This was my first modular building so I decided to buy the oldest one still being sold by Lego (before it became really expensive on e-bay) even though it looked the least interesting of he ones still being sold. After building it though, it's anything but bland!I was recommended to not look to much into what's in the modular building sets so I could be surprised when building them and that was great advice. I expected a good looking, but average-ish start to a nice collection but ended up with a new favorite set. About every 5-10 steps I would build something new and amazing I didn't see before and had a blast putting this together! The Pet Shop sign is even the most interesting and surprising thing I've build in a Lego set to date. Although the floors easily separate so I can show it to friends/family as the modular buildings will become the centerpiece to my Lego collection and will make a nice bit of conversation with my (soon to be jealous) Lego fan friends.Overall I would recommend this set to any Lego fan with an additional recommendation to go in bland and not look at the detail and interiors before buying so building it will be a blast.

I am a LEGO fan since a long time ago. I wanted to start my modular street and, after some thoughts, I bought my first set, the Pet Shop. The final result is a beautiful 2x building set that is packed with some cool build techniques and beautiful colors mixed together.I recommend this set for people that would like to initiate their modular building collection. First, because the level of difficulty is average (some above average skills on the "Pets" sign, but nothing too scary) and, second, gives you an overall insight of how modular buildings are made. Since it is essentially two buildings combined into one, the construction process is easier/faster and you can learn a lot from the techniques used if you want to apply them to build your own MOC building (that's what I am planning to do next). The interiors have some nice details, specially the Pet Shop itself, with it's 1st floor small apartment. Not so much for the interior of the Bay Area style bulding, but that's ok, because it is supposed to be a representation of a family moving to it (it has a very well done detail with the man paiting the wall inside). For the exteriors, you can check some photos I've uploaded (and commented) and see for yourself. It is a very nice building, not so big like other modulars, but the final result is gorgeous and you should definitely consider buying it if you plan to start building your LEGO street.

The Pet Shop is my second modular building and I learned from the first one that I had to pace myself a little just so that I wouldn't build it all at once.If the Lego set Pet Shop is built following the official instructions, the first house to be completed is the apartment building next door to the pet shop. There's a low basement, in which I wouldn't want to lose my minifigures! The first floor is packed with detail such as the couch and the toilet. Second and third floors are mainly empty but the spiral staircases are beautiful as are the french doors and the balcony with the vegetable garden. The first floor is occupied by a shop that sells animals and accessories for pets. The second and third floors make up a fully furnished apartment and are accessed through a fine looking stairway at the side of the building. The attention to detail is (again) absolutely amazing and the houses look very beautiful even from behind. I love the way the designers have used plants to liven up the building and the windows are fantastic. However, I do have a few minor complaints (again):1) The toilet is pretty much inaccessible and one can't even see into the toilet unless you tear down the stairs above it.2) The door to the second floor of the Pet Shop building doesn't open up completely.3) The chimneys on the roofs do tend to come off easily, especially the one on the roof of the apartment building.4) There are no panes for the arched windows (the same problem occurred with Palace Cinema).5) My hands are too big and clumsy to play with the pet shop properly (I can't get to the pet pens properly). Could Lego please send me a new pair of hands? Please? Pretty please?

Lego did it again, made an amazing building with again a lot of detail and thought put into this, let's first start with the pet shop. On the main floor, the interior of it is good especially the tiling because it works very well with the color of the walls. Also on the first floor, there's a good amount of space for play for there aren't many things in the way, so it's nicely spaced inside. On the outside of the first floor, I really enjoy the stand for it adds nicely with to the set. The sign also looks very nice from a far distance. The stair way outside was a very smart idea to connect to the second floor, so that was well thought out and well planned. The stair way outside was a very smart idea to connect to the second floor, so that was well thought out and well planned. There isn't much on the back but you could potentially add something to the back to make it more interesting ; not a big issue though. The second floor is simple yet good. It's basic for it has a kitchen and a small table, you can't really change much but it shouldn't bother you too much. Not as much detail but still effective. Moving up to the top floor, a nicely decorated bed for one person and not much else either. Overall the pet shop looks nice especially with those light blue bricks for it really makes the pet shop look unique and special. The apartment beside the pet shop looks polished and refined, mostly the exterior. This is where the techniques get more fancy, mostly with the window build for that is a smart way to build windows. I like how the color of the bricks in the apartment give it a rustic feel back in the old days. Exterior is very sophisticated. Now, the interior is a different story. It's pretty compact, I could say the only things that stand out are the stair case and the bathroom, nothing else. There's nothing special about the interior that gives you a wow factor for it's kinda plain. Second floor also, nothing inside except for some paint on the wall but you can always replace the emptiness inside with your imagination. Third also nothing too special on the inside. This apartment was mostly just the exterior that looked nice not too much on the interior. In conclusion, even though if you don't like this set, you may want to buy it just for the bricks because there is no other set that sells that many light blue bricks. Good job Lego for this is definitely one of my favorites.
