I bought this for project work thinking it was silly to use a battery for sanding, but it works great and lasts a lot longer than expected using a 4-AH battery. It makes it easy to get hard to reach spaces or overhead areas without having a cord hanging down from you ladder. Great choice!

Super slick little unit. I've converted to mostly cordless tools for all but my chop and table saws, and I'm a total believer. I finally replaced an old plug-in Makita with this cordless version and I'm very happy with it. It runs for hours on a 4- or 5-amp battery. The 3 speed settings are very satisfactory and the little dust bag alone actually significantly cuts down on dust without needing to hook it up to a vac hose, thereby eliminating the benefits of a cordless tool. It is also quite comfortable to use for extended periods of time.

I already own several Makita LXT tools as well as a couple of 3.0 amp batteries. I didn't have a Random Orbital sander. Only a finishing sander which make marks and just doesn't work well. I built a shelving unit for my wife and had about 20 square feet of material to sand. I did not want to do it by hand. So, I got this. Honestly, I was worried that the batteries wouldn't last. My batteries lasted long enough that I could charge one while using the other and have plenty of time for the battery that is charging to get fully charged. For the entire unit with three sanding passes (rough, medium, fine), I only had to change batteries three times. I'm sure with a 5.0 amp battery it would be even better. Not totally lightweight with the battery, but light enough that when you are doing vertical pieces, you don't need to take a break.

I needed a second sander for a different location. Great performance. Having a cordless sander immediately at hand is a great connivence. I use it for light work and as such the battery life lasts as long as the immediate need requires. Those that want to connect a hose might look at Fein accessories. I use a Fein adapter with a Festool vac and collect nearly all the dust. Surprised to see the "Made in the United Kingdom" label although I've had good luck with Makita tools whatever the source.
I've been using finishing and random orbital sanders for 30+ years and they keep getting better. This one is no exception. The fact that you no longer have to tango with a cord makes it worth it. On most sanding jobs I'm constantly looking for more cord or trying not to drag it across my project and now I don't have to worry about that. However, with all of my sanders I've grown accustomed to being able to change my grip for fatigue and mostly tool angle management. With this one your choices are a little more limited due to the battery. Also it's a bit unwieldy because of the extra weight, but both draw backs are more than made up for by battery power. At full speed a 6ah battery will last around 40 minutes.
Im a Makita fan and I have several other 18v tools that work great. But this little sander just lacks oomph. It doesnt vibrate or rotate as well as my plug-in model. That means more time sanding. Cordless mobility is nice but the battery also makes it heavy, which works against mobility and ease of use. I have to admit that after using the Makita 18v for 30 minutes I got out my plug-in model to finish the job. It is more powerful and lighter. Its too bad. I really wanted to like this model and get rid of my corded one.
My corded Bosch ROS20 was my go to orbital sander until the dust catcher failed. Buying a new Bosch filter assembly for it is the only fix available. Due to the high cost of the Bosch filter, I tried to improvise with a flexible vacuum hose but it got to be too much of a hassle. I had my doubts about the effectiveness of the Makita sander but I bought it any way since I have a bunch of Makita 18v batteries for other tools. I am glad I did. I have used this Makita sander on all sorts of surfaces including on walls and ceilings. The dust bag is much easier to deal with the Bosch paper filter and box. I still have the Bosch sander and will continue to use it but the Makita XOB01Z is now my go to sander.
I like this sander for the convenience. It is great for cleaning up edges while you are cutting and assemblingyour project. It is easier to manage while using the sander with the vacuum and dust pick up is sufficient. All the safety switches take some time to get accustomed to.
I actually ordered this sander on Christmas Day since I had money to spend and wanted to invest in more Makita products. Since it arrived I’ve used it quite a bit on pine and poplar, as well as on some olivewood and flame birch. The first time I used it I ran it with a fully charged 3.0Ah battery (BL1830B) and sanded for a full hour on the highest speed, the battery still had a decent amount of life left in it. If you are going to be using this sander to sand a large surface or if you’re using it to batch out a large amount of products for Etsy where you’ll be progressing through different grits then you would be better served by a 5.0Ah or higher battery. I bought the 2.0Ah battery with every intention of it being the battery for the sander but I don’t believe that ... I bought the 2.0Ah battery with every intention of it being the battery for the sander but I don’t believe that it would be a large enough battery to get through my normal sanding applications. The smaller battery would be beneficial if you’re doing overhead sanding or in areas where you might not have the best access.I can’t truly speak about how well it’s dust collection is since I don’t own a dust collector but the supplied dust bag does catch a fair amount. Even if I had a dust collector I’m not sure I would use it with this sander, it would work and it would probably do a great job, but I bought this sander to be cordless so attaching a dust collection hose sort of defeats the purpose. I have found that because it’s cordless I’m doing more sanding outside, where I’m not actually as concerned about dust. I still wear a mask as well as eye and ear protection, but I can just blow off my work area if needed.
I bought this sander to replace an old Bosch corded sander that I could not get a dust cover for and absolutely love it. It is extremely powerful and lightweight. I use the 3.0Ah battery on it in my woodworking shop and the charge last the whole time that I use it. The only negative issue is the dust bag which could be a little bit better design but overall I highly recommend this product. The other thing I like about Makita is that you can register all your tools in your account so if you ever need to look something up it’s all there.

Makita XOB01Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5" Random Orbit Sander, Tool Only
The XOB01Z features three-speed settings, excellent ergonomics and up to 40 mins of run-time on a single-charge. Match the speed to the application with three-speed settings (7000/9500/11,000 rpm), which are easily changed with a one-touch electronic control switch. The large 1/8 in random orbit action is engineered for efficient sanding, fast material removal and a swirl-free finish. The pad brake reduces free-spin for improved overall finish and a control system regulates pad speed at start-up. The XOB01Z uses quick-change 5 in (eight-hole) hook and loop abrasive paper for increased versatility. It's part of Makita's expanding 18 V Lithium-Ion series, the world's largest cordless tool line-up powered by an 18 V Lithium-Ion slide-style battery. Makita 18 V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery-life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star protection is communication technology that allows the star protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18 V LXT and compact Lithium-Ion batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating star protection inside.
