Love this game!! I've had plenty of Mario Kart game nights where a bunch of friends come over and battle it out. This game has been out for years and it's still as fun today as it was back then. They also finally came out with some dlc maps to be released over the course of the next few years. I also enjoy playing with family online who live in other states. The game itself will take some getting used to for new players. I recommend learning to drift right away. Perhaps the game should implement some tutorials for beginners. There are a few different modes to play to keep the game fun for all kinds of players. There's the grand prix starting from 50cc then 100, 150 and 200. If you're reading this, I highly advise you to buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (If you have a Nintendo Switch, that is). It's a beautifully made game with awesome features and thrills with every race you play, no matter what track. My friends and I love to have Mario Kart tournaments, which is a great way for us to bond. (I also found a hidden talent - I'm pretty good at this game!) This game still has the feel of the original Mario Kart with the added characters of other games that you can race with, which I wholeheartedly enjoy (my favorite character to race with is Link from the Legend of Zelda). Whether playing alone or with others, this game is for all ages, and will not fail to amuse, shock, and make its players laugh. I am a grandma who played the original Mario Kart with my children on the Wii. I bought this to play on the Switch with my grandsons. We have fun, but trying to figure out the settings to make it more competitive is kinda annoying. I liked that with the original Wii you just had to play until you got good. This one if you suck, it doesn't really matter it will do it for you so you dont come in last. I guess that's what kids need these days - trophies for everything so their precious egos don't get crushed. But this grandma enjoys a good victory dance in the living room so I am gonna have to figure out how to change the original settings. I gotta show my grandsons just how cool their grandma is!

Classic you can’t go wrong with
9 July 2021

A classic Nintendo game that you can’t really go wrong with. I’m not that into racing games and had only played Mario Kart on friends’ consoles so I was worried that I wasn’t going to play it much but I was wrong. I love to plop down on the couch with my switch lite and do a Grand Prix or two when I want to play a game but am not sure which one. My singular complaint is that I wish there were more characters, but I’ve found ones that I like so it’s not that big of a deal (there’s quite a few but most are unfamiliar to me because I haven’t played a wide variety of Nintendo games except for Pokémon and Zelda). There is a good selection of old and new tracks right out of the gate, and you unlock gear customizations by collections coins. There’s also a battle mode where you fight with the power ups in different themed arenas. My favorite is the time tests mode because you can just go around the track solo and try to beat your record. There are of course multiplayer options and amino stuff, but I haven’t tried those yet.

Great for young gamers!
18 June 2022

We've played this one a ton! I bought it for my son/family. He'd been playing a lot of apps in which characters are running by default and you just have to tap to jump or swipe to move. We tried a couple of side-scrolling console games but you need to be a bit more coordinated developmentally to move and jump at the same time. Racing games end up being a nice transition as you just have to hold the 'go' button and then steer. Not much to coordinate or time in general. Mario Kart though does have power ups and jumping/turning that do add this coordination piece, but given the different difficulty settings, we're able to have a lot of fun and success with this one!

Mario does it again with #8

Coming from the Nintendo Wii's Mario Kart 7, the game is graphically stunning, and there are a variety of new, exciting, and gorgeous tracks with plenty of shortcuts. There are some classic tracks as well as newer ones. There are many options to customize your vehicle (e.g., parachute, wheels). Vehicle customization affects the acceleration, weight, handling, traction, and speed of the vehicle. All of the characters come unlocked, but you can unlock vehicles, parachutes, and wheels by collecting coins throughout the game. Interestingly, there is 200cc, which speeds up the track, so breaking technique is involved. Gameplay: I immediately noticed that MK8D requires a lot of drifting, which is different from MK7 Wii, where drifting is optional. I found it to be more easy to get bumped off the track by heavier players. Unfortunately, some of the boost items (the golden mushroom and star) give you less speed than they used to. The benefit to the star in MK8D is its invincibility, which is a great advantage considering that players can hold up to two items. The green turtles are much more likely to hit you, are much faster, and can bounce off walls. Getting a coin in first place is often frustrating as it is not a defensive item; however, collecting coins increase your speed. Great game again from Nintendo.

Not like I remember MarioKart being, but still fun
24 January 2023

Maybe I haven't played it enough, but this Mario Kart doesn't appeal to me as much as the classics. Or maybe I'm just getting old. Don't get me wrong, it is good. But it just doesn't keep me coming back like it used to or expected it to. Since there are track packs you can get online and various updates that you couldn't get on many pervious versions, I expected to be glued to this game, but I'm not. It is worth buying. I do enjoy playing it and part of it might be that I'm getting older, because the younger crowd does seem to enjoy this game quite a lot. Every gamer has their preferences and priorities, and it seems I may have grown out of Mario Kart, but I would still recommend buying it to try and see if it is your jam. It is a well put together game and it is fun.

One of the best kart-racers ever

There's a reason why Mario Kart 8 keeps selling copy after copy after copy, somehow always popping up in the sales charts despite its age. That reason is Mario Kart 8 is stupidly good fun. Look, do you need me to explain what Mario Kart is? It's racing around tracks as a variety of classic Nintendo characters, from Mario to Donkey Kong, from Bowser to Link. If you like to have some sort of compelling singleplayer mode to push you along Mario Kart 8 isn't going to be for you. But if you like to just pick up the controller and have a few races it's perfect. Where the game is at its very best is with other people. Flaws? It has a couple. As mentioned, there's no career mode or anything like that. There's also some weird choices, like how you have to do at least four races. More importantly, though, where is Mario Kart 9, Nintendo? It has been 7-years!

Mario Kart 8 is basically Mario Kart Wii with prettier graphics and more tracks. Other than that, it did not evolve much. I really enjoyed the Wii game but this one was more of the same old or same old. I also am amazed that they still do not have a system whereby friends can play and communicate with each other like in Playstation 4 and 5. Part of the fun in multiplayer is in the communication. As it is, this game was underwhelming. Don't get me wrong. It is fun. For a while. Playstation has multiplayer done better and I find myself not playing this game much as there are so much more multiplayer games on Playstation (also require paid membership). The freakishly realistic graphics are mind-blowing and take some getting used to before you can appreciate their awesomeness, but the courses are so varied and delightful! It's not quite as chaotic as Double Dash (whether you find that good or bad is up to you). My favorite thing is that the courses AND the characters come from all over the Nintendo world, including LINK from The Legend of Zelda!!! It's weird at first, seeing different characters like that and the Inklings (from Splatoon) in Mario Kart, but then you put Link on that ancient bike and it gets really awesome really quickly! There are new weapons, you get to glide in some places, or even go under water, and the courses are so imaginative!
