All my adult life I wanted a Leica. Finally pulled the trigger and bought a TL-2. Very handy, does great daytime pics, but low light performance is almost a joke.Then, Leica offered $1300 off on the SL2-S. Its a dream. As you'll read it IS a big, heavy Tank of an instrument. But...the picture quality is what will blow you away. Fairly simple to operate, no where NEAR as confusing of a menu as my Lumix GX-85...Took a week to the Chihuahuan Desert in far West Texas. To Big Bend national park, the darkest place in the lower 48 states. Took some sensational Moon shots and Sunsets. The color rendering is 2nd to none. Highly recommend, just be aware it is a chunk of a camera.

I have the joystick set to punch in magnification if you press it, so choosing focus point and then punching in to focus is one easy motion. . . and you can turn the front dial once punched in for an even stronger magnification boost. I still prefer my rangefinder for M glass since that focus accuracy doesn't matter if you're wide open or stopped down, but this is the next best thing. And you can definitely get better critical focus . . . it's just a little slower than a rangefinder for manual lenses. .. .but still better than any other camera I've tried with adapted M lenses. Leica seemed to really design this to work easily with M glass.I have some native SL lenses, the 50m APO Summicron and the 24-90 zoom. Both are great on this body and produce outstanding images. I mainly use them in my tiny studio I have set up because the native Leica glass are BIG lenses and not necessarily fun to lug around. For me, I tend to carry the body and a 35mm Summilux-M on it whenever I'm using it to document my family out and about because the SL lenses are so large. I've heard the 45mm Sigma is the best of both worlds.. .functions like a native Leica SL lens with a size that's smaller than an M lens and much much lighter when you figure in the weight of the M adapter also. . .so maybe consider that as a great first all around lens if you buy this camera.

Have used previously the Canon XA10 and the Canon XF405 for internet streaming in 1080p I have over the last six years recorded over one thousand programs. I felt that I took a little bit of a risk on the SL2-S because it's a hybrid camera geared toward video usage. First, I updated to the latest firmware version. Once the battery was fully charged I was happy to see that the SL2-S synched flawlessly with my Teradek encoder. I found the Leica menu to be well laid out, super crisp, and even somewhat similar to Canon's menu navigation system, only Leica's is cleaner and simpler in my opinion. However, the battery has ample strength and my new HDMI cord handles anything up to 4K, so there are no shortcomings for what I use it for.I look forward to utilizing the SL2-S for streaming, video recording and certainly for taking pictures. While both cameras produce gorgeous images, there are differences in what comes directly out of the camera. They are not huge differences and can be easily corrected afterwards. The best review of this camera I have seen, and one that explores the differences between the SL2-S and the SL2 is the review from Steve Huff (one of the reviews on this site). For one thing, one can use less costly 'slower' glass (allowing, of course, for the need to have a nice narrow depth of field in some cases); for another, it's now possible to set a higher minimum shutter speed for longer lenses (higher, I mean, than merely the reciprocal of the focal length).All this combines with the IBIS, which is one feature that really attracted me to this body. In common with many others, my immediate reaction to that was excitement that all my M-lenses would now, effectively, be stabilized. I have not done any tests to compare shooting with IBIS on or off -- it defaults to on, and that's how I've left it so far; but I think in the occasional hand-held low-light shots I've made, it makes a difference.There are only two things that annoy me about this upgrade.The first is the loss of integral GPS. Yes, in theory, one can have a Bluetooth tether to one's phone and geotag photos that way. In practice, it simply doesn't work. As far as I can make out, I have to go through the connection rigamarole every time I turn the bloody thing on. I know I'm not alone in this frustration; and Leica has a history of churning out fairly robust firmware updates, so I'm hoping this will be addressed.The second issue concerns the 96 Mpx sensor-shift landscape mode; a fine idea, and it works well, but! Please, for heaven's sake firmware, I know the camera needs to be still and on a tripod when I'm shooting in this mode -- so please let me see the screen to compose before I allow the thing to settle into stillness... As things stand, the camera motion pop-up message obscures most of the view and makes fine composition quite difficult.Neither of those is a show-stopper -- they're both features that are nice to have, but not central to the camera's appeal.I'm still learning the camera's Autofocus system; until recently, when I acquired a Sigma 105mm macro, the only AF lenses I'd used had been rented. The camera and I have yet to come to comfortable terms on this subject, but I'm prepared to believe that this is as much user error than any failing of the system; it's not, at any rate, as good as the Canon's, but I knew that going in. The virtues outweigh whatever deficit this may prove.Overall, I'm more than satisfied; I'm excited by this camera. I second-guessed my decision to put this much money into what ostensibly was just a refinement of the camera I had, but in the end the combination of features overcame that reluctance; and I'm very glad it did. I said to my wife, this may be the last camera I buy, to which she responded, with a laugh, I doubt it. So who knows? But I think I'll be using it for some years.Note: The selection of images is somewhat pedestrian, but I haven't really been out on photo expeditions in the past couple of weeks. Of these, the monochrome image of Evie, a greyhound, is perhaps the most telling -- I have the camera constrained to 6400 ISO max (the default setting), so it went to 6400 and shot at 1/25 second at f5.6. The Sigma 105 was mounted, so I'd say that IBIS was operative here; my hand is steady, but I'm always glad of the help.

Not just because of the build quality, but also the image quality. I have been a photographer for many years and always dreamt of owning a Leica. Although I would have preferred the M-11, the price tag of body + lenses was unaffordable. I settled for the SL2-S, with aVario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm F/2.8 ASPH zoom. Great combination! I am enjoying both the camera and the lens. Image quality is great. My only concern is the cumulative weight of these two elements. I'm currently in the market for a couple of primes that will address my concern.
I ordered the kit and I am disappointed.Like many folks that are jaded with Canon's decision to make money instead of respecting their customers investment in lenses, I decided to switch to a company that has a fanatical following.According to the Internet, it is Sigma lens badged as a Leica lens and unfortunately it shows. I was disappointed in the total lack of dimensionality of the lens. Leica lenses are famous for that 3D dimensionality and that was why I switched to Leica. MoreI ordered the kit and I am disappointed.Like many folks that are jaded with Canon's decision to make money instead of respecting their customers investment in lenses, I decided to switch to a company that has a fanatical following.According to the Internet, it is Sigma lens badged as a Leica lens and unfortunately it shows. I was disappointed in the total lack of dimensionality of the lens. Leica lenses are famous for that 3D dimensionality and that was why I switched to Leica. This kit lens doesn't give this and after 7 shots I tried the 35 and the 24-90. Both of these lenses are In a different league and worthy of the Leica name. Upgrade the firmware when you get it as it makes a massive difference, both for video and photos. I suggest changing the default settings to suit your shooting style and circumstances. It has been a week now and I'm comfortable with the menus and the custom function buttons. I don't miss my Canon bodies at all. Zero regrets on the body.
