As a younger LEGO fan, I don't have quite the same nostalgia for the classic Pirates line as many older builders, but the throwback design of the packaging is still just right. I don't think I've ever seen another LEGO box quite like it - and the box is the least exciting part of the set! Throughout the entire process of building the set, I was constantly impressed by the little details incorporated throughout the build. It doesn't ever feel repetitive, and it was fun to see the clever techniques the designers used to achieve some of the set's charming angles. The set comes with an impressive amount of pirate weapons, and 8 excellent minifigures to wield them. All of the minifigures are visually distinct and very fun. Tatooga is my favorite, other than the Captain himself - Redbeard, in all of his classic pirate glory, but with a modern redesign! Of course, what really matters in the end is whether the final product delivers, and boy does it deliver. The finished model is absolutely gorgeous. Pictures really cannot do it justice. The colors are striking, the height is imposing, and the details are just way too much fun. I'm especially pleased with the wooden platforms around the ship, they really sell the pirate town feel. Personally, I can't bring myself to construct the ship, as the island configuration is so compelling - there's so many nooks and crannies, and it just really feels like a pirate base. This set is easily my favorite among all the sets I own, and I anticipate that it will hold that title for the foreseeable future. I hope that LEGO lets the aesthetic of this set inform the design of future Pirate sets; I would love to see the color palette, palm tree design, and wooden docks return in the future.

Christmas 1989 (or perhaps 1990) at my grandparents house, and my poor parents must have had to cram the original Black Seas Barracuda and its massive box into the car on the long journey. I remember waking at 6am, and ripping it out of the box (no awareness of prospective 2020s resale value back then!).I resisted this tribute set for so long, and even avoided looking at the pictures too closely, or watching reviews on the internet, lest I be tempted. But slowly and surely this set was burning a place in my heart regardless, and I caved in on my 38th Birthday.I'm glad I avoided looking at the publicity, as building the set and learning the history behind it was a real delight of surprises and discovery, with lots of hidden easter eggs and references back to the ... MoreChristmas 1989 (or perhaps 1990) at my grandparents house, and my poor parents must have had to cram the original Black Seas Barracuda and its massive box into the car on the long journey. More a cathartic trip down memory lane, one brick at a time. There are lots of lovely and clever techniques, particularly the anchor system and shaping of the stern section. Like so many on here, I expected to jump straight to the finished ship as soon as possible, but I was so impressed with the island that I quickly returned to that form, and even bought a 3rd party lighting kit to make the most of it on display! The only negatives are that the ship is difficult to play with and requires some determined modification to get the cannons into the lower deck. It would also be good to have easier access to the captains cabin like the original Barracuda - removing the rear panel usually ends up with pieces falling off. But overall the brilliant elements of this set make up for these minor shortcomings, and I cannot recommend it enough for fans of the original lego pirates.

So, after recently kinda getting back into lego after 20+ years, I started off small and worked my way up to the bigger sets. Unfortunately, when I got to this, it had already retired. Ended up getting the treehouse, which I thought would quench my desire for this set, but it wasn't enough. Thought about getting the 3 in 1 pirate ship, but it wasn't good enough. (Got both eventually) Ended up getting it in the aftermarket for a very reasonable price. I opted to leave it in island form as I think it tells more of a story than just a ship. After sliding the 2 halves together, I must have stared at the build for about 25 minutes, lol. Then about an hour later, I removed the rolled up sails and opted to get a custom aftermarket tattered set off eBay, stenciled from the Silent Mary sails. Didn't think the rolled up sails suited a ship wreck. The tattered sails however, look so amazing! I even ordered more skeletons, branches, leaves and what not off bricklink to customize the build a bit more.I was sad to see that it retired so quickly. I don't think I ever wanted a toy this badly, even as young boy, lol. I couldn't stop thinking about it and I had to get it... It's an amazing set.Really wish there'd be more pirate sets. Can't wait for the 90th anniversary castle set and hoping the Viking set wins the target collaboration.

