So I bought this set because I am fortunate enough to be in an economic situation where I could afford it, but that doesn’t mean I think this set is necessarily worth the $300 asking price. To say I don’t understand this set is an understatement. It’s advertised as an off road vehicle to be driven outside over rough terrain, but has so many peripheral details and small parts that will easily break off in the smallest of tumbles. There’s a locking differential that provides a marginal amount of torque when compared to driving without the differential lock to the point that it feels like a gimmick. It’s advertised as an off road vehicle to be driven outside over rough terrain, but has so many peripheral details and small parts that will easily break off in the smallest of tumbles. There’s a locking differential that provides a marginal amount of torque when compared to driving without the differential lock to the point that it feels like a gimmick. There are two motors that drive the main engine of the vehicle, yet it moves slower than the Volvo 6x6 articulated hauler at full speed. The hood is extremely loose and the lack of a fake engine is surprisingly disappointing. This set is not very fun or interesting to play with but the one redeeming quality is the Augmented Reality Feature in the Control + app. Being able to see the virtual gearing overlayed on top of my vehicle is beautiful. The animation is smooth and the interface is clean. It would be a crime to not utilize this technology in all future and past technic sets (at least ones with control +). I definitely think this feature is a step in the right direction and would add a lot of value to the MVP of future sets. To conclude, I’m not really sure who this set is designed for. It’s $300 price tag limits the target demographic, and it’s lack of speed and interesting/useful mechanics would make it a bore for younger children. I would personally avoid this set unless you really care about the locking differential and augmented reality feature, then maybe, only maybe, would it be worth it.

Overall this set was excellent, very interesting mechanically to build, looks good, and the RC function was a big reason for the purchase. My only complaints (which are minor) was the doors and hood don't stay closed very well, as well as there is no high/lo speed gearbox to allow the truck to travel faster then rock crawling speed. I also would have liked if there was a test step for the drive system before finishing the build in case there was a mistake made. With these few things in mind I still very much enjoyed the build and look forward to testing it's abilities further.

This is a great drivable Lego kit that's suitable for capable builders. It’s certainly testing enough for adults and will make for an engaging experience. It’s also a brilliant kit for an adult and a younger builder to share, especially for the learning experience as it’s a excellent way to learn about 4x4 vehicle mechanics, gears, differentials and torque. The Control + app adds a whole new dimension to the Lego kit building experience too. If you love mechanics and big trucks this is the perfect Lego set for you. I took over a week to build mine, spending a few hours each evening.The finished model is very impressive. It’s large and is an excellent representation of the real Mercedes Benz Zetros truck. There’s plenty of cool details like full suspension, visible working gearbox plus opening doors and engine compartment. Better still, you get to see the truck’s off road engineering in action when you put the model through it’s paces!This isn’t a fast driving vehicle, it’s more of a rock crawler, so it’s all about power, torque and climbing capability. If you want a racer, this isn’t the kit for you. The way to enjoy the mechanical prowess of this off-road truck is in the creating of difficult obstacles for it to tackle and testing the limits of what it can do. This truck can really climb and is capable at tackling almost impossible inclines. It also comes with some flag stands to help you set out your obstacles and courses.On top of this the Control + app adds a whole lot more functionality to the kit. The app is free to download and links to the truck via bluetooth. Set up is super easy, the app connects to the control hub in the truck and after the auto calibration is done you’ll be ready to go. The Control + driving interface is user friendly and allows you to drive, reverse, steer and engage your locking differential. There’s a working horn, plus there are some geometry displays which show the pitch and angle of your truck while you drive it, I love this detail. There’s also an alternative ‘drag’ control option which allows you to drive the truck with one hand. The app provides some fun challenges and goals for you to achieve but my favourite feature is the augmented reality function which allows you to scan your truck and view the virtual working mechanics in action through your smartphone camera. It’s a real nice detail, it’s great to play with and again a great learning experience.This isn’t a cheap kit but with the Control + app to play with and the amount of fun you can have driving the truck, this Lego model kit has plenty going for it.
