I was very surprise by the accuracy from the speaker in being able to locate where enemies were coming from. Within a single game I had grown to love the speaker and can happily recommend it as a go-to for gaming - even in an online competitive mode. The speaker is synced to my desktop gaming PC via USB, my work laptop via bluetooth and my mobile phone via bluetooth - each accessing the system with a tap of the on-speaker input button.disconnecting the power supply unit and finding that the speaker is also a fully functioning portable speaker with its own in-built battery is the icing on the cake.A powerful, clear sounding, beauty of a speaker which enhances any PC gaming setup.

I was impressed! Gaming with the GP9 was a joy! But, what about music? It’s got you covered there too. The GP9 is able to deliver great range when playing back music and the bass isn’t lost while being mixed in with the treble as with most sound bars without subs either attached or built in.The unit looks great and feels very premium. It weighs a reassuring bit while being light enough to move about if you do wish. Useful since you can use this as a portable Bluetooth speaker. The connections at the back are impressive too, allowing for USB C, Optical and standard audio in connectivity as well as the Bluetooth. The GP9 also allows for HD Audio and DTS playback through compatible headsets when they are plugged into the unit which is also a great offering for the audiophiles out there. You can calibrate the sound via the app to suit your personal requirements. The problem we faced was trying to connect my sons wireless headset to the speaker. We couldn’t find how to do this on the manual, online resources or by the sales advisor. This worked on a PC setup, but we just couldn’t get it to work with the console and Voice Chat.In summary, this is great gadget, amazing design, sound and portability. We can see the appeal for PC users. As a first time user , setting up speaker with a console, and wireless headsets was a daunting task. Shame we just couldn’t figure it out.

Good Speaker, Confusing Marketing
24 May 2022

I was interested in this speaker since it is LG UltraGear and matched the design language of my LG UltraGear gaming monitor, but when it finally arrived it seemed like it was a party speaker in disguise. It required the LG XBOOM app to set up, and it is on LG's website with their XBOOM party speakers. To be clear, the LG GP9 UltraGear Gaming Speaker sounded great in every use case I tried, it just did not seem to match the use case that was advertised. I am definitely glad I waited to complete my review, as the speaker has improved over time via firmware updates and a Windows app that did not exist when I unboxed the speaker. I am definitely glad I waited to complete my review, as the speaker has improved over time via firmware updates and a Windows app that did not exist when I unboxed the speaker. The LG XBOOM app was still required, I had to perform an additional update to use the PC app.As previously mentioned, the speaker sounds great. It gets loud without getting crackly or cutting out the bass. I am sure there is a limit, but I have not reached it at my volumes. Indoors it is room-filling at about 30 (my office is about 11'x11'), and I the sound remains clear throughout my patio without getting to the max volume. I wish I could have tested the DTS Headphone:X support, but I don't have a compatible device. There are a few cons, but they are minor gripes vs deal-breakers. I was annoyed I need the smartphone app to set up what is advertised as a gaming speaker. It is also worth noting that it is really a Windows PC gaming speaker, there is no Linux or Mac app, and unless you have a previous generation console it is not easy to connect to the speaker for the current game machines, regardless if your "team" is red, green, or blue. I also wish the speaker had a volume indicator. It is also frustrating that this speaker isn't controlled by one of the other LG UltraGear apps! This is more of an LG overall problem vs a problem with the speaker, but LG has an app that controls the sphere lighting on my monitor and I wish those functions applied to the speaker (having the color of the speaker change to match the color on screen or activated by sound), most gaming devices with RGB color can be controlled by several different apps, but the LG UltraGear products require dedicated apps for color control. Anyway, fewer apps to configure would be better.Nitpicking aside, I can definitely recommend this speaker to a friend, especially since one of my friends "accidentally" took it home for a week after a bbq. I am happy with my purchase and I really appreciate that LG has continued to improve the product.

