As soon as we finished our first game I couldn't wait to play it again. The Lost ruins of Arnak is pretty addictive. There are plenty of options about where to score points. It is often compared to many other games but I would say that among others it reminded me a little bit of clank and splendor. clank because of the different paths, scoring options, and item enhancements. And splendor because of collecting the right material combinations to get what you want or need. I love this game and have added the expansion to the top of my wish list. The down side that I see, and it has been mentioned before, is the component storage. They give you a lot of bags but then you just toss all the bags in the box. Min & Elwen have a huge hit on their hands. A wonderful thematic euro game. One really feels like part of an expedition exploring the island. A fresh new take towards deck-building. A worker placement board that expands as the team of explorers venture deeper into the island. A market place that adds to the theme, allowing the players to discover more artifacts as each round progresses, while creating a smaller pool of items to procure. The tech track is also beautifully built into the theme, discovering more & more secrets of the island in order to finally discover the lost temple, which provides rich rewards. Overall, an excellent fresh game that makes it's way to my collection.

In Lost Ruins of Arnak, you're the leader of an archeological team exploring sites to collect resources and knowledge. It's an attractive game, with artwork straight out of bad '60s nature sci-fi. The mechanics combine worker placement with deck building -- the cards represent resources you can use either to support expeditions that you do with your two meeples, or to acquire more cards. One interesting element is "fear" cards, which can clog up your hand and reduce your victory point total. You accumulate fear points by failing to defeat monsters at the sites you uncover or by acquiring artifacts that generate fear (as well as resources). There's not much luck involved -- you rise or fall on the strength of your choices. That's my kind of game, so I liked this one ... MoreIn Lost Ruins of Arnak, you're the leader of an archeological team exploring sites to collect resources and knowledge. Replayability might be an issue, although there's a ton of variety in the cards you can acquire. Plus there's a flip side to the board that offers a different "research" track, which leads to the game's largest trove of victory points. It invites some analysis paralysis, if you tend to overthink your moves. Still, it was quick to learn and reasonably quick to play.

Lost Ruins of Arnak combines the mechanics of deck building with worker placement in a way that is very entertaining. There's nothing truly new here, but the theme is quite fun and the games we have played have been very close in score. The choices you make are impactful and definitely have ramifications down the road, especially considering how few rounds there are in the game. However, due to the nature of the mishmash of mechanics, the turns do progressively grow longer, so I cannot recommend you play this with more than three people. Our three player game came out at a nice two hours, but our four player game dragged to three hours. There is a tendency toward analysis paralysis in the later turns, so my best suggestion would be to tell people to plan for a ... MoreLost Ruins of Arnak combines the mechanics of deck building with worker placement in a way that is very entertaining. Our three player game came out at a nice two hours, but our four player game dragged to three hours. There is a tendency toward analysis paralysis in the later turns, so my best suggestion would be to tell people to plan for a first choice action and a second choice action on their turn (just in case the first choice is blocked by another player). That said, it's a great, fun game. Medium complexity. I highly recommend you play some atmospheric music like the Indiana Jones soundtrack during it.
This game I think is more geared towards adults, but it doesn’t mean that children couldn’t play it but I think that they would do better if an adult is there, guiding them and helping them becase there are many layers of strategy and so I think that could be overwhelming for a small child. The game is Indiana Jones-esq, so there are ideas raiding probably historic cultural sites without regard to the native people. But if you put those ethical questions on the back burner and take it lightly it’s an OK game. You buy things, move up a “temple track” and confront guardians which is a euphemism for kill or take control of, but if you just look st the symbols and turn off your brain, sure. I mean, the guardians are protecting the temple you’re raiding and you think ... MoreThis game I think is more geared towards adults, but it doesn’t mean that children couldn’t play it but I think that they would do better if an adult is there, guiding them and helping them becase there are many layers of strategy and so I think that could be overwhelming for a small child. I mean, the guardians are protecting the temple you’re raiding and you think they’ll be your friend after you invade and attack them? Regardless, the components are very nice and the game is OK. I wish you could befriend guardians and have them as allies. But no. A video game of the same ilk might be more worth your time. Since I don’t play video games, I’m keeping the game around for friends to try out.
This game oozes vibes of Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, and Nathan Drake! It is only bolstered by that feel through the art on the board, the tiles, and the cards. It’s fun to discover new places and see what guardian you have unleashed. Yes this is a deck lite deck builder, but you will only have a few opportunities to draw cards you previously bought. There is an element of worker placement, but it is also very light. You have two meeples that you can move to different locations on the board. The 3rd and, in my opinion, main mechanic in this game is a track. This track thematically leads to a hidden temple full of treasures of knowledge that can be priceless. Having said that, there are a lot of options and ways to get the resources you need, in order to advance up the track. I’m addition, there are various ways to get points in this game, but I still think it will be hard to beat someone who advances all the way up the track. This is a great family or mod weight game. Easy to set up, easy to learn, easy to teach, fun to play, doesn’t outstay it’s welcome.
Many games that receive the amount of positive hype as 'Arnak' did do not deserve it. They are hyped because of miniatures, KS sales etc, but 'Arnak' is as good, probably better than its hype attends to.There is plenty to do for all players, in fact there is more that you want to do than is possible each turn. This makes it one of those games that is infuriatingly frustrating but similarly addictive. It is a bit of a table-hog due to the size of the board and necessary player areas, but all aspects are within vision and reach of all players.Simple but coherent and logical mechanics.Definitely a 5 star game.
This game mixes deck-building / worker placement in a very interesting way. It plays well at all player counts including solo, and the components are very nice! The game does not include any sort of insert, just a bunch of plastic bags, so this ended up being my first foamcore project! The board is also very big! You will need a big table to play this with 3 or 4 people.
I would not have purchased this game had it not be on sale on NerdzDay and I mistook it for a different game (Quest for El Dorado)...oops. But I don't regret it. The components are quality and there is SO much replayability in the base game. It was super easy to learn, the solo mode is a decent way to dig into the mechanics. After finally getting some friends to the table, it was easy enough to teach and feels pretty well balanced. No regerts here
My wife and I both really enjoy this game and the mix of worker placement and tableau building. It's easy to learn and to teach and the teens enjoy it as well, so it makes for a great family game. It is paced really well to boot. It forces you to make tough but logical decisions on whether to buy cards, explore, etc. that are really fun.The artwork is amazing. Playing a game with components that are as solid as these are make the entire gaming experience better. Our only complaint is that it can start to seem the same after repeated plays. There aren't that many Guardians or sites to explore over multiple plays so you get used to them and they aren't as exciting to reveal. We are really hoping for an expansion that will add variety to the game.In addition, the ... MoreMy wife and I both really enjoy this game and the mix of worker placement and tableau building. We've only played with that side of the board once. We much prefer the base game.Despite those minor quibbles, we think this game rocks and we'll be going back to the jungle as often as we can.
