Have had the player for about a month. Liked it so much I bought another one for a different room in my house and I bought another for a friend who also loves it. The wifi is easy to set up is nice (fewer messy cables). I readily connect to the internet, my pc, or play DVDs. The price is nice (~$210) for a good quality player with all these features (wifi, hard drive, etc.). The machine is aesthetically pleasing. It loads up the DVDs, Netflix, etc. pretty quick. And I like that the fast-forward and rewind have multiple speeds. I have loaded up a considerable amount of music on the hard drive and am still less than 5GB used. First, I would like to be able to store DVDs on the hard drive so that I can access my library w/o having to rummage thru a bunch of DVD cases. Second, whenever you have to enter text (such as passwords to access my PC, or naming folders, etc.) you have to use the up/down/left/right navigation buttons to highlight the desired letter, number, character on the screen; this is pretty tedious especially if you need to toggle back and forth between lower case or capital letters. A QWERTY keyboard, as I have seen in other remotes, would certainly make this easier.

I have an LG flat screen TV and the BD590 works almost seamlessly with it, when a disc is loaded the Blu-Ray player automatically turns on the TV and links with it, when the TV is turned off, the player also shuts down. I particularly like the way the BD590 up-converts, with this player there really doesn't seem to be a difference between a regular DVD and a Blu Ray disc. On the negative side, if the player is shut off with a disc still in it, when you power up the program goes back to the beginning, making finding the point where you left off difficult. I mentioned that starting the player also turns on the TV, well almost all of the time, there are times when it has to be done manually, I'd like to have some consistency here. Another negative is - If you unload the player while the TV is off, when the disc drawer closes it automatically turns on the TV, not a great feature since it takes a few seconds for the TV to come on and unless you are aware that this might happen the TV could be on for quite a while. The unit does connect to the internet quite well, but it isn't apparent which features are available from the units embedded menu, even when logging on for any updates to the firmware, so if Pandora, Picasa and Roxio are available, there's no way to know unless you go on-line and look at the latest product literature, a poor way to service customers. Finally, I have heard of sequencing problems with LG TV's and DVD players and haven't experienced that problem while viewing movies, however with one disc, there was a mismatch between the picture and the audio, but it only happened when I went to the "director's comments" section. Overall I'd give the BD590 between three and a half to four stars, since the former top of the line player shouldn't have any of these problems, but the negatives are manageable and it is, for the most part, an exceptional unit.

I love the BD590. Its a terrific blueray player. Its a terrific networked media device -- VUDU, Cinemax etc all work well as does the DNLA access that allows me to play home movies or view photos from my PC.I bought into the hard drive feature because I liked the idea of having a digital music library acessable via my living room remote control playing through my expensive high-fi system. The ripping of CDs works very well and is completely idiot-proof, but that's where the limitations arise...The music library managment features are rather limited -- only one playlist! A much more significant irritant is that having invested the time to rip 100+ CDs, LG does not provide a practical means for moving these digital audio files back to your PC (iTunes Library). ... The DNLA access does not work from LG to PC. I cannot even use a USB external hard drive for backup of the LG. The only option provided for moving files off the BD590 hard dirve is to use a USB memory stick. Given the 100+MBs of music I currently have on my BD590, a memory stick is simply too small. The inevitable conclusion is that having conceived of a great innovation, hard drive BD player combo, LG failed to really think through user needs for such a device. Yes we need more than one playlist. Yes, yes, yes, we do need a practical means to backup the music files created on the BD590 hard drive.Recommendation: you really may not want to purchase the hard drive version of this product until LG makes better use of this high-potential feature.Other than that, its a great product.

