Excellent tool, quality is top-notch. At maximum speed it is very quiet and smooth running. The compact size lends itself to operating in tight quarters. The Makita made, Jacobs style, three-jaw geared chuck is attached in such a way as to make the tool very compact. The advantage of the conventional chuck, as opposed to a keyless chuck, enhances the ability to operate in close quarters.

Does a really good job getting into tight places. Trigger sensitivity does take some getting used to, but you also have speed control to help fine tune. No brake either, another thing to be aware of, especially when using to drive screws, but a few test screws and good to go. Plenty of power for driving screws. Have used to sister floor joists (2 2x12's) with #10 GRK torx head screws and handles no problem. Have used with spade wood bits on double top plates for electrical wiring and works good. Low profile makes accessing the top plates at roof line much easier. Not a beast with the spade bits, but adequate power to get it done. Also tried speed bor type wood bits, and it's ok up to about 5/8 or so. Larger diameter than that and just not enough power. Might work in ... MoreDoes a really good job getting into tight places. Might work in open space where you can control drill a little better, but just doesn't work with the large speed bits in tight spaces. I tried 2 holes with a 7/8 bit through double top plates and drill runs out of gas between the two plates. Not saying this as a negative, just don't expect this little guy to perform like a hole hawg, they are two different animals. This seems to be a quality piece of equipment that will last a long time. Comes with nice side handle, chuck key, and a nice heavy, long power cord. Does not include case or bag. Would definitely buy this again.

I just finished my first job with this drill and it's perfect for what I was doing. The low profile is just the thing for fitting into the tight spaces I was dealing with during a hand rail install. I didn't have any of the issues other reviewers described with bumping the trigger while changing out drill bits...you just need to be careful if you're not going to unplug or dial the speed control back to zero. I like the full length switch because if you're stuck in a tight enough spot to require a right angle drill, it's likely to involve some awkward position that will make getting to a more conventional switch pretty difficult. I like that it's still made in Japan and the build quality is very high. I would definitely buy it again.