The last of the early modular buildings, the Pet Store, is about to be discontinued after the longest run of any building in the series. There is a reason why it has been so successful: it is in many ways the best of the lot.It is the only one so far where you get two separable buildings. This makes it more flexible than the other modulars: it can be deployed as is, in two ways (blue on left, blue on right) but many people have realized that it is best when you buy two sets, making a wide pet shop but more importantly getting two beautiful Brownstone terraces. Just like Cafe Corner gave us a sense of Paris, so too these Brownstones give a sense of New York or Boston. This and the Town Hall are also the last of the modulars to be "truly" modular in that you can ... MoreThe last of the early modular buildings, the Pet Store, is about to be discontinued after the longest run of any building in the series. Just like Cafe Corner gave us a sense of Paris, so too these Brownstones give a sense of New York or Boston. This and the Town Hall are also the last of the modulars to be "truly" modular in that you can take out the middle floor or top floor and still have a functioning building. You can also easily add floors by buying yet more sets, to get a sky scraper. So there is a lot of fun and flexibility for display and it is also fun to build, especially the bay windows in the Brownstone. The middle floor of the Brownstone is unfurnished (the conceit is that it is being painted) but that means you are free to furnish it as you wish, just like the first three modulars. But buy it especially if you like things to appreciate in value - this one will surely follow the path of its less successful siblings and double, treble in price (the earliest three have increased by 10-15 times).
First of all I have to be honest, this is my first Modular Building purchase so my comments are only relative to the amount this set cost, the reason I purchased it and my experience building it. I can not comment on how this stands up against the other modular buildings in the series.I have always been a big fan of Lego since I was a small child collecting, building and playing with City sets so recently, in my adult life, I decided to get reacquainted with the experience I was looking for a blend of the theme that I loved as a child and the difficultly required for a satisfying build as an adult... with that in mind I stumbled upon this set.The build was enjoyable and took around 3 hours without counting breaks between building sessions. There were some tricky and fiddly building techniques to learn while constricting this set but the majority of your time will be spent sifting through the bricks as although the build is split into 4, there are still a lot of bricks per section. This isn't a negative in my opinion and I found it quite therapeutic.I absolutely loved seeing the sections come together during the various build phases and the amount of detail in things like the window ledges, flower boxes, interior fixtures and intricate brick-built signage.Considering the emphasis of these sets is in their exterior, in my opinion, the interior is relatively well appointed and features enough detail to carry on the quality and care shown in the façades. When completed, each building looks great on its own but when connected this set is just fantastic to behold.Although I will not be 'playing' with this set, I can confirm that because of the easy way the floors come apart, children (or fun adults) could play with this despite the sets being enclosed by 4 walls.I will now be purchasing the other available modular buildings sets to complement this set, in fact, the Grand Emporium is already ordered and on it's way.
