A Tolkien trilogy of films well worth watching.

I had read the books, many years ago, but never seen the films. My granddaughter said I should watch the trilogy, as I would find them truly entertaining. She was right. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the films and despite their antiquity, (2005 for the 3rd one) they were impressive. Well worth watching.

A great set of DVDs, great value for money, fantastic story.

A great set of DVDs that breaks at the end of each one at the appropriate moment leading to the next one. The quality of the DVDs is great. I bought them because I love the story, have read the books many times over the past 20 years, and was delighted when the decided to produce the film. It is a shame that some of the book content was omitted, because I consider certain things vital to the story, but if you want to know what you've missed read the books! The film was brilliantly produced given what they had to omit, and the cast excellent. I watch it often.

A trio of outstanding and beautiful films.

Three amazing films that well portray the British based stories of the late, great J. R. R. Tolkien. Contrary to what our friends from New Zealand may claim, The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit are NOT based in their country, the films were only filmed there. That said, the scenery selected for these films is truly stunning. The cinematography is outstanding, as is the acting (for the most part). The effect, costumes and special effects are second to none and deserve the highest praise. The films progress at a pleasing pace, never too slow and rarely too fast, especially for those of us who enjoy reading the books. They cover all of the salient points of the books without missing too much. Being fair, if they had stuck to the ENTIRE contents of each book, you would ... MoreThree amazing films that well portray the British based stories of the late, great J. R. R. Tolkien. What could have been a tacky Americanised betrayal of British literature instead manifested into a cinematic encapsulation of everything that made The Lord of The Rings a true masterpiece. In modern times we have started to decay as we become trapped in the pollution and apathy of the city life. In modern times we have started to decay as we become trapped in the pollution and apathy of the city life. Nature is gradually stripped away; shrink wrapped in the plastic of materialism, and diluted with the felling of trees and the building of a safe environment in concrete prosthesis. The Lord of the Rings allows the modern audience to catch a glimpse of the long forgotten value of life, humbleness of existence and the universal humanity that bonds us together in our struggle against a harsh world. The quest for the ring is as much a display of human resilience as it is an exciting story of good vs. evil. The moral issues and the philosophical debates that this film represents are layered together in a web of meaning, sight and sound that merges into something spectacular. Peter Jackson has done an incredible job to prevent this film from turning into some nausea inducing Zena Warrior Princess mockery of history. Instead he chose to respect history, employing teams of hundreds of armourers from around the world and spending years creating arms and armour which remain historical as well as fantastical, just as Tolkien intended. This is a theme that remains throughout the film; commitment to the books' on an almost obsessive level, devouring the viewers attention as the intricate plot unfolds. In summary I'd say its a decent film, none of the actors have American accents which is a good thing. I don't mean to be racist or anything, but honestly, American accents and suits of armour are like fish and chocolate; they both stink and are unconnected, both historically as well as in terms of taste. In answer to the question posed by ebays lovely review system, I bought it because it was only a tenner for the three films and I fancied a treat :)

Lord of the Rings - Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings is a film trilogy consisting of three fantasy adventure films based on the three-volume book of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien. The films are The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). The films were directed by Peter Jackson and distributed by New Line Cinema. Considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious movie projects ever undertaken, with an overall budget of $285 million, the entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in Jackson's native New Zealand. Each film in the trilogy also had Special Extended Editions, released on DVD a year after the theatrical releases. Each film in the trilogy also had Special Extended Editions, released on DVD a year after the theatrical releases. While the films follow the book's general storyline, they do omit some of the plot elements from the novel and include some additions to and other deviations from the source material. Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the three films follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) as he and a Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring, and thus ensure the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron. The Fellowship becomes divided and Frodo continues the quest together with his loyal companion Sam (Sean Astin) and the treacherous Gollum (Andy Serkis). Meanwhile, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), heir in exile to the throne of Gondor, unite and rally the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, who are ultimately victorious in the War of the Ring. The trilogy was a great financial success, with the films collectively being the fifth highest-grossing film series of all-time (behind Harry Potter, James Bond, Star Wars, and Shrek). The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 Academy Awards nominated in total. The final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King, won all 11 of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated, tying it with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards received for a film. The trilogy received wide praise for the cast and for the innovative practical and digital special effects

When it turns out that his elderly relative Bilbo (Ian Holm) is harbouring the ultimate Ring of Power and the evil Nazgul riders of Sauron are coming to find it, Frodo is entrusted by wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to deliver the Ring out of the Shire without it falling into their hands. Frodo leaves the Shire aided by his cousins Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd) and trusty friend Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), but they soon realise that the agents of Mordor are everywhere and that their trip is far from over. Once they reach the Elvish realm of Rivendell the Hobbits form part of the anti-Sauron fellowship, which includes Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Boromir (Sean Bean), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom), Gimli the dwarf and of course Gandalf. Together they must battle across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom, the fiery chasm in the centre of Mordor. In 'The Two Towers' (2002) the Fellowship of the Ring has now divided and Sam and Frodo are lost in the hills of Emyn Muil. They are also being followed by Gollum, a creature who promises to help them find the Mountain of Doom. Meanwhile Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for the hobbits Merry and Pippin in the Kingdom of Rohan, which is currently being attacked by Saruman's orc armies. Gandalf returns as Gandalf the White to remind Aragorn of his destiny to unite the people of Rohan with Gondor. Whilst the Fellowship are not travelling together they must unite against the powerful forces coming from the Two Towers: Orthanc Tower in Isengard where Saruman has bred a deadly army of 10,000, and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dr. Finally, 'The Return of the King' (2003) won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Gandalf manages to rally Gondor's fallen army with the help of King Theoden of Rohan for the biggest battle in the history of Middle-earth; and Aragorn finally faces up to his responsibilities. They are obviously out-numbered but are determined to keep Sauron distracted in order to enable Frodo to complete his quest to destroy the Ring by throwing it into the fires of the Mountain of Doom. Starring: Elijah Wood, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Christopher Lee, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Miranda Otto, Brad Dourif, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble Directed by: Peter Jackson Music by: Howard Shore Produced by: Michael Lynne, Barrie M. Brilliant films, totally understand why people say theyre epic. The production of the films is fantastic, and still so good considering they were made 20 years ago! The acting is amazing, and I loved the trilogy, it has everything, friendship, suspense, love, courage.