If you're looking for the absolute best 3/8 inch corded right angle drill ever, look no further. The drill has gobs of power, that are perfectly controlled with the smoothest power transfer of any drill I've ever owned. Not to mention it is two inches shorter than my Bosch 12 volt battery powered right angle drill with a hand Chuck. Granted these are completely different tools for different purposes, but this right angle drill should almost be on display in your Workshop. The Chuck has amazing grip on drill bits, which I use this drill with reverse cut drill bits for extracting bolts and rethreading holes. The motor power is phenomenal. The Chuck has amazing grip on drill bits, which I use this drill with reverse cut drill bits for extracting bolts and rethreading holes. The motor power is phenomenal. It is very well controlled does not jerk in your hand and has a throttle limiter on the trigger so you don't use too much throttle while you are trying to maintain a good grip on the drill. As you can see from the pictures, the space in which I drill is very limited. I wish this was the first right angle drill I purchased. It is far superior than the corded DeWalt that is also on the market. I do not have pictures of the DeWalt, sorry. For my purposes, having the power and smooth motor operation of the corded drill is excellent. The battery power, even the Milwalkee 12-volt is not well suited for this type of drill and tapping work. This drill has a mostly covered Chuck, which allows you to use your opposite hand to apply pressure from the back of the drill without chewing up your hand, or getting your glove stuck in the rotating Chuck. Also, not having a hand Chuck reduces the overall length of the drill to fit into smaller spaces, and also allows a firm grip on the drill bit which will never rotate in the chuck, like drill bits have a tendency to do in hand chucks. They thought of everything when making this right angle drill.
Not many corded right angle drills to choose from especially if you want the low profile. I first purchased the Dewalt for considerably less money. The trigger was extremely awkward, I sent it back and bought the Makita. The Makita is more sleek and much more ergonomic--you get what you pay for. I use it mainly when I build cabinets and want to drill mounting holes inside the drawer cavity through the cabinet top. Yes, I rarely remember to do it before I assemble the box and now I don't care. I can always find a use for this nice right angle drill. With the chuck tightened to a point the distance is 2 15/16 from the tip to the top of housing--not going to beat that.
Plenty of power. Fits in tight places. Easy to control, especially with the handle attached. The cord is unusually supple and doesn't stick in your face when doing overhead work. The 3/8 chuck is a little stiff. I wonder how long the chuck key holder will last, seeing as you have to yank the key out and shove it back in every time you use it. And, as others have mentioned, it's all too easy to accidentally depress the large trigger, but this seems to be a common issue with other brands as well, so it might be inescapable. And I can help but think it's a bit overpriced.
The drill seems to be very well built. It feels good in the hand, and the chuck is a quality chuck. I've had some drills where the chuck was pretty low quality. My complaint and the reason for my 2-star rating is the speed control. The speed control using the graduated trigger is too sensitive for me - its too over-rev the drill on startup, and its too easy to start to bog the drill down if you're drilling at a low speed. Then if you press the trigger further to compensate for the loading, you can over-correct. I've never had this much trouble with any of the other variable speed drills I've used. Also, the speed "limiter" dial on the trigger works poorly in my opinion. The dial limits how far the trigger can be depressed, which directly translates into how much ... MoreThe drill seems to be very well built. Also, the speed "limiter" dial on the trigger works poorly in my opinion. The dial limits how far the trigger can be depressed, which directly translates into how much voltage is applied across the motor. My complaint is that if you have no load on the drill, the drill will spin freely. However, once you put a load on the drill, the drill will slow down accordingly. If the speed limiter is engaged, you can't depress the trigger any more, so you can't get more speed, so you have to back off on your drilling or else you run the risk of overloading the drill and stopping it from rotating. the dial limiter would work better if it was RPM limited instead of voltage limited. Of course, that's not how the trigger is setup, so this would not be an easy change to make. My personal feelings are: if you're looking for a right angle drill, I can not recommend this drill. Instead, I recommend to look for another one - perhaps Milwaukee, Bosch, or Dewalt if these companies have comparable drills available (I haven't verified or investigated if these other companies have comparable drills available - I am mentioning these companies because I have used and purchased several of their tools in the past and have typically been pleased with them)
This Makita is just superb. It's really quite "thin" at the head, and there's plenty of power. That's 'cause it's got an electric cord. Kind of rare these days! Thing is, this is a drill I would/will rarely use; so having to run a power cord isn't going to have to happen that often. I've been an electrical contractor for 40 years, and managed without it (I do have a big ole Timber Wolf that's lasted for decades, but it ain't "petite"). But there comes a day....... Anyway, I've just been using it on a job where there's lots of close work; and it saved my bacon. Well, my temper, anyway. That said, there's room for improvement: The LED light is great. Makita should put in a timer, so that it stays on maybe another 10 seconds after you stop using it. Trust me, it's a ... MoreThis Makita is just superb. Makita should put in a timer, so that it stays on maybe another 10 seconds after you stop using it. Trust me, it's a good idea. I wouldn't mind them adding a little button that would turn it on, too; so that I could have the light BEFORE making it spin up. Also a good idea. The cord should be quick disconnect. Partly for storage, but mainly so that you can easily disconnect power while you're changing bits in the chuck. Why? Because it's VERY easy to accidentally turn this puppy on. If you're not careful. If it was easy to disconnect the cord, I'd do it every time I messed with the chuck. And, by the way, making this tool a couple inches longer so it can happen isn't going to ruin its ergonomics. Might even be better, with some extra leverage. I found I had to pay a LOT of attention to the trigger, so's not to have it run when I didn't want it. So I DID! But I do wish it was somehow designed so it was harder to accidentally turn it on. I survived, though. And, of course, there's a real incentive to "adapt" to the tool. I HAD thought, when I got it, that it should have a half inch chuck. Now, after using it awhile: Nope. 3/8 will handle things, and it's more petite. Which is the whole point. And, let's face it, this fella isn't going to spin an inch and a quarter auger bit. All that said, just remember, I gave it 5 stars because it really is a good tool. And I'd buy it again, just as is.
This is a very powerful drill for its size. I used it to help build a deck and it took a while to get used to it - I think more time will help as I have used standard type drills for so long. The trigger is a little touchier than I am used to which is my only complaint. It helped save time due to its speed and there were some jobs that only it could do because of space restrictions. I will use this a lot more even when space is not a consideration.
Hello, I'm very happy to see this Review request. I my shop I have eight different drills, all are used for many projects I do in my work shop. The most recent purchase of the MAKITA-DA3010F is a masterpiece of function and power that none of my other drills are with the job I'm using it for. I'm not saying it replaces the function of my other drills, except for one, but that it stands out as one of the best drills I've ever purchased. Thank you very much for making such a fine tool and I certainly hope it lasts as long as other tools I have. I take care of my tools and they all last a long time.
