A Great Tool for Finding Your Tone

I find myself experimenting with all of the different tones you can get from this amp and using effects I have not used much in the past. It is really entertaining. I think this amp excels in the cleaner tones and like most of the reviewers, I especially like the boutique model. There have been a lot of comparisons between this amp and the Katana amps. One disadvantage that reviewers point out is that you can only use one effect and reverb at a time. This isn't an issue for me because one effect is all I normally use. The power attenuator is a great feature to allow use at home without blasting everyone out of the house and the sound does't suffer at lower power settings. It also has direct out which I have used to feed into my PA. I believe this amp is rugged enough to take out to gigs. I highly recommend this amp and for the price, it's kind of a no brainer.

I really like this amp! The power settings are great for practice, noodling and blasting and think this is a very cool and unique feature on an amp. The overall sound is really good, although my tele can get to sounding really twangy, my strat sounds fat and big. The reason for the 4 starts is the issue with getting to effects. My amp doesn't always land me in effects for some reason. Since I mostly use pedals for the effects that I need it's not a big deal. Monkeying around with settings on stage is a pain so pedals are really are the best solution. Overall though, bang for the buck is high and would recommend this amp to anyone looking for light good sounding amp for various uses.

I had a Boss Katana 50, and although it's a great sound through the PA, the tiny speaker cabinet just wasn't putting out a thick enough sound. I debated getting a Katana 2x12 or the medium-sized 100-watt, 1x12 version but decided to take a chance on the Catalyst instead. It's a different sound than the Katana, but I'm happy with it, and the 100-watt, 1x12 version that I got is definitely thicker-sounding at practice. I've played 3 shows with it and the sound people say it sounds great through the PA. I just go XLR out of the back; no mic necessary. All the different amp models seem handy and I'm enjoying getting to know them all. I use the amp clean on the edge of breakup, and get distortion through various pedals.

Game changer at the price
8 April 2022

Unashamedly a competitor to the Boss Katana 50, but excels in a few key ways. The low/medium gain sounds are fantastic - the "boutique," "chime," "crunch," and "dynamic" models really are as good as many small 15-watt tube amps you could buy for twice the price - and this is about the size and volume as one, as well. The I&O is also excellent, with a full effects loop and cab-and-mic-simulated XLR direct out, two things the Katana 50 lacks. Where the Katana bests the Catalysts is in the very high-gain sounds (which have a slightly unnatural decay in the Catalyst). Also, the effects section is much more robust in the Katana, although the effects in the Catalyst do sound great (just very awkward to access from the front panel). But if blues, jazz, classic rock, and alternative rock is your thing, there's absolutely NOTHING out there that competes in terms of sheer tonal quality at this price. I sold a Marshall DSL40C and bought this because of a recent move and in many ways, I think this is just as good despite being less than half the price.Go for it if: you value the raw amp model quality above effects selection, want a simple interface that behaves like a regular amp, or need fully-featured I&O for outboard effects, a modeler, or for gigging.Stay away if: you want flexibility with onboard effects or play exclusively high-gain.

Great lower gain tone, articulation and value!

I owned a katana and an orange crush 35RT and this is the best one for me. It is more than loud enough and is not as directional as other amps. I play mostly rhythm and edge of break up tones that this amp really excels in. The katana I feel is better for higher gain. This amp just feels much more responsive and organic for everything else. Guitar articulations are much more punchy and present and sound similar to the fender tube amp I compared it to at the store. Clean tones are very clean with tons of headroom. The crunch setting is what I tend to leave it on. It cleans up with a roll of the volume knob. I mainly just connect it to adjust the built in noise gate. The line out is a simulated output that sounds scary similar to an actual mic'd cab. I directly compared it with a mic and the difference was negligible. My only complaint is the line out is line level (not mic level) and is very hot. The channel volume must be turned down unless you have a gain control that can be cut.Overall I have found a winner in this amp. It feels like it very well made (much better than the Katana) and will last a long time and looks good too. I would not hesitate to buy it again. It's very versatile and an excellent value for the amazing sounds you get.

