Through ai room calibration the system feels out the space in a room to fill it with sound so it is important not to block the sound bar or sub woofer. My living room has 12ft ceilings and filling the room with quality sound was not a problem. The bar has 8 different preset sound functions to choose from depending on what type of sound you are looking for. For example it has cinematic or clear voice for movies, sports, music, or AI that chooses which sound will be best for you. Whether it be at max volume or low the sound quality is clear and doesn't distort. I have it hooked up to an LG TV and it has definitely enhanced my viewing experiences. It has Bluetooth technology so it is easy to connect other devices to the sound bar wirelessly as well. Overall I would definitely recommend it. My only reason for not rating it 5 stars is that for the price I feel it should have come with the screws to mount it.

For any movie fan, this a must have. It is bulky I will admit. The soundbar alone must be 55 inches which isn't much of a problem. The 5.1.2 speakers definitely make it worthwhile though especially with the upfiring speakers. The soundbar has built in WiFi and Bluetooth including a number of connection options including HDMI e arc, and optical. If you are have a 4k TV I would recommend a 2.0 hdmi cable. (Easily found on Amazon) Also works with 5.1 encoding. I was watching battleship and I literally had missiles flying over my head.

Sound is good but software lacking
22 February 2022

The soundbar has good sound but there are a number of software problems with it. Problem #1 is the HDMI input will not start playing on the LG TV the device connected to the HDMI input is turned on. When the device is turned on the soundbar turns on and the TV turns on to the correct HDMI input but the HDMI is not being passed through the soundbar. I always have to hit the input button on the soundbar remote to get the HDMI pass through to work. I am using ARC audio to the soundbar. Problem #2 is after using the soundbar to play Wi-Fi audio using Alexa control then turning on the TV the soundbar will play audio at the wrong clock rate and it will be garbled. Problem #3 is the soundbar will sometimes lose Wi-Fi connectivity so that Alexa can no longer use the soundbar. The fix for this is to open up the soundbar application then hold the Wi-Fi button down for about 10 seconds until the soundbar resets. Again this doesn’t happen too often but when it does it is a pain.

Sounds good, but…
22 October 2021

Having recently come from a component setup, there are a few things that aren’t obvious from the marketing, which are a definite step down from what I’m used to- The ‘AI Room calibrator’ has hardly any visibility of function, and zero ability to fine tune the results, compared with how an AV receiver does it.- The AI Room Calibrator had zero effect on the subwoofer and bass levels, which are overbearingly high out of the box. Turn your bass DOWN manually.- For an app-based product, the apps are terrible. Example: The LG Soundbar App is what you need, but the manual lists a now defunct app. The LG app didn’t have the ability to manually check for software updates until yesterday. Turn your bass DOWN manually.- For an app-based product, the apps are terrible. Example: The LG Soundbar App is what you need, but the manual lists a now defunct app. The LG app didn’t have the ability to manually check for software updates until yesterday. After extensive calls with LG support, I find out that the Google Home app does automatic software updates, but not the Alexa or HomeKit apps. Additionally, some of the functions in the LG app actually do the opposite of what they describe, such as ‘Auto Volume on/off’, which actually causes more volume spikes when enabled than when disabled.- Version 2109301 of the firmware has made the soundbar constantly ‘want’ to use the HDMI ARC input, and power cycle when it doesn’t receive an audio source there, despite the only device being connected to it being via the OTHER HDMI inputOn the more positive, this is one of the few times where an ‘auto sound mode’ works really well. On my previous receiver, which was pretty good, I turned off all the automatic sound levelling functionality because the smarts were pretty dumb. But with this LG soundbar, the ‘AI Sound Pro’ mode is actually really good when you watch content in a range of formats from a variety of streamers. Watching in a small apartment using that mode, plus DRC and Neural:X enabled, the sound levels are consistent and still punchy across all the content we watch that isn’t Atmos. And then of course Atmos overrides those settings anyway. So with that little bit of trial and error, what I’m left with is a soundbar that sounds great, and requires zero fiddling with volume levels throughout the night. We set it once when we start watching something and don’t need to touch it.

There's no lag between what's happening on the screen and what we're hearing. As far as I'm concerned, it's close enough to a hardwired connection to the TV.Keeping with the cordless theme. the soundbar also came with a big sub that connects wirelessly and instantly which was nice. It was also available instantly as a casting option through YouTube Music and basically any other app that could cast to devices. On the audio front, I've been really happy with it. The audio coming from the soundbar is super crisp and the subwoofer booms. We were watching Black Widow the other day and with the volume at 60% we weren't missing the theatre experience in the slightest. Again, sound was clear and the sub shook the floors.Overall, this is a solid unit, doesn't require a ton of wires, and the bluetooth connection keeps up with anything you're looking to do.

