I cooked eggs and burgers on this so far and the after taste from the "seasoned" finish is not enjoyable. It also is a fire hazard as grease can leak over the very short rim if not monitored closely. The food stuck badly to the pan with use of butter and oil and was a pain to clean. I have an old lodge cast iron pan that works better. I have side lined this griddle for use on my wood stove if needed during an ice storm as a hot plate only. I'd suggest a stove top griddle with a deeper rim and one that has no chemical coating. No where does it mention what is used to "season" this pan.

I really wanted to love this pan; I have been using cast iron for decades and love it, however the only thing I've held on to is the highest-quality non-stick double burner griddle because it's just so easy for making pancakes, meals for two, and so on. I was HOPING this pan would replace it, however so far all it has been is frustrating. The surface area is a lot smaller than I was thinking. The description says 16-3/4 x 9-1/2, however the cooking area is actually about 16 x 9 ... MINUS the two corners that are cut out, as well as the engraved LODGE logo near one corner. It's very difficult to move it around while in use ... there's just nothing to grip on to safely. The walls are only about 1/4 tall, if that, so food spills out easily. In my former, high-quality non-stick double burner griddle I could easily cook eight 4 pancakes at the same time. This morning I just tried using this cast iron double burner griddle to make pancakes - I knew it would not fit 8, so I tried six. Mistake. Both batter and oil spilled over. Not a ton of it spilled, but NONE should have spilled. I could only successfully do 2 pancakes at a time, and made them a bit bigger than what I usually do. In general: just frustrating. It will definitely take some tweaking and getting used to. It's not useless ... it's just not nearly as efficient as what I am used to.I'm hoping I can use this pan while camping - either on the fire, or on the grill. That would redeem it a little in my mind. I'd love to hear what others are cooking in it ... how others are using it successfully; maybe that would give me a few more ideas.

FOR a pure cooking surface, plancha style, I might give this 5 star, but for my use, if I had the ability to return this , direct to Lodge, I would. Shipping, packing, and handling by Walmart was excellent, and product was shipped and sold as advertised, so no complaints on that side. My fault is with the [handling] handles . If this SITS on your stove top, and you don't have to move it, while hot, I could give this 4 stars. To use in the oven, which I did twice, or three times, I border on a FaiL or 2 stars. Reason? It is an exercise in handling, without burning your fingers, and in my case knuckles. Which I did in two separate incidents. 1) the way the 'handle' is made to be level with the top surface, you only have spacing to slip in a silicone type pot holder, ... MoreFOR a pure cooking surface, plancha style, I might give this 5 star, but for my use, if I had the ability to return this , direct to Lodge, I would. It is an exercise in handling, without burning your fingers, and in my case knuckles. Which I did in two separate incidents. 1) the way the 'handle' is made to be level with the top surface, you only have spacing to slip in a silicone type pot holder, which I used. 2) to grip, move, shift, or otherwise get to the cooking surface , if the unit is on an oven rack, your pot holder, MUST be carefully placed between metal edges, cooking surface (sic. cooking!), and the oven rack, and bring yourself, is a distinct possibility ! The actual cooking surface [flat] side, is excellent for making an omelet or carmelizing a burger. Speaking of burger; I made one last night, and it cooked perfectly, BUT the grease splatter is significant. There really isn't any more than 1/8th." of a protective lip, so all the spatter, goes everywhere. that said, the fat from the burger, seem to roll into small edges, surrounding the surface, so that was very good. Making a heavy feta cheese omelet came out perfectly. I like the cast iron quality, but do not like the edge handling pseudo handles. I don't think this product is right for everyone, and not recommended in the oven. As I said, 4 stars, maybe 5 for cooking surface, a fail for handling, and if I had to do over, would get a product with a better handle, that would allow use of oven mitts, or even the silicon pad, without buying your knuckles. (Now that I see how much splatter was released on my stove, I doubt I will EVER use the ridged side. If you placed inside a grill, which is redundant, unless you were grilling delicate fish, then the ridged side would be fine. But w/o handles, and protective side lips, a fools use).
Awesome griddle! I have a classic two-burner coleman for car camping, and this was a perfect choice for everything from pancakes to burgers to stir fry en masse. Was worried based on some other reviews if it would be too small, but covers both burners well and has great heat distribution if you keep an eye on the flame. Highly recommend, great addition to camp kitchen. Not sure why I didn't snag one sooner!
Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Grill & GriddleThis is a beautiful grill, and griddle, perfectly seasoned by Lodge. At almost 11 pounds weight, it's heavy, solid, so, it both distributes heat evenly, and retains heat for awhile before the grill/griddle can be picked-up with, or without silicon mitts. The handles on each end are shaped to make room for fingers underneath, no matter whether the grill, or griddle, is facing up. Great design I don't recall seeing before.A poster is sticky-stuff-stuck onto the grill side, and once removed, reveals delighful encouragement along with brief instructions for use and cleaning. It's a "Winner!" (you'll understand when you see it)Breakfast is my main meal everyday. This morning a "breakfast sandwich" was the plan, with one egg, over hard, 2 ounces of sliced sirloin tip, sharp cheddar, tomato, onion, honey mustard and mayo! And, a small apple. Yum, under 600 calories!! This meal usually needs two of my cast iron skillets, one with a lid, and a lot of handling of utinsils and food between stove and kitchen countertop. The picture with the grill side full of cooking food is my breakfast, all being cooked in one place, at one time. The cheese was melted onto the bread by two minutes under the oven broiler before bread and cheese were moved onto the grill for light-butter golden-brown toasting. The sandwich was stacked on the grill and spatula'd onto the plate where the apple slices were waiting. It felt like this meal took only a fraction of the time to prepare and cook, this time. I'll do this again! My stove has a teflon coated, aluminum "grill" that was long ago delegated as a place to set thing down. Not great for cooking. And, it is hard to clean because that grill won't fit in the kitchen sink. The Lodge grill/griddle is 19 inches long, under 10 inches wide, and fits nicely in the 22 inches of diagonal in the sink, with room to spare. My Lodge skillet brush and soapy water had the new grill looking like new. Since most of my daily cooking is in cast iron skillets and pots, a large silicon sink mat already protects the stainless steel sink from dings and scratches.I'm really pleased with how my meal turned-out "off the grill," and how much fun, yes "fun," I had cooking with a grill that delivers a picture-perfect great meal.
Lodge cast iron worked for your grandfather. It’ll work for you.Good cast iron. Treat it well and it’ll last forever. One thing worth noting is that this has a small lip. Makes flipping pancakes and eggs easy. Also makes it easy to drop small things (e.g. cut vegetables) off the griddle. Consider a pan or a griddle with a lip (Lodge makes one) if you plan to do more stir-frying, etc.
In the past six months I had tried no less than 10 different reversible griddles from different manufacturers and I think I finally found the right one. All of these reversible griddle are designed to be used on two stove burners and therefore they are all about the same size about 10" to 11" wide x 17" to 19" long. Some have carrying handles on the outside of the cook area, some have the handles recessed inside the cook area and that affects the actual useable cooking area. Some have grease gutters and that reduce the cook area. This Walmart exclusive Lodge reversible griddle has actual useable area of 11"x 17" and it can take on the entire rack of baby back ribs on the grill side. On the flat griddle side I can put three 6" pancake rings staggered or four 5" egg ring staggered. Even it was pre-seasoned from Lodge I still seasoned it with avocado oil in the oven at 465 degree F for an hour and I did the seasoning two times. The griddle side is now non-stick for pancake, egg, beacon, and sausages. The grill side is hard to say, the baby back rib itself did not stick to the grill, the BBQ sauce carbonized on the grill and that took some scrubbing with the nylon cast iron scrapper to remove the charcoal and burnt on grease between ridges, fortunately the spacing between ridges is wide enough the most brushes can get down to the surface between ridges. The handles were very small and hard to grab with oven mitt on or pot holder. The pros: largest cooking surface on both grill and griddle sides, very non-stick, not too long and does not stick out of you stove top. The cons: small hard to grab handles.
Works quite well and it is versatile for cooking all sorts of meals. I read some reviews about people’s cast iron rusting and giving the product low stars… let me tell something: What you need to do is after you clean it with water, is that you have to put it on a burner or heat for about 1-4 minutes depending on heat source after to EVAPORATE the water. Then, you put your oil on it with an old rag or something similar (don’t burn yourself) to season it. I use avocado or coconut oil personally and it has been fine. It won’t rust. I have had cast iron for years. This method works every time. Store it in a place where there isn’t any moisture. I just keep mine on my stove because I use it often. Pretty easy. Hope that helps! I purchased to use on a propane grill. I call it the PMB (poor man’s Blackstone). The griddles fit almost perfectly. I did season them just to make sure (they are pre-seasoned out of the box). Doing smash burgers the grease does build up (with no where to go) and there can beFlameups if grease overflows. I simply sop a little up with paper towels and move on. Does the trick and far less expensive than a BS. More versatile as well. Can use one or all three griddles depending on number I’m feeding. I can also use the grill at the same time by removing one or more griddles. They seem to clean up well. If they get bad, no biggie, I can remove them and clean them up in my utility sink.
