I usually don't post reviews but the quality of this product is so bad I couldn't let it slide. I've had two of these melt after minimal use. I purchased the first one thinking Milwaukee always had excellent products and didn't even look at the reviews. But after a short period of use, the plastic collar that attaches the soldering tip melted. I returned it thinking it was just a dud and got a second one. Within 5 minutes, the second one melted in the same place. The plastic screw on collar can't withstand the heat and just melts. I've attached pictures for reference. The collar really needs to be metal for it to provide the quality that I've come to expect from Milwaukee (especially at the price of $200 for the tool with 2 battery's).

I really like this soldering iron. You can't beat the convenience, and it heats up well enough for the toughest automotive connections, and is fine enough for my HAM radio work. My only disappointment was that recently when soldering some 10 gauge wire to an alligator clip for a jumper wire, I noticed that the plastic collet that the outer element screws into had started melting, and the outer element was bending to almost a 45 degree angle! I turned it off and gently moved it back to the correct position before the plastic cooled, but the thread in the plastic collet is now pretty much shot, and I am worried it will be weaker now, and just melt again. I would have expected some sort of heat resistant material in this critical fitting, but appears not. I didn't have ... MoreI really like this soldering iron. I didn't have it on for more that maybe 10-15 mins, so I am now turning it on for just a few minutes and turning it off between processes, which is painful waiting for it to reheat and use unnecessary battery power.

I use this every couple weeks to solder. Worked great on small jobs but this week was doing more solder, had several wires that were pinched and as I was doing the second set the tip started moving around like it was loose. Shut it down to cool and noticed the rubber nut had started to melt. Was able to finish the job after cutting away the melted rubber and tightening back up the tip but when I was finished it had melted again only this time it was stuck! Only 7 months old hope it gets covered. I sent an email but haven't heard back.

I bought one iron about a year ago and loved it. I did small wire repairs at work with it as a mechanic. It lasted a year doing one wire here and there as simple repairs. I started an electrical project for myself and my first iron died so I sent that out for repair but being in the middle of my project I bought a second one off the same tool truck I sent the first one back with and not even a few days later the second one did the same thing it blinks but won’t heat up so now I have two paper weights. These are great if you only need to fix one wire but if you have multiple stick with propane
I bought it june 12th 2023 it is used for car audio installs it does not get left on for periods of time over 1 minute if it does its for a max of under 2 minutes. Today (july 11th 2023) it crapped out on me. It's light turns on it tells me the battery life left and it flashes green to indicate its heating up. I can hold the end while it's "heating up"... I for one am extremely extremely disappointed in the quality of this item from the brand that I genuinely go to first as I am not a massive purchaser but I have friends with full packouts like everything they own is milwaukee. Any and all electric tools I own are milwaukee. Perhaps this is one tool. I'll have to find somewhere else unfortunately. I'd also want my money back vs going through the warranty department ... MoreI bought it june 12th 2023 it is used for car audio installs it does not get left on for periods of time over 1 minute if it does its for a max of under 2 minutes. As cordless electric soldering irons go, this is pretty much the best. It doesn't advertise as high a temperature as some of the others, but it boasts a much higher wattage meaning you can sustain the high temperature it can reach while transferring heat to the workpiece in order to achieve full penetration with the solder. It's so good I've bought it twice: I bartered mine away and replaced it with the Matco cordless electric, but the Matco couldn't heat up butt connectors. It was only good for smaller twisted wires. I mostly use it as a hot staple gun and bought another Milwaukee from Zoro.
I had multiple projects lined up waiting for this thing to arrive, and it breezed through them all flawlessly. First, out in the car, I needed to fix a bad wiring connection, replace it with a soldered connection and heat shrink. This iron warmed up super quickly, and I used the XC battery so I could leave it sitting on the carpet of the car without falling over, while still on. It is larger than a pencil iron, but I actually find that an advantage, it's nicer to hold and control, and not having to navigate around a cord or try to not burn the cord is simply awesome. The one downside using it here demonstrated, is the iron does take a while to cool down. The light indicator will stay on until it is completely cooled, so it's great having that indication, but it does ... MoreI had multiple projects lined up waiting for this thing to arrive, and it breezed through them all flawlessly. The one downside using it here demonstrated, is the iron does take a while to cool down. The light indicator will stay on until it is completely cooled, so it's great having that indication, but it does take just as long as a normal soldering iron to cool off after use.My second project was indoors where a corded iron would have been typical, fixing some computer speaker wire my cat chewed on. This would be a case of breaking out the iron on a flip-up stand, or possibly using a 3rd hand to hold everything together and make the connections. Putting the Milwaukee iron at 45 degrees worked great, and again with the XC battery for stability. It's actually pretty solid with the compact batteries as well, I just don't trust that enough yet, and might as well use the nice heavy bigger battery for more stability anyway. All in all, this iron is more convenient to break out than a corded iron, particularly since it heats up so quickly. I still have to leave it out like a corded iron for it to cool down, but I consider that a minimal trade off for having no cords to deal with. Doing both semi-quick projects on an XC battery wasn't even enough to bump it down a notch, so battery life I fully expect to line up with Milwaukee's claims. Since I already have a ton of batteries and chargers, it wasn't worth getting the case for this one for me, but it'll be finding a permanent home in my electrical toolbox to replace my butane iron, and I'll definitely be breaking it out instead of a corded iron even at home too.
So I have had 2 of the older model soldering irons both of which broke in the same location everyone else's has. In the last week I purchased the new model which appeared to have resolved the head breakage problem however the iron stopped working after 30m of use. Took it back and got another today. What do you know same result. Now I have to take this one back. Dare I grab another one? There must be a manufacturing defect. Please advise.
I've now joined the ranks of the disgruntled. While reading the bad reviews on these about all the failures, I thought, all of my Milwaukee tools have been excellent so, I figured people must be doing something wrong to cause the failure such as leaving them on for extended periods (although that should never be an issue in the first place). Nope! Mine failed as well and I can safely say I didn't even use if for a total of 15 minutes since I bought it. I have used it just a few times for very short periods of time so mine should never have had a melting issue. Last time I used it, I let it heat up and then tried to angle the head and that's when it failed. Now it won't power up. There is a definite design flaw with this tool. Of course, it's beyond the warranty ... MoreI've now joined the ranks of the disgruntled. Of course, it's beyond the warranty period. Before this failure, I was thrilled with the performance of it (extremely quick heat-up time, easily portable and with the bigger battery, it was self standing). I bragged about it so much a friend bought one and now I feel guilty that I steered him towards a lemon.
I've waited for many months to review to ensure I had no problems. Others mentioned the plastic melted. for me, the solder iron works incredibly well. Really fast heat, really strong heat, and very maneuverable to get into any space to solder wires. I've used it hundreds of times now, and zero issues. The tip is still in very good condition, and I all I do to clean is wipe frequently with a brass sponge/moist sponge. Very happy