Great for gaming; otherwise, impractical and pricy

I purchased this speaker for gaming but also work purposes. Before first use, I was wondering if it’s possible to combine all essential function of a wireless soundbar, a powerful speaker and a functional device for online video conferences. During unboxing, I notice how heavy this speaker feels in my hand. It feels solid and powerful despite its small size. It was fairly easy to set it up and connect and upon its first use, I was impressed how powerful it really is. As the drivers are facing upwards, it gives that surround-sound feeling, which is important in game-play. This is where this speaker really excels. Its power can also be transferred to headphones when using a slot at the back but since I only have wireless headphones, this is pretty useless for me. ... MoreI purchased this speaker for gaming but also work purposes. Its power can also be transferred to headphones when using a slot at the back but since I only have wireless headphones, this is pretty useless for me. This, in fact, leads to the only major problem that I’ve found, which is the microphone. During a video conference at work, my colleagues complained about the sound quality. I later noticed that it wasn’t great when I watched the recording back after the conference. The only solution for me was to use my wireless headset with an in-built microphone. But that meant having to disconnect from the wireless speaker. Another limitation for many users may be its price. Costing just under £500, it may prove too much for some with limited budget. The battery life, too, should be much better. It only lasted me 4 hours without charge which, compared with other headsets and speakers, is not quite enough for a full working day. Having said that, it’s still a great speaker, supported by LG XBOOM app which lets you use the equaliser and change the colour of the light on the speaker. Overall, I would not recommend this speaker to an everyday user as, despite its strengths, it doesn’t provide a good value for money.

Pairing was easy as did not require any passcode, possibly a bit dangerous if out and about? I tested the range and found it to be about 5m before the sound started to breakup. I started streaming music and then the sound, wow, for a small ish speaker, it does really pack a punch for it 20W 2 x Tweeter and 2 x Woofer setup. I tested the units volume, and was told by my wife to turn it down! the speaker main light at the front does flash when the unit has reached its max volume. After half an hour, the battery ran out and was the able to fully charge the unit overnight.Day 2, I tested out the battery, still in Bluetooth mode. I set the unit up streaming a radio station at about 15%. The info on the web states that the battery should last 5 hours, however, after 5 hours and 5 mins, the battery warning light did start to flash (This indicated 10% battery) , but to my surprise, the speaker continued to play for another hour and 5 minutes taking the total to 6 hours 10 minutes.Day 3, following another over night charge, I started to delve deeper into the XBOOM app. This allowed the lighting to be customised to one of 16.7 million colours to match your setup. It however currently doesn't allow the lighting to be turned off, this facility might improve the battery life further. The app also allows you to set a custom EQ, so I went with a setup with more low range bass to suit my preferred music. The change was noticeable and I felt like this made the speaker more pleasing to the ear.I then plugged the unit in to the PC, this was very easy, no installation of drivers required (Windows 10), the speaker an mic settings defaulted to the speaker and we were away. This speaker was better than the current 2.1 setup. Playing games, was able to hear the sounds clearly from left to right to identify the enemy. The mic I found to be intermittent, but possibly be fixed with an update.Overall, I was impressed with the speaker, but only 4 stars due to price.

Pros: The GP9 delivers clear and crisp mid ranges while delivering impressive depth and virtual surround sound using its powerful array of 4 drivers while delivering a shockingly powerful and impressive bass through its built in Sub that fires out of the back of the unit. There are none on the unit, so in order to change the LED colours, you must install and use the LG Boom mobile app and configure them through that connected via Bluetooth meaning that you must interrupt audio playback when you wish to do this if you are using sound output from a source that isnt your mobile device with the app. There is also no colour spectrum auto cycle mode option, meaning that the unit will remain a single colour for the LED lighting until you manually change them via the app. I hope LG update the app and GP9 software to support this in the near future as it feels like an odd thing to leave out such a common and obvious feature when it comes to gaming gear LEDs.

The console doesn’t have an optical port, so we had to connect HDMI from console to TV, then Optical from TV to Speaker. We changed settings on the TV and successfully connected the TV and console for sound. The problem we faced was trying to connect my sons wireless headset to the speaker. We couldn’t find how to do this on the manual, online resources or by the sales advisor. This worked on a PC setup, but we just couldn’t get it to work with the console and Voice Chat.

great portable speaker

With us being a gaming family, we were excited to try it out. I like that it's versatile and compatible to be used with a PC, gaming console and your mobile phone because it has a USB-C port, optical port and has bluetooth. All the ports are in the back and are covered so no dust or dirt can get in them. It has a built-in microphone with echo-cancelling as well so you don't need gaming headphones as well as the speaker. It has a long battery life of 5 hours so you can play longer and can be charged with the power adapter that's included. It has great sound that fills the room for such a small speaker. All of the buttons are on the top and are easy to use. I love that it's portable because you can use it in any room or even take it with you on the go. It's lightweight and compact which makes it easy to take from place to place or room to room. Ours has been used in the living room and bedrooms for gaming and music and my son even took it in the bathroom while he was showering and getting ready for work. It also has customizable RGB lighting so you can make it your own. I think it's a little expensive for what it is. With it being portable, a carrying case would've been nice to have been included.
