Analogue sound in the digital age

At outset, I make no apology for being a teenager in the 1960’s.I was raised on vinyl and live music – my 1st concert in 1964 was to see an upcoming band called The Beatles.So I have always enjoyed a warm and accurate sound.This was reflected in my choice of QUAD amplification and Pro-Ac studio monitor speakers.When I committed to CDs I trialled lots of CD players and ended up choosing a Marantz CD6000 OSE K1 signature.20 years later it still works fine.Yes, Marantz does have a distinct musical signature and is probably not for those who prefer a brighter ‘digital’ sound.After burning in – best to run the units 24/7 for at least 2 weeks (I used internet radio for convenience) – they ‘opened-up’.I started to realise how much control these units have ... MoreAt outset, I make no apology for being a teenager in the 1960’s.I was raised on vinyl and live music – my 1st concert in 1964 was to see an upcoming band called The Beatles.So I have always enjoyed a warm and accurate sound.This was reflected in my choice of QUAD amplification and Pro-Ac studio monitor speakers.When I committed to CDs I trialled lots of CD players and ended up choosing a Marantz CD6000 OSE K1 signature.20 years later it still works fine.Yes, Marantz does have a distinct musical signature and is probably not for those who prefer a brighter ‘digital’ sound.After burning in – best to run the units 24/7 for at least 2 weeks (I used internet radio for convenience) – they ‘opened-up’.I started to realise how much control these units have over the full musical range.Not simply hearing things one hadn’t heard before – even after 50 years of listening to a particular song – but the sheer authority and sound stage.I listen to a very wide range of music (rock, jazz, classical, electronic) and I want to hear ‘everything’ without deafening the neighbours.Listening to music at home is about pleasure, not measuring technical parameters.The SACD is a versatile digital delight while the Model 30 amp is pure analogue.And it’s this combination which in my opinion works so well and is most likely what Marantz were aiming for.The grin on my face, and on other listeners to the system, is testament to what really good audio equipment paired with good sound sources can deliver.Closing ones eyes, as often as not the speakers ‘disappear’ leaving just the ‘image’ of a performance.When you go to play one song off a CD and end up listening to the lot, that’s a true sign of musical enjoyment.In summary:Both units are very well built and aesthetically both stylish and well laid out for ease of use.I have the black ones but the silver/gold units look great too.Paired together, they provide an extremely accurate yet warm sound – the ‘analogue’ of my musical upbringing.Avoid pairing them with warm sounding speakers.Throw away the standard power cables and invest in decent ones.Same applies to interconnect cables and of course speaker cables.With appropriate speakers, these units will show up the failings of poor quality recordings and really allow one to enjoy the joys of good quality recordings.Regardless, the addition of very usable tone controls allows one to compensate – the purist may be appalled but it’s about the music!The amp is very conservatively rated and will I’m sure drive any speaker to a level which will either blow the cones or ones eardrums.For the vinyl junkies out there, it also comes very well equipped on the phono side – I use CDs or streaming – but obviously use wireless or a LAN, not Bluetooth.They’re not cheap but at half the price of the Marantz top of the range units on which they’re heavily based, they’re good value.If you’re in the market for that ‘analogue’ sound and want a high quality 2 channel system, the Marantz should be on your listening list.Most of all, enjoy.And thanks Richer Sounds for all your help.

Fantastic sound

I bought the Marantz sa30n to replace my old Sugden Masterclass CD player . Sugden can no longer get the Philips mechanism and the replacements are unreliable. I was hoping that it would sound as good as my old player and was very surprised that it actually sounds better. The sound in my system is much fuller and more realistic. I go to a lot of classical music concerts and am always looking for a natural sound to the music at home.Whilst not all CDs sound better than before those that are well recorded can sound spectacularly better, so beware the sound quality of your CD collection will more uneven.I have not sorted out the internet radio or any of the other facilities yet . But would say on the strength of the CD player alone it is well worth the money.

Horribly complicated to set up

It took me a week to learn how to operate this unit satisfactorily; I was on the verge of sending it back thinking it was defective. The controls operation is not intuitive. The manual I downloaded was horribly inadequate, not descriptive enough. Luckily, I was able to get ahold of Marantz support by phone and get straightened out ..... THREE TIMES! (Kudos to the support personnel.) Once I got the hang of it, the operation was satisfactory.

Beautifully built, simple to use and exceptional sound quality. I was really surprised at how heavy this SACD and network audio player is. It feels more like a power amplifier.I upgraded from the Marantz ND8006 to this unit (SACD 30n). I've always been a fan of Marantz - and I wanted the capability of playing SACD's. I was very pleasantly surprised to notice that the DAC in this unit is far more advanced as well. I'm using this to stream Tidal HQ files and also as a DAC with my Roon Nucleus Plus (I use a Sonos Connect as the Roon endpoint and connect the Sonos to the SACD 30n via a digital coax cable).I'm very impressed with this new Marantz product. Marantz SACD 30n Networked SACD / CD Player Silver/Gold

I purchased the Marantz 30n for it’s DSD to analog converting capabilities for CDs and streaming sources in addition to SACDs. A feature not previously available at this price point. My ears have found it to be enjoyably smooth and natural sounding and it has opened up an entire range of available digital source material to my previously all vinyl playback system. I’m very happy with my purchase.

Marantz SACD 30n. Brilliant Sound, fantastic looks

Bought only a few days ago. Sounds Magnificent!

I have as a retirement present bought the Marantz 30n and 30amp on the recommendation of a friend. I am simply ‘gobsmacked’ at the sound of this equipment as I am hearing sounds on my SACD and CD collection I have not heard before. I only listen to classical music and I can throughly recommend this system. I have B&W speakers and Subwoofer to compliment the amp etc.

Totally Satisfied and More

Bought this to replace my 8-year-old Rega Apollo CD player and the outboard Rega DAC. Both seemed to sound tired. After about a month of daily use, the Marantz SACD 30n is an amazing component. Build quality is first-rate. Bought for the single play CD capability and also have my 1993 Marantz CC65SE Carousel CD player connected to the 30n's DAC via the carousel's digital out. Can spin shiny discs all day on random play or listen to a single disc. Both options result in clear, beautiful music. Someone said in another review that the experience with moving to the 30n is like getting a new pair of glasses. You saw things before but now you see things (hear things) more clearly. Amazing. The only nit to the 30n the remote control. It has serious heft to it and a quality feel, but you cannot easily read the tiny gold type against the black background and the buttons are recessed. If you're looking for a new CD player you will not regret this purchase.