TLDR: This set is amazing! The build experience was enjoyable and memorable throughout. The background put into the model and the explanation from the creator made each new addition to the model that much sweeter. The ability to make two models from one Ideas set is one I hope is repeated throughout. (Fender colour change is cool, but it's the same model).Long Review:When this set came out, the advertisement had me hooked right from the get go. The Father and daughter combo showing the old Black Seas Barracuda going through the years to the present day when Pirates of Barracuda Bay showed up was such a great trip. And that was even before I got the set.As soon as it arrived, I wasted no time reading the intricate stories of each Pirate featured, the reasoning ... MoreTLDR: This set is amazing! The Father and daughter combo showing the old Black Seas Barracuda going through the years to the present day when Pirates of Barracuda Bay showed up was such a great trip. And that was even before I got the set.As soon as it arrived, I wasted no time reading the intricate stories of each Pirate featured, the reasoning behind their long absence, and the numerous little details of how they made due on their sandbar reef.Every step, every bag, and every piece fitting on to the model was such a joy. The memories of building Pirate Lego with my dad in the early 90s came flooding back, and it was such a great thing to have during the difficulties of the Pandemic. The small extra details included in each room made every step of the build enjoyable. From the small creatures, the makeshift dock, the kitchen, the Inn, the treasure chest.I'm sorry to see this set go out of production so soon, and wish I had taken the leap to buy a second one so that I could display both models at once. The collaboration that was required to make this set the hit that it was for me is a big reason I continuously and will always collect Lego. Great work to the creator, and to the design team for bringing this to reality. Thank you for such a great memory! Keep up the amazing work!
My daughter was given a Fiends set for her 4th birthday and we put it together. This reignited my Lego passion and I began purchasing some sets for both her and myself. (I also retrieved my old Lego's from my mom's house, HAHA!)I saw this set on Lego's website, but it had just been retired. I had to have it so I found someone selling it in a new but real banged-up box online and pulled the trigger. I payed about $290 for the set but it was so worth it.It took me about 4 or 5 evenings working on it and it was a joy start to finish. The figures and all the details are just incredible. For $200 that Lego charged, it is a steal! Even at the amount I paid, I still think it is worth it.I love the shipwreck so much that I don't have the heart to turn it into a pirate ship. Maybe one of these days I can get another and create the ship. There is so much going on in this set that it makes for great playability. This is Lego at its finest!
This is easily my all time favorite set for several reasons! The first is nostalgia - Pirates was my favorite Lego theme when I was a kid and I always wanted a pirate ship, but it was too expensive for me to purchase myself. My favorite set of the Pirates theme was the Shipwreck Hideout, and this set is largely both the ship and the hideout! the whole reason why I got this set was that it provided both. The other reasons why I love this set are that it was very easily built, displays awesomely, and is easily my favorite Lego set ever sold. Huge thank you to the Lego group for making great products!!
I must admit, when I first saw this set I was extremely disappointed. It looked nothing like the amazing pirate island that I had been waiting for since it’s approval on LEGO Ideas! However, as I explored the set more, I found it could turn into a pirate ship?! I couldn’t believe it! Of course it is missing Bricky_Brick’s amazing secret passages, and imperial soldiers, but other than that this set is beautiful and is definitely my all time favorite! The ship is amazingly detailed and I love functionality of the capstan and the round shape of the vessel. I also enjoyed seeing the similarity of the new minifigs and the original Pirates! My dad had the original Barracuda and I grew up playing with his old pieces, and the designers did a great job recreating them! I don't usually write reviews but I had so much fun building this set I just felt the need to talk about it.Pirates of Barracuda Bay is one of the best, most satisfying sets I've had. When I was a kid, I always coveted the classic lego Pirate ships, but they were a little too pricey for my parents. Every part of the build is fun and interesting. Every time I got to a part that I thought would be generic or routine, there was some interesting detail, or unexpected building technique that surprised me.I'm actually curious about how kids would react to this set; it is fairly complicated to build and took me a few hours spread out over three days, but now that I'm done it feels pretty solid, even compared to some sets that are more directly aimed at kids. You can definitely move the ship around and put figures on it without feeling like pieces are going to fall off, and there are so many details and nooks and crannies that there's a lot there that would certainly have sparked my imagination as a kid.My only nitpick is that a couple of the interior spaces are a little bit hard to get at or display, which is a bit of a shame because they're all delightfully detailed, although for people with smaller hands that might be less of a problem.I do feel like there are enough pieces in the set that you could probably also modify the ship to be a bit more kid friendly, of you had the patience to experiment. It's really hard to overstate how much you get with this set.One thing that's kind of interesting is that the original Black Seas Barracuda retailed for about $110, and adjusted for inflation that comes out to about $200, and Pirates of Barracuda Bay includes about three times as many pieces as the original that inspired it.So, it's pricey, but I definitely feel like I got my money's worth, and if anything for how much love and detail went into designing the set it's actually a pretty good price.I highly recommend it of it's the kind of thing that interests you, you won't be disappointed.
I've always loved pirates. I loved Pirates of the Carribbean as a kid. I wasn't around for the original Pirates sets from the 80's and 90's, but always looked at them in awe. I finally got the chance to experience the Pirates theme with this set. It's one of my favorite sets of all time. The number of details and intricacy and care put into the build is incredible. The fact that it transforms from an island to a ship just adds to the value. The minifigs are excellent, I love Redbeard's hook hand. Parrots, pigs, crabs, etc- so many animals. I love the coral under the ship as well, and all the hidden details and Easter eggs that you will have to discover if you build this for yourself. I'm so glad I decided to get this over the Stranger Things set. Looks wonderful in ... MoreI've always loved pirates. I loved Pirates of the Carribbean as a kid. The set also looks huge for 200$, especially when compared to other sets such as the Cantina while in the island form.My only gripe with the set is it's hard to access some of the interior and some parts fall off quite easily, particularly the palm trees which will break apart from the slightest touch. This is more of a display model so I can forgive it in that regard. Overall 9.6/10

Oh, those feathered plumes & sparkly jewels! The tiny letters & maps, which I couldn't understand as such, when building. The flowers, the ocean, the kitchen with tiny fruits & pots.Today I keep this set, as island-version, on my desk. Still mix coconut extract into coffee. And rearrange/play with it regularly.I remember how its joy & ideas healed a terrified part of my soul. When I needed to escape into a more beautiful & silly world for awhile.I'll be eternally grateful. Even not wearing my eye patch anymore, I remain a Lego pirate @ heart. Forever.
