Makita XPK01Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-1/4-Inch Planer
The Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion cordless planer (model XPK01Z, tool only) combines the speed and capacity of a corded planer with the convenience of cordless. The result is fast and accurate stock removal, without the cord. Itβs part of Makita's expanding 18V Lithium-Ion series, the worldβs largest cordless tool line-up powered by an 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style battery. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created STAR Protection computer controls. STAR Protection is communication technology that allows the star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18V LXT and compact Lithium-Ion batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating STAR Protection inside. The XPK01Z delivers 14,000 RPM and is engineered for fast stock removal. It will plane up to 3-1/4 in. wide and 5/64 in. deep in a single pass, with a 2-blade cutter head and double-edge carbide blades for added performance and a smooth finish. The click depth adjustment knob has an easy-to-read scale with settings from 0 In. to 5/64 in. for precise depth adjustment. In addition, the precision machined aluminum base is engineered for increased planning accuracy. Comfort and ease-of-use features include a spring-loaded stand to elevate the base and protect the blades and work piece. Weighing only 7.4 Lbs. (with battery, sold separately), the XPK01Z has a high power-to-weight ratio and has an ergonomically-centered balanced design, with rubberized soft grip on the front and rear handles for increased comfort on the job. The blade setting system is engineered for fast blade installation, with an electric brake for maximum productivity.

I have always found the cord on a portable planer a pain in the neck. this solves the problem. I do not find the added weight of the battery to be a problem I use this for commercial door and millwork installation. Once I removed the little spring thing on the sole it functioned perfectly. I went back and forth trying to decide if I should pay the extra $100. +/- for the new model I'm Glad I didn't. This one is great. My only huge gripe is it doesn't come with a fence. I refused to buy one so I made one. Some Kind of a chip collection bag would also be nice. Definitely works best with 5ah batteries. I don't really find runtime to be an issue because I have a lot of batteries 3ah an 5ah available

Only light use but seems great so far. Professional finish carpenter - my old Porter Cable planer is pretty bulky. Nice to lose the cord and shave weight too. Recommend using with 4- or 5-amp hour battery as it seems to run through my 3-A/hr batteries pretty quick. Setup out of the box is dead on. Would have bought a brushless version if available, but I've become pretty brand loyal to Makita & haven't been disappointed.

This planer works well and it is really nice to not have to fight with the cord on my old planer that always got in the way. If you are going to do much work with this planer it will help to have a good supply of batteries. I think I am getting about 15-20 minutes of use per charge with a 5 Ah battery. Some have complained about no case coming with this tool. I was replacing a old corded Makita planer and by cutting out just a tiny bit on the inside of it's case, this planer with a battery attached fit in perfectly.

Great product. I am slowly moving into Makita cordles. Great addition to my stash of tools. E-Bay also is a great platform.
I questioned if I should buy this cordless planer. I don't question it anymore. Geez, this thing has come in handy many times. The latest being to plane down the edges of cabinets to scribe against the wall before installing. So many more uses than I ever anticipated...
It doesn't weigh a ton, it has plenty of power, I've used it a bit, but not enough to, really, test the battery life yet. But if you're planeing something that big, you should probably grab its Corded cousin. I do have two minor complaints though. One, the indicator for the depth knob could be marked with a dab of White paint or such, instead of being body color, so that it is easier to see, took me a minute to realize that it was 180 degrees from where I thought it Was, (I set it to full depth, but it's not cutti....Oh, I guess that's Zero, OOPS!! Two, I could be just a little bit wider so that it takes the same blades as it's Corded predecessor, and would cover an entire face of a 4"x4" etc. Also, though not a necessity, a dust bag wouldn't be a bad Idea either.
For best results is to plane wood a little at a time. It does two things:1. Your end result will come out perfect.2. It will prolong the life of the tool.Remember when you plane used material check for nails or any metals. Once you gouge the blade then you need to replace the blades for best results.I have used power planers in my 42 years of carpentry work and the Makita cordless is by far the best of all the brands out there that make this similar tool.
Just another reason makita is my go to, affordable and great quality planer for the shop or on the go without a cord. I use this planer trimming sign faces when they come in slightly oversized as well as wood work in my shop and it always works wonderfully with good battery life even not being brushless. Only thing I wish it had was a way to change which side the chips exhaust to and a dust bag would be nice
Ive used this planer a handful of times now and am very impressed with the power. Considering that i was removing almost an 3/32β of wood the runtime seems fairly decent. I always thought a planer was a tool that needed a cord but once again makita knocks it out of the park and this thing beats other competitors brushless versions!
I do residential renovation & build built-ins, so I had a need for a battery operated planner that is easy to set up & use. I already have many cordless Makita tools, so this fit into my set up & reviews were favorable. I so enjoy using it, smooth operating, easy to adjust debt,, powerful enough. The downside is it weighs more than I prefer, probably because it is solidly built. Also it didn't come with a dust bag & edge guild, & CPO doesn't carry these, I had to order from Makita.I do recommend this tool for those that need a hand planner.
