Just a note to emphasize that the color rendition of this scope is breathtaking. It is like being there, only much closer than you are. Nothing gets between you and the bird.
I bought the Leica Televid after comparing against Zeiss and Swarovski. The image through the Leica was the brightest of all the alpha brands I compared. I use this scope for birding, and I have been impressed with its performance in low-light conditions, and of course bright mid-day use. The image is tack-sharp from edge to edge, with no discernible chromatic aberration. Build is rugged, and although I am still trying to find a Leica Ever Ready case, I do not worry about this scope standing up to normal wear and tear, tossing it in a bag, and everyday field use. An impressive scope!
I bought this scope to replace my much loved Leica Televid 62 because I scratched the eye piece lens in sand and the eye relief piece broke andcould not be replaced. I'm not disappointed. Great color, clarity, focus, light. I'd buy another.
The rubber armoring on this spotting scope is seamless, durable, aesthetically pleasing and effective. It appears to be the same as used in the Leica rubber armored binoculars which have been rated the best armoring of all binoculars by some reviewers. The dual focusing wheels work smoothly and are effective. I would have liked the fine focusing wheel to have provided and even finer focus but that is a minor issue. The rotating tripod collar works smoothly and locks securely in position but I think a minor improvement could be made by adding detents at the 90 degree positions which would assist leveling the horizon for those users into digiscoping. The retracting lens shade is effective. However, it can be a little difficult to grasp and extend if the scope is ... MoreThe rubber armoring on this spotting scope is seamless, durable, aesthetically pleasing and effective. The retracting lens shade is effective. However, it can be a little difficult to grasp and extend if the scope is wearing the Leica Ever Ready Case. This can be remedied by adjusting the Ever Ready Case to fit a little loosely around the objective lens of the spotting scope. The objective lens cap is very heavy duty and capable of protecting the objective lens from almost anything but a deliberate attack with a hammer. No cutting corners here. The Leica Televid 25-50x eyepiece combined with the 82mm Leica spotting scope, gives a superb image. Optically superb, in the best Leica tradition. Clarity/resolution is outstanding center to edge through all focal lengths which is truly exceptional! Very good color. Bright image with outstanding contrast. Very wide exit pupil diameter and good eye relief so easy placement of the eye during field use, with or without glasses! An excellent candidate for digiscoping use. Works only moderately well with the Portugese made Leica 1.8 extender, which is the fault of the poor quality extender, not of this excellent eyepiece or the spotting scope.
My APO 77 was stolen last summer. The robber put it in a gym bag and left it in a northen Wisconsin field in the open for a year, including a whole lake superior winter under 8 feet of snow, till it was recovered by the police. After its odeal, it was muddy, wet, and had some superficial rust stains. I held my breath and took it home. After cleaning, miraculously, the entire scope and carrying sleeve SURVIVED! Even the camera adapter! I always had a polarizer on the lens, which I'm certain protected the main lens which and took some WD 40 to remove, but alas, there was zero damage to the entire optic. These Leicas are woth every penny!
Crystal clear, easy focusing, gathers plenty of light for really late viewing. You just can't beat Leica glass!!!! Viewing Deer at a mile you can see the slobber string from their mouths! You won't be disappointed because there is nothing better made today!!!! Jim
I used the 82 mm spotting scope last week on the top of a mountain in the collegiate peaks wilderness. I don’t know how many times I said this scope is amazing. Crystal clear and warm viewing similar to Leica binoculars. Being a glasses wearer, I was worried that the scope would be difficult to use when zooming. I glassed Near and far for deer, elk, and moose all day with my glasses with no trouble. Truly amazing and there is no substitute.
