaging. This one too was easy to install and it looks really cool. Maybe a tad too 'cool'..Considering the age of the original vehicle and the LEGO model being blue I strongly feel that the interior light and headlights should be 'warm white' rather than 'very white white' but it's not enough of a deal to lower the stars rating. Maybe one day i'll replace them though..

A super addition for this LEGO model. This kit is very easy to fit and is very discreet after completion. The online instructions are very clear with good quality photos of exactly what to do and can be downloaded to your device for offline use.I recommend this kit without hesitation.
