I own a countertop business for 37 years and have owned a total of 3 of the #9924 3"x 24" Makita sanders through the years. These sanders are workhorses and are very reliable for daily construction use and you can sand right up against a wall when needed. One last thing- You also can use 4" wide belts on this sander, as that is all that I ever use or order for mine. Great heavy duty sander that I highly recommend and they will last years even with daily construction use! Texas Road Runner

Word of warning...when you open the box and see the steel/cork plate exetneding way out, you think that's some defect. As if the platten is for a 4 inch belt while rollers are for 3. It allows to track belt right at the edge. Actually it is one of the great feature of that sander, it allows for very wide tracking moves and positioning belt right where you want it...It was designed after trials and errors and plenty of debug and adjustements, just like a good tool should be. My only gripe would be about the fact that the brushes could last a bit longer (even if they probably are close to best). I just wish they had a brushless fully sealed sander out there but i don't think it exists yet or it's way too expensive. So if you have to settle for the least worst sander at a reasonable price, this is it. BtW, do not buy a sander with a little roller in front like some Dewalt do, it tears the belt in no time and is of no use in real world. Belts are expensive, The Makita is gentle on them, that might be my very favorire quality about this sander. Also, forget about adjustable power settings, you always need more power and go full blast unless you are sharpening pencils. This is a sander designed around belt management and when you get engrossed in sanding, all that matters is the belt, not the sander. That tool has achieved the best transparency as far as not existing and letting the belt do the work. It's one ugly but perfect tool, and you learn to love it like you love your Boston Terrier. I ahve to explain that, sorry....I have a pet one kid said about "my God, that is the ugliest dog I have ever seen!" It hurt my feelings but he was probably right. Anyway, the Makita is like my Boston Terrier, one ugly tool you will get addicted to and miss for the rest of your life. Good thing about tools, they have no souls and are not unique.

I bought this product and immediately put it to the test. I used it to sand a fairly large amount of my deck prior to painting. It's a large job for a small tool. It held up really well and I'm very happy with the purchase.
I purchased this to re-finish my deck and from the get-go something didn't feel right about it. I had contemplated on whether or not to buy the step up model above this but my local store didn't cary stock of it so I went with this one instead. I really appreciated the bare-bones aesthetic on this tool that Makita is so well known for but it kind of feels like they are resting on their laurels a bit. An example of this is the dust bag as it not only attaches to the main unit via a very unnatural clip, but it also still uses that awkward plastic slide to stay shut instead of a zipper. On a more positive note, the motor did sound very, very powerful (when it wasn't shutting off). Overall I wasn't impressed at all and went with a different big-brand and was much happier.

Also it has a rectangular hook up so vacuum dust collection is not an option. The shoe or plate is also 4" - I suppose so you can run the tracking of the belt left or right depending on the sanding situation. That doesn't bug me, but it is there. Bought this sander 33 years ago - yes three decades plus. Has worked through 4 carbon pads and flawlessly on multiple fine (dining tables) and heavy (deck) jobs. A timeless classic by Makita.
I bought this sander a couple weeks ago, and I'm very well satisfied with my purchase. I've used it in the cabinet shop I work at with great performance I was hoping for a zipper on the dust collector bag, but the plastic clamp they use works just as well. All.in all, a very good purchase that I would recommend.

Photos of the Makita model didn't look as sturdy or well built but the photos are deceiving. The sander arrived and was immediately put to use. First impression: Heavier, sturdier construction than I expected. Well balanced and comfortable to use. Easier than the Bosch to change belts. The front wheel moves further back out of the way than the Bosch, the retracting lever is easier to to manipulate and the alignment adjusting knob is much easier to turn and much more responsive to tiny variations in alignment. The platten on this tool was unbalanced and caused deep cuts on the left back of use. It also came used which is sellers fault not Makitas.