I decided to build the Pet Shop after already having built a number of modular buildings (LEGO originals and MOCs).For a number of reasons I am not that excited about it:Pro's- The idea to include two buildings on 16x32 plates makes the set very flexible in terms of placing in a LEGO cityCon's- Both houses are short on the back. For one I build a little garden on the back but for the actual Pet Shop it is a bit waste of space in the back.- Little unique building technics (except probably the half circle window section). Normally, I appreciate to learn a new technic with every new modular building- Too little actual animals in the Pet Shop
I got into the modular buildnings later then most people, but once I got the cinema and detective's office I was hooked. I found out that this set was the oldest available as of now so I decided to pick this up before it's retired.I'm happy I bought this set because it looks great, just like the others. The best thing about this compared to the other modulars is that you can take these two houses apart and change the way your city looks. For example you can place the pet shop itself next to the detective's office, and then on the other side, place the other part of the buildning. It adds more variety and I like that.I feel like it was a little bit expensive compared to the parisian restaurant and while the outside of the building looks good, the inside is kind ... MoreI got into the modular buildnings later then most people, but once I got the cinema and detective's office I was hooked. It adds more variety and I like that.I feel like it was a little bit expensive compared to the parisian restaurant and while the outside of the building looks good, the inside is kind of lacking. I know it's suppose to be an apartment that is being painted, but I think it's kinda lazy design anyway. The minifigs have the standard lego smiley-face so you can make up your own story with them.I thought the set itself is actually easy to build since it's split in two houses BUT the problem is that these older lego instructions are somewhat unclear. What I mean is that it's hard to see the colour difference between bricks unlike the other modulars that came out later. Some pictures show dark grey when it's light grey and black looks dark grey as well. I actually had to rebuild some parts just because the colours in the manual was a bit off.I don't think this is a great set to play with, because the lower part can't be taken apart that well, so if anything falls down into that cellar-area, it's pretty difficult to get out. Every floor is also kind of high and tiny in size so it's difficult getting your hands in the rooms anyway. Sure you can take the floors apart, but that doesn't always help. This is definitely a set that should be displayed and for that purpose it's great. I like the pets that came with it, but the pet store is actually really tiny.A recommended purchase if you like the modular series, like to start a new collection or fancy this set in particular. I built it all in one day, and it took somewhere between 8-10 hours. It's a cool display piece and I would advice people that are interested to pick it up soon, since it's a set released in 2011 and it will most likely retire this year.
I am slowly building my modular collection, starting with the Parisian Restaurant (a great set) and the Pet Shop is my second modular. I bought it over the others in the range as I am not sure how much longer it will be on sale for, considering its age relative to the rest of the range.Overall this set is fantastic. I found it easier to build than the Parisian Restaurant, because the Pet Shop is two separate models, so there were less pieces covering the table at any one time. The two building façades are detailed and enjoyable to build, with lots of small details and ingenious touches, such as the 'Pets' sign above the Pet Shop door. Being two separate buildings also lends a certain amount of versatility, helping to bulk up a modular scene by placing them where you want them to have the most impact. The interiors of the building are hit and miss however. The Pet Shop and studio apartment above it are great, although a proper 2nd floor rather then the mezzanine would have been better. What lets the interiors down for me is the town house. Whilst the ground floor has some great detail; sofa, telephone, WC, hat stand and basement, the 1st floor is empty and designed to look like its being decorated with the painter mini-figure, roller and tray and white streak on the wall. This in my opinion is a cheap way of getting out of putting some furniture on this floor. A large bed and some table with lamp or a closet would fit and improve the overall look. This is especially irritating because the other modular sets have an extra hundred or so pieces for the same price, so an extra hundred pieces here could have provided a better furnished first floor. The same again is true of the 2nd floor, an attic space with a small balcony. There are just a few pieces built to resemble cardboard boxes placed in the room, when there is more potential to be had.My last criticism is the arch windows not containing 'glass'. All other windows do, and although I'm not sure if an arched 'glass' piece exists, it's a shame because they are rather obvious when placed next to the windows with the 'glass' inserts.Despite these criticisms, this set is overall fantastic. It is detailed outside, features a good collection of mini-figures and animals, and goes very nicely alongside the Parisian Restaurant. The set took me around 10 hours over a few days to build, taking my time to appreciate all the little details. I bought it direct from the Lego On-line Store. It was delivered quickly.
This is officially my first modular set, and it definitely did not disappoint. One thing that I wondered about is the "Expert" rating given to these sets. I quickly learned that it was all about patience and ability to deduct from the instructions. Some times you would not get the exact position for the next brick because it is obscured by a taller feature, but one you get the hang of it it is pretty much smooth sailing.I enjoyed building this set as detail after detail slowly emerged: the rat whole in the back, the little ladder from the basement, the supplies for the pet shop, the storage boxes in the third floor, the water closet. Seeing each floor come to life was a nightly reward after a long day at work. Having both buildings complete were joyful ... MoreThis is officially my first modular set, and it definitely did not disappoint. The red apartment building has furniture for the first floor, but almost completely empty for the second and third floors. Maybe the instruction booklets could include a link to the very good Creator You Tube videos?
