As built, this is a challenging model with incredible structural strength. As built this is a 4x4 truck that can handle minor off-roading. As built, this is a fun truck! A short review for what’s ultimately a short build... however... what a great looking model! In summary not a challenging build but there are some interesting technics involved. What you get here however is a fantastic little machine.Certainly not spritely, but a fantastic little crawler. You won’t regret your purchase. I would highly recommend this build for the experienced and less experienced Lego fan alike as both a great build experience (not hard, but enough to entertain) and a great active model. This is a crawler through and through and a lot of fun is to be had building obstacles to scale. As a long time Lego fan I wanted to get my hands on the first model with the new Control+ technology.First of all, the model is totally overpriced. $249 is a bad joke. In Europe it's available for about EUR 160 on Amazon, so I waited for a trip to Europe to get it there. The box is small enough to fit into a full size suitcase. EUR 160 or roughly USD 180 is a fair price for this set.Building the set is fun, the axles are very robust and it's fun to put all those parts together.Taking the finished model in operation is easy. Downloading the app tool some time, the app is big! After starting the app, I pressed the green button on the Lego hub and then communication was established seamlessly. Downloading the app tool some time, the app is big! After starting the app, I pressed the green button on the Lego hub and then communication was established seamlessly. First the app did a firmware update. Ok, get used to even firmware update your Legos :(Driving the first meters was smooth. The new motors are so much better than the old ones. I'm looking forward to build many models in the future with these new motors. After a few minutes however using the app got tedious. there is no feedback on the screen, it's difficult to know where you are steering. The app is no replacement for the real remote control. I compared 42099 with it's 10 year old cousin 9398, and 9398 is much more fun to play with! Lego, please get the remote ready! If the model had a remote, I would recommend it to my friends. With the app, it's not recommendable.
This is Lego's second take at a 4X4 remote-control truck, with the first being the old Crawler 9398 set. Well, I can tell you with certainty that the X-treme Off-roader is better in nearly every regard. For one, gone are the ancient IR receivers from the old Power Functions sets. In fact, there isn't even a remote. What you get is the new Control + platform, and a free app on your phone/tablet that you use to drive your rig around. You can unlock achievements by doing all kinds of tricks, and change the way you drive it (like using your fingers instead of regular controls). It's a lot of fun. Biggest benefit of the new system is also that you can drive it outside without worrying about distance (like the very limited infrared-based PF platform). That said, I ... Biggest benefit of the new system is also that you can drive it outside without worrying about distance (like the very limited infrared-based PF platform). That said, I wouldn't drive this into a wet mud pit...It's also fast. It's geared just well enough that it can climb most reasonable surfaces, while also having no trouble getting up to speed. Unfortunately, that comes at a bit of a price to crawling efficiency; in comparison 9398 was slow, but managed to climb things a bit easier. Push this to its limit and the motors will just cut off power. It may not be an issue for most users, but some may find it annoying.Aesthetics-wise, it's a good size, yet not as big as I imagined. It's got a Humvee-like chassis, which is cool; you can also remove the whole shell just by simply taking out three pins, another little thing I thought was clever.Overall, I think this is a good set. At $300+tax it is not cheap, and its 958 piece count doesn't reflect that value too well. That being said, you get lots of specialized parts and a whole new power control system, easily making this one of the most advanced toys on the market today. If you can see past the piece count, and focus more on the kind of pieces themselves and what you get, the set is definitely worth it.Final note is that I can't wait when Lego opens the Control + platform to MOCs (as it is currently only available with just two Technic sets, the off roader and the Liebherr excavator). By making it customizable, Lego would open a LOT of opportunities to the Lego MOC community.
A little disappointing. I got this partly because my Nephews enjoy Lego when they visit, but I am unable to let them play with this. The only method of control is the app. I have an old Android phone, which I blanked, which was ideal to let them play with it. But it is Android 5 (not even that old). All other Lego apps work, but not Technic. This one is Android 6 only. I am not giving them my current phone, and not buying a new one purely for this. So they can't play with it. Highly irritated. As has been pointed out on other reviews, the app is not a fun way of controlling an RC car anyway. The one touch thing is boring. The standard RC style remote is better, but with no tactile feedback on a smooth screen, its hopeless. My Nephew also wants a servo motor to ... MoreA little disappointing. I cannot recommend this kit as a way to get one, because he can't use the app to control his own creations (and his parents haven't bought a phone for him yet and don't want to yet). It only has availability for the Lego models ONLY. You can't create something of your own with these motors. That's ridiculous. Surely that's the whole point of Lego. Didn't the feature film even use this as the storyline? We NEED a bluetooth control box that we can use with these sorts of motors with proper physical controls! Lego, get it sorted. Please! The rest of the model is OK. The motors aren't really strong enough to climb over objects like a rock crawler. The wheels just stall, which is a shame. There is an easy fix - there are two drive cogs on each axle. Reverse these and the gearing is lowered so it can be used as a rock crawler, and it can climb over books and objects up to about 60mm tall. Much more fun to build things for it to get over. It is a bit slow, but more entertaining to see it really climb.Would have been a good option to put into the instructions. And to have built the model so it was easier to swap over. There is a fair bit of disasembly needed to do the mod.Rear suspension is also too stiffly spring. It doesn't match the front. This is a future mod, but it needs some more pieces to effect that change.Close, but not great. And desperately, desperately wants a physical controller.