Just what the doctor ordered

After suffering a disabling back injury I needed an amp that was easier and lighter to move and set up than the tube amp combos I was used to playing through. I never cared much for the solid state amps as they could never duplicate the warmth a tube amp provided and was considering retiring from live performance altogether. Then I heard about the Catalyst series of amps and decided to try them out and was amazed! My bandmates were as well, telling me how much more clean and clear my sound was. Programming channels was a snap ( just follow the "cheat sheet on top of the amp and read the manual) and the manual button provides the familiarity of a regular amp, and at a third of the weight of my Blackstar 40 watt tube combo I can continue to perform without dealing ... MoreAfter suffering a disabling back injury I needed an amp that was easier and lighter to move and set up than the tube amp combos I was used to playing through. I was so impressed I went back to GC and got the 60 watt Catalyst as well for home and playing at open mic and jams. I couldn't be happier with these amps and am grateful for the help and guidance the folks at Guitar Center in Concord Ca. always provide.

Katana Killer

This is the perfect amp series; Line 6 killed it when they made the Catalyst. The ability to practice quietly, .5 watt power, 30 watt power or 60 watt power all by turning a knob is great. The catalyst takes pedals be it individual pedals or a multi effects pedal, there is plenty of headroom and the speaker is able to keep up with ease. What sets it apart from the Katana is the Line 6 effects that are built in if you use Catalyst as a modeling amp. The speaker is clear and bright, not muddy or dull like Katana. Sure this is all subjective to what you like, but if you're looking for great sounds that won't fizzle out when you crank the amp and we'll rounded tones, Catalyst kills Katana in those areas. Oh, I almost forgot the catalyst app. Very easy to use compared to Katana. There are only two downsides but not a deal breaker by any means. The cable you need to connect catalyst to your computer/tablet/or phone is not offered when you purchase the amp and no foot switch to switch between banks or channels. You can easily buy the foot switch and the cable is dependent on what device you choose to use the app with so it makes sense Line 6 wouldn't supply it. All in all, Line 6, yet again takes the lead in amps and effects for solid state amplifiers.

Line 6 Catalyst 100 with Helix
19 September 2022

I've been a Helix user for over five years and other modelers prior to that primarily direct to FOH. It's been a few years since I've needed an amp for live performance. I play electric and acoustic guitar and mandolin, all served well by the Helix. In another band I had used a Fishman Loudbox for acoustic and mandolin. I was called called to fill in for a guitarist in a cover band, this group all used amps. After much research I decided to trade in the Loudbox for the Catalyst 100. I know the Catalyst is an entry level amp and tone options may not fit all needs. I have all I want built into the Helix, so using the power amp section of the Catalyst worked perfect for me. I found the 50 watt setting carried perfectly in this band with drums, bass, guitars and vocals. I believe this little amp gives a lot of bang for the buck. And there is plenty more for me to explore with it.

Not good for anything
11 February 2023

If you play fast or need good note separation, this is not the amp for you. Get a little tube amp instead. Taking mine back right now. Flubby Muddy Drone sound. General sound reproduction is awful. Effects are kind of cool. I wanted a portable light amp for writing music with friends and to spare the wear and tear on my tube amp. I'll probably go with a Marshall DSL5 or something like that instead and continue using a pedal board. I wouldn't Recommend it even for a beginner, you're not going to be able to have the clarity you need to develop basic skills. I'm playing through this with a strandberg Boden 7. Active Fishman's. Some of the clearest pickups on the market. Pure Mud on this amp.

Versatile modeler amp, easy to use with manual channel.
20 April 2022

This amp is versatile and easy to use stand-alone. It has a great selection of amp models built-in, along with enough effect and delays so that you can find something that you like fairly quickly. I like the clean and boutique models with some reverb. Then I played around with the other models, adjusting settings and effects. You can adjust everything on the amp, not necessary to connect a computer. I did find it confusing initially due to all the different methods required, i.e. "press a button", "press and hold", "press for 2 seconds", etc. That's why I read the manual a few times! Line6 puts a nice 2-sided "cheat sheet" on top of the amp around the carrying handle which is a lot easier than flipping through small pieces of paper staring at small font printing. So don't remove the amp-topper sheet and toss it in the box with the rest of the packing material :-). The best feature of the Catalyst amp is the manual channel. This is WYSIWYG. Adjust the knobs and controls just like a "regular"amp. You can then save the settings once you get something you like. In the future I will connect the amp to the computer and see what else you can do. Right now I am quite happy with the Catalyst amp and I highly recommend it. Go get one!
