A Very Disappointing product

Very shortly after the warranty expired the subwoofer (Sbn5B-W) ceased working. I have a technicians diploma so I investigated. A power supply failure became obvious as the cause. Looking for a schematic I found the discussion forums were alive with users having issues that appear to be identical to mine. An email to the president has yielded no results as yet. No schematic is available, LG recommends replacement of the entire EBR89625801 board which appears to be common throughout the entire series of LG sound bar subwoofers. After I complete this review I intend to see if I can get a replacement power supply/amplifier board from LG customer service.

The sound bar and subwoofer provide adequate sound quality. Sound quality was best when playing music, for tv watching alone, the frequency was so low that enhanced sound (beyond that of the tv’s built-in speakers) is negligible. I had the system less than a year and it stopped working. Specifically the subwoofer turned itself off one day and hard resets (with LG representative on phone) were unable to even get the power light back on. I have sent the unit in, which was not easy as they require the consumer to box it (difficult with a roughly 15” tall square subwoofer and a 40” narrow sound bar) unless you are one who keeps all boxes things arrive in for the day you have to send them back. Purchased the soundbar and subwolfer when I bought an LG OLED TV. Product worked great, until it didn't. Like so many who have written reviews, the subwolfer just stopped working. No power. Done. Did all the troubleshooting. To add insult to injury, the support from the chat was as bad as it gets. Frustrating and useless. The TV has been great, but I would NOT purchase the soundbar and subwolfer and wont purchase any LG audio products in the future

Great while it worked.

The Good: I purchased this to improve dialog during movies and it made and IMMEDIATE impact. Clear separation and a substantial improvement over previous 2.1 sandbars. The bass response is good and the ability to place anywhere to improve sound is a great advantage. The Bad: The subwoofer stopped working and it rendered the system unusable for movies. It became evident that Much of the midrange was being handled by the subwoofer and while dialog was still good, and the sound became thin and narrow. The Bonus: Currently being fixed by LG even though warranty expired by two days. Waiting for system to come back. Currently avoiding movies as sound thru TV is junk.

I bought this just under a year ago and it has been fantastic until now (month 11). Easy setup, everything connected wirelessly with ease. Occasionally the wireless sub would disconnect/fade out; this was a rare occurrence but just thought it may be the WiFi signal or people on the cell phones interrupting the signal. Now, the sub is connected but there is no sound, going through all the necessary reset instructions with LG did not resolve the issue. After being given at least 10 different phone numbers of local repair shops, none of them repaired soundbars or anything under warranty. That said, LG was kind enough to send me a return label to send it back to CA to be evaluated. I was told this is a 2-4 week process so I don’t have anything else to add until I get the unit back. For the price I paid for it, assuming it was because it was discontinued, I feel content with my purchase as long as I don’t have any other problems with it.

Nice replacement for our current audio system

The LG SN6y is a nice little soundbar. This one is just the 3.1 model, but you have the option of adding more surround sound speakers to give you a 5.1 ch sound experience. This particular model just comes with the sound bar and a sub woofer, again, with the option of adding more speakers to it later. It boasts delivering dimensional, virtual sound with only 3.1 channels and DTS Virtual:X. As LG puts it: With DTS Virtual:X you can transform any movie, TV show or playlist into an immersive, multidemsional audio experience. DTS Virtual:X envolops the listener with Virtual height and virtual surround channels, plus enhanced bass and crystal clear dialogue. Sounds all nice and fancy, hope it lives up to the hype. The soundbar has High resolution audio, and uses adaptive sound control to automatically adjust sound levels, bringing out treble or bass based on what you're watching. You can connect this soundbar to your TV via bluetooth, optical cable or HDMI. There are 4 sound modes on this sound bar: AI Sound Pro, Bass Blast, Bass Blast+ and DTS Virtual:X. I've only tried a couple of the sound modes so far and I like what I hear. The sound bar is compatible with some TV Remotes, It has Smartphone remote app, Auto volume leveler and Dynamic Range Control, both of which are controlled from within the app. It supports HDMI Audio Return Channel, or ARC for short. It can handle Firmware updates over the air, has a nightmode, lcd display auto-dimmer and simplink. The soundbar has a width or length of almost 42" long, 2.2" height and 3.4" deep. While the subwoofer measures at 7.1" width, 15.4" height and 11.5" deep. So far I've used the sound bar for watching movies, tv shows and listening to music and have been pleased with the quality of the sound coming out of it. Our current audio system is a cabling nightmare, so swapping that out for this soundbar will be a welcomed delight.

Overall great sound bar with some minor flaws
21 April 2021

Overall, the LG SN6Y is a great budget sound bar. It provides good sound and good bass (almost too much at times with the out of the box settings). One flaw, for my set up, is that HDMI ARC overrides the optical input when both are connected. This eliminated my ability to have two different devices hooked up to it in different ways--something I would have to do to get proper multi-channel sound from an NVIDIA RTX card in my PC due to a limitation with my LG TV. A "flaw" of the LG ecosystem is the confusion around DTS and pass through. An LG CX television will not pass through DTS sound, only Dolby Digital, so the DTS support on this LG is wasted if you have a source device providing a DTS signal and trying to send it to the sound bar via ARC. Not a huge deal if you also have Dolby Digital available, but confusing that one part of the system negates a feature in the other. That being said, this sound bar does play very well with an LG TV in terms of remote control and Simplink control. It's nice being able to automatically control both devices with the TV remote.

Perfect set up without all the hassle
19 February 2022

I received this product as a Christmas gift in late 2020. I’ve been watching movies and tv shows trying to get through this pandemic, like any normal person, and the gift came at a much needed time. The set up was super easy — even a Luddite like me figured it out. In less than 10 minutes I had it out the box, positioned well, and connected to my smart TV. A little over a year later my subwoofer died. Just literally stopped working. Wouldn’t connect, or turn on. I went on reddit and apparently this is a common problem that happens frequently with this brand. I spoke to customer service and despite it being slightly outside the manufacturer one year warranty they gave me a free extended warranty to have the unit repaired. They even sent me the box and shipping label. So even though I was upset and disappointed that the sub stopped working, I felt happy with LG’s customer service department to have the unit repaired. It didn’t cost me anything, just time really. So my advice if you purchase this product; register to have it under warranty then get the extended warranty. That way they will help you — because eventually something will happen with this product and it is good to have it repaired or replaced.

Poor Equipment All Around
23 August 2022

I'm giving this a terrible review because the subwoofer does not, will not, and can not connect. I have gone through all of the steps to fix this that are both online and through LG's customer service with no results. No there is not light on the subwoofer at all and it will not turn on. They said that my product was out of warranty and gave me the number of a repairman lol. Kill me. What is the point of this? You can't stand by your product and instead send me to a 3rd party to get it fixed? The cost of the fix is more than the unit is worth. Sound quality was overall poor and we are in a row home so you are very close to the system. The major gripe of course is the lack of connection on the subwoofer but overall the product is bad. Avoid.

Subwoofer Doesn’t last
30 January 2023

I bought this sound bar with subwoofer 2 years ago assuming it would last at the least 5 years. I am hard of hearing and bought the unit with subwoofer to enhance tv viewing for me. Unfortunately, a couple months ago I realized the subwoofer wasn’t working, no green; or red light in the back of the unit. After multiple attempts to reconnect, I reached out to LG customer support for assistance on 2 occasions. They ended up telling me I should have purchased an extended warranty. Customer support was not helpful. The outside technician they referred me to was rude and not helpful. I didn’t purchase an extended warranty because I trusted LG to make a product that would last longer than 2 years. Now I am left with a working sound bar only.