Lego did a wonderful job adding detail, the decals dont look too busy like on the top gear car. Lots of playability running over obstacles and taking it out to the RC track.A few things to take note, dollar per brick the volvo dumptruck is a bigger better experience with more than double the amount of pieces. On the other hand this set is a bit more fun to play with. When you have a set like this you really want to take it outside and drive it around, that said I think lego should have printed decals onto the bricks instead of giving you stickers.I now have 4 of the control app models and I can 100% tell you that the design team is segregated and its hurting the products. Let me explain; the software engineers working on the app are in one location, the master buiders are in another and then the firmware engineers who create the servos and motors are completely unaware of how there products function and what they are being used for. This has led to all the models i have including this one to drive slowly and struggle to crawl over obstacles. Everyone needs to be in one big open room talking to each other and testing the products. On that note, If you want to make this 4x4 move faster or crawl better I suggest going to youtube and looking at the RacingBrick’s channel. In summary this model is the funnest yet, i happened to get one on the way out of Legoland Florida. I was disappointed that Legoland didnt support the Lego VIP store discounts and promotions.
I have always liked LEGO as a child and now, as a parent, LEGO is the first choice when it comes to buying gifts for my kid. But, after a long time, this particular set was for me. And it is simply outstanding!I was build it without a single break. Technically is the model on high level. It has independent suspension, differentials, rack and pinion steering, just like a real car. Two motors, one for each axle, gives a lots of torque. And when finished the model looks great on the shelve. But this is not where the fun ends. Everything is precisely controled via CONTROL+ app with proportional control, so the car do exactly what you want with absolutely no delay. After few days I have swapped few gears and sacrifice top speed over more torque, since it is more important for the crawler. And everthing gets even better! Car is significantly slower, but, with enought traction, it can climb up to 40 degrees pitch. So now I have a lot of fun making tracks for it and even more fun when riding on them. The car, the build and the subsequent fun plying with it makes me feel like a kid. It is so good that I had to own more CONTROL+ models.I can only recommend it.
I got this for my 2 kids, 9 yr old and 4 yr old. My son really just loves to look at cars and trucks so this was a no brainer. My daughter is super into legos and we started to work on this together. My son had fun putting on the sticker decals. Unfortunately, I had to finish the job but it was super fun for the kid in me too. I do think the recommended age is accurate as an older kid would probably want to spend more time with building it. But, being able to then use the app and control and drive it around made it so much fun. The motors are actually strong enough to go over small things which makes this "off road" toy actually work. Our 8 year old boy loves legos. He build the Extreme Off-roader in 6 hours, with no help. However, we will never again buy another smartphone controlled Lego set. We spend a lot of money on legos for our kids ($700 total in the last 2 months alone). We limit screen time and don't allow our kids use of a smartphone. Therefore, over the last couple of years every time our son has asked for a Lego that did not have it's own dedicated remote control, we declined to buy. Unfortunately, and against our best judgement, we finally caved during this COVID-19 pandemic and bought his first and last Lego that requires a smartphone for operation. Unfortunately, and against our best judgement, we finally caved during this COVID-19 pandemic and bought his first and last Lego that requires a smartphone for operation. We hate that he ends up using the smartphone without supervision--and he stumbled across adult content during an innocent online search. LEGO seriously needs to consider the end user, the families and kids that are effected by your choices. We will never again purchase another Lego that requires use of a smartphone for operation. And that severely limits our son's choices, because he's most interested in Technic, not Architecture series. We might have to move away from Legos earlier than anticipated and urge him to find a new pastime, unless Lego comes to its senses and builds dedicated remote controls for its products. I question Lego's commitment to kids and families, when a smartphone is required for operation. What about the families that can't afford both a $250 Lego set AND a smartphone for their kids, and don't have a spare old smartphone sitting around? Or is this particular toy not intended for kids, but only adults?Think about this: my kids love legos because we limit screen time and encourage play and creativity--not vice versa. Yet Lego forces us into a corner with a set that REQUIRES a smartphone? Quite the paradox!