[Rewarded Review] A Solid Soundbar
1 November 2021

The first soundbar I purchased was an LG SL4Y. It was so great, I decided to purchase another one. The SP9YA is a soundbar with theater-experience quality. It has depth, and it also provides clarity of many different sounds. The Dolby Atmos is particularly impressive. I also adjusted the levels of the speakers in the soundbar (Center, OVR, Side, Rear), and it adds even more depth to the supporting sounds and more clarity to the dialogue. The subwoofer and Bass adjustment on the soundbar give a strong movie-theater kick to sports, TV, or movies.I like that LG puts the inputs (HDMI, optical, etc) to be straight in rather than a side entry. I still find the design of the soundbars to be incompatible with either a side or straight entry. I have an idea on how to fix this. If LG wants to contact me for this idea and pay me for it, I would be happy to share, but after getting ripped off by a streaming service, I do not give out product improvements for free.I am glad that LG put rubber feet on the soundbar because placing the soundbar directly on a hard surface can be tricky without placing it down too hard. Still a bit tricky, maybe more rubber feet. The LED display on the soundbar does not turn off or dim. It can be distracting, but it is not an issue of concern. It would be helpful if the soundbar display dimmed, but the sound quality is superb and that is what a soundbar is about.I purchased this soundbar during a sale, and I was able to afford it for that reason (using a payment plan). I am glad I was able to find it during a sale.It would be nice to have a "cinema" option on the soundbar itself (although I am able to achieve this with the LG UP8000 series TV).

The built in Chromecast and Apple Airplay allow me to cast my music from anywhere in the house, and also link up to other Chromecast devices for a full party mode. This sound bar paired great with our LG 4k TV, using the single HDMI e-arc passthrough allowed for full HDR and Dolby Vision and seamless integration with the TV with out the need for multiple remotes. All in all this is the easiest set up for a soundbar and TV configuration, no complicated configurations or settings. Just singe e-arc port to HDMI and its ready to go. In addition to ARC/eARC, it also has an HDMI input for an additional device. I have my LG bluray player connected, and it is very seamless. I don't even have to change the soundbar input. When I change to the HDMI input for the soundbar and bluray player, the soundbar automatically changes for using the bluray player. When I change to streaming or live TV, it automatically changes back to eARC. I also like that if I want to share something directly from my phone or computer, there is a plethora of options for Bluetooth and Wifi.As for sound quality the SP9YA definitely does the job. It is rich and clear. I watch a lot of varied content and also play videogames. When watching content with Atmos encoding, it definitely works well and allows the sound to envelop you. The subwoofer is pretty powerful as well!Overall this is a great product from LG, and definitely recommended for anyone who does not like running wires, or just isn't able to set up a traditional home theater.

I received the SP9YA (SP9) at a discount in exchange for my honest review. I got mine bundled with an LG 75QNED99UPA TV. It’s designed to be seamless with TV taking advantage of AI processing of the TV to produce a neutral realistic sound. One HMDI cable and I was good to go.In the box is the SP9, a sub, a remote, mounting brackets, and an optical cable. This is a 5.1.2 system. Setting it up was straightforward. Plug the bar and the sub in, and they automatically connect. I purchased the SPK8 rear speakers to upgrade to 7.1.2 sound. In my testing room I have a full 7.1.2 audio system, so I really wanted to compare apples to apples. The SP9 is aesthetically pleasing. The bar looks nice sitting at the base of the LG QNED – they were meant to be together. The display is on the front, easy to read. The Atmos up firing speakers are on either side of the bar (grills on top), and there are side firing speakers. The sub is simply stated. The SP9 has a solid build/feel to it. I hooked it up to the TV with an HDMI cable (Arc). There is one HDMI input (I did not connect an external device), optical input, and Bluetooth connectivity. For my testing, I streamed directly from the TV’s apps. I checked out movie scenes from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, music videos from YouTube, and streamed music from my phone.I realize not everyone with get the rear speakers, but I personally think they complete a perfect surround system as the bar itself will not do justice to rear channels (no straight bar really would). The SP9 shines with cinematic content. I was taken back by the immersive sound, the clarity of voice, the punch of the sub, and just the overall quality of the sound. It compared quite nicely to my 7.1.2 setup which did surprise me. I think partnering with Meridian really strengthens the SP9’s clarity and realism. Everything sounded clean. The sound was forward, and with action scenes was in your face. With straight up music from the phone and YouTube, I feel my audio system does quite a bit better. The SP9 does well with music, but it just did not floor me like it did with the cinematic content. The remote works well with settings as do the controls on the top of the bar, but I suggest using the LG Sound Bar app as it’s much easier to see all of the settings and tweak the system.I have 5.1.2 audio systems in 5 rooms. I did not expect a sound bar to rival them, but it does. I absolutely recommend the SP9YA and suggest adding the SPK8’s to complete the system.