This was a replacement for the same LG Blu-Ray player I owned that was damaged when I had to move. I needed it for my vast collection of regular Blu-Ray movies since I'm not investing in any 4K ones, & the new regular LG BD players I saw have the same features. It came in mint-looking condition with the last updated LG firmware for it, & works beautifully with the remote I kept from the damaged unit, an even better buy for what is an older unit than I'd honestly expected, I am very satisfied!
I bought this unit brand new and was particularly impressed with the 250 gig hard drive. However new apps cannot be added to netcast, the current apps are outdated and LG no longer supports this product. I am not going to purchase new LG product just because LG thinks it's not cost effective to support older products. It's easier and cheaper to get a fire stick for new apps and eliminate LG all together from my list of preferred manufacturers
Pros: Excellent Image Quality, Good Connections, Good Soundtrack Support, DVD Upconversion, Upgradeable, Backwards Compatible, Easy Set-Up, Network ConnectivityCons: Slow boot upOther thoughts: Has both Wi-Fi and RJ-45 network connections. I have not used the Wi-Fi ability because my network is on the 'g' band. The BD590 supports the 'n' standard (and the 'g') but to get the best streaming video media, hard wiring is probably the best. The built in 250 gig HHD is a plus, but not very functional. Playing audio media from a DLNA works very well, even through my 54g standard. Doing the same thing but with video (full length feature movie) is possible, but not 'watchable'. Video frame rate is 1 frame per 2 seconds. I have not tried hard wiring my desktop to the network router/switch to see what the frame rate would be (the BD590 is hard wired to the network, my desktop is '54g' Wi-Fi to the network). I do know that downloading video media ( a 12 gig uncompressed feature movie) to the internal hard drive will take several hours. Three hours and I had only downloaded 6 gigs to the 250 gig internal HHD over my '54g' network (canceled download, so I have no idea how it would have played). The front USB port, to my surprise played the same feature movie which I tried over the Wi-Fi, but compressed down to 2 gigs to fit on the USB stick. The frame rate was bad, but 'watchable'.The remotes interface is good and comprehensive.
Pros: Lots of features, Upgradeable, Excellent Image QualityCons: Difficult Set-UpOther thoughts: I've had this unit for almost 3 months now, so I've had a chance to use most of it's features.Starting with connection and set-up: Well, my home theater system is somewhat complicated now, so I needed some help. The Phone tech support folks at LG were very helpful - detailed in their explanations. I found the set-up menu a little undaunting, but again the tech support got me through that. What really sold me on this unit, are the many features it offers in one slim box. One of the main reasons I purchased the BD590, is because it accepts a variety of media: from disc, USB connection, and shared files from your computer; and of course the 250GB of storage space. However, the music library feature needs some improvement. For one of the CDs I archived, Gracenote failed to find the correct artist/album. I was able to re-name it in the 'directory mode' in the music library, but the new names didn't carry over into the 'library mode'. Also, after archiving a CD, the library mode shows only the name of the album, not the artist. Adding the artist (re-naming it) is a long process using the key pads.I absolutely love the Netcast feature, and it's upgradability. It just recently upgraded to include Internet TV. Also, I like the variety of movie streaming services, and especially Pandora radio!I don't have much use for the Home Link feature. 90% of the songs I have downloaded on my computer were via itunes - so since the BD590 cannot accept M4p files, they can't be played - unless I convert the files, of course. So, I'll just plug in the Ipod to my stereo! The picture quality I found very good - even the HD streamed movies. So, I think the unit has only a few bugs to be worked out. Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying my newest entertainment device!
Good picture quality, but it can not read certain files; for instance it can read everything I downloaded from the net, but it does not recognize anything I filmed with my DSLR Canon, Nikon P900, or my Sony. I bought this particular model because it has the zoom option, that zoom button is (or it should be) on the remote. The remote I received must be from a different model since there is no zoom button. Now I have to shop for the proper remote.

The wi-fi with d-link at 30 feet works great. Pandora works well with the music. Some people may have difficulty setting this unit so get a friend who is an enthusiast to help. I use my USB flash stick to play pictures or music although I have already downloaded some music to the HD and it works well. One problem I do have is the sound quality. I connected my Yamaha Receiver to the digital output but the sound is not like what you get from a CD as it lacks 5/1 or 7/1 sound output. Its ok to just listen if you are having dinner, but don't expect the same vibrancy as from CD. The unit was able to play a 6 year old CD prepared on my computer and other downloaded turner classics black & white movies in full screen. I have to admit this was excellent. I have not had a chance to play Blue Ray so I do not know what to expect. Another problem I found was the front door when I first got it on 9/2010 would stay open so what I did was by hand open and close it a few times to kind of free it up and now it closes fine.
Pros: Easy Set-Up, Excellent Image Quality, Good ConnectionsCons:Other thoughts: I purchased this player not only after reading the reviews on here but on several other sites as well. This player is one of the best investments I have made in quite some time. Thus far, the features I've used on it have worked without any issues at all. This is my first blue ray disc player, its replacing a basic Samsung DVD player which still works. It connected right up to Netflix, You Tube, Pandora and Internet TV wirelessly, I have watched about 10 movies on it so far, listened to Pandora, watched You Tube, and Internet TV without a single glitch, I watched a movie while my laptop was downloading 21 updates (I hadn't used in a while) wirelessly and it didn't slow down or ... I have a broadband connection and a good wireless N router which is one of the keys to getting a good quality signal to the player. The player was a snap to set-up, it was so easy that my wife did it! We were watching Netflix within a matter of minutes after opening an account with them. The player downloaded a firmware update almost immediately after going live on the Internet. It took about 20 minutes to complete. When it rebooted, the player had two more additional channel choices on it other than the choices it came from the factory with, Internet TV and the MLB channel. I haven't put the software on the disc it came with on my computer yet, but that will be soon because the wife wants to start looking at the many pictures we have stored on the computer, we'll now be able to view them on the TV with this player. I was so impressed with this player I purchased the previous model (BD570) for the living room which is basically the same player without the hard disk drive, it is something I didn't need for the other room. The price point for this player is one of the best things about this player, it was a steal for [$], similar players with the same features were more but this player has a 250G hard disk drive, no other player on the market currently has that feature to my knowledge. I have no problem recommending this player. Its a solid player that does what it says it does without any issues thus far.
