Just got this - fits great (5'11'', 185lb, Sz L), and is made with attention to all the details. The photos here don't do this shell justice. Fabric is just the right weight and feel for a rain/wind shell. Heavy enough for mid-temp weather and not at all bulky to add layers underneath. Too bad these pics are just glamour shots and don't show the inside of the jacket: seams, zippers and pockets are magnificent pieces of craftsmanship. I AM IMPRESSED! Can't wait for some rain (for so many reasons here in CA, and now to wear my new Marmot shell, too). After so many other meh experiences shopping on-line, if you couldn't tell, this jacket has made me joyous! And, in my experience, Marmot stands behind their gear, which is also nice. I took this jacket on a weeklong vacation to the East Coast, where it rained every second day. It held up against the elements very well. I never had any issues with water getting in, and it worked great at stopping the cold wind.I have two other 3 layer GoreTex shell jackets which are much bulkier and heavier. The Minimalist jacket is much lighter and folds up much smaller to fit in a small daypack.I've only had the jacket for a few weeks, so I can't comment on longterm durability. The lighter material seems like it could be prone to damage on a serious backcountry camping trip.I am 6' tall and typically wear a Medium. Sometimes I find the zippers on the hand pockets a little difficult to close but it's only a minor issue. I did not use the pit zips on this trip, but they are a great feature which will probably be handy on future hiking & camping trips.

My first review of the Minimalist was 5 stars for fit and design, until I tested its waterproofness. I intended this legendary Marmot product to be my hard shell against rainy, outdoor activities. BUT, I tested my new jacket with a mild sprinkle from a garden hose and in less than 8 seconds, while most of the jacket beaded water off as expected, big wet splotches appeared on the shoulders and hood. That’s deeply concerning. How is it supposed to handle a real storm? Is this normal or was the DWR not evenly applied at the factory? Sad to say, despite really wanting to love it, I’ll have to return it.

Gave it a test run in recent heavy rainstorm: water mostly beaded off but started to wet out in the shoulders after 15 mins heavy exposure. Still waterproof - Goretex Paclite is still a good waterproof membrane, and at $106 on sale here at Sportsmans, so I'm happy enough with purchase. Was shipped Fedex to regional USPS, don't love that 2 step process, couldn't track package after handover. The good: Size M true to size chart, fits my lean 5'10, 160 lb frame well with just a t shirt - but also with room for a light fleece and light puffer midlayer underneath.Packs small rolled up - perfect for travel and just in case jacket in backpack on a hikeFace fabric is not at all crinkly, makes it more versatile day to day. The Arctic Blue is really nice, a bright navy in real life. The bad:If (like me) you have looked at all available video reviews, this version is totally inferior to the older ones: main zipper is much less substantial, chest pocket zipper is no longer a waterproof one, the phone pocket is therefore not waterproof. There is only one hood adjustment (at the back cinch) - no front hood adjustments like on the older versions, also no velcro side flaps for the hand pockets, only a hem cinch on one side, no longer on both sidesAlso, inexplicably, on the one I received: the chest pocket is on the right side, so phone etc is accessed with the left hand. I'm left handed and still find this weird.I have the 2020 Minimalist pants. They use same gore tex paclite - but a much more bombproof exterior fabric, and have waterproof zippers - I trust them completely in a sustained downpour. Was hoping the jacket would match. But it doesn't.
GREAT MATERIALSI can confirm the jacket performs well in intense wind and rain. While you may feel buffeted by the wind, the Gore-Tex material prevents you from the chill you feel. Similarly with the rain, it hasn't soaked through on me. The pit zips are great at venting. Despite the breathability rating, on a moderate bike ride with the pit zips open, there was quite a lot of build up of perspiration on the inside of the back area. The front however was dry.STRANGE "OPPOSITE" FEATURESFor a men's jacket the chest pocket and zipper are reversed and feel strange. Especially when layering, zipping this outer layer after having zipped up a vest or other jacket (i.e. zipper pull on the left), there's a moment of confusion when the zipper pull is on the right; same ... MoreGREAT MATERIALSI can confirm the jacket performs well in intense wind and rain. The front however was dry.STRANGE "OPPOSITE" FEATURESFor a men's jacket the chest pocket and zipper are reversed and feel strange. Especially when layering, zipping this outer layer after having zipped up a vest or other jacket (i.e. zipper pull on the left), there's a moment of confusion when the zipper pull is on the right; same goes for zipping it down—you're expecting to hold the zipper pull and remove the other end with your right, but all you end up doing is just pulling the jacket.CHEST POCKETThe chest pocket is again something to get used to with it being on the right hand side as opposed to the left where the majority of chest pockets are. The pocket is unusually deep. Not necessarily an issue (I'd prefer the pocket bigger than not). Yet the zip/opening doesn't go all the way. This is potentially intentional so as to prevent things from falling out. However, when trying to get objects like a phone, pen etc out of the pocket, you butt up against the zip/smaller opening, rather than being able to be removed with ease.GOOD MOBILITY, BUT SHORT JACKET LENGTHWhile I usually buy/wear small in items closer to my body, I opted for a medium as the outer layer, so I could appropriately move if I have multiple layers on. The 'angel wing' gussets on this jacket are great and allow unconstricted movement. However, the length over the jacket is a good 2-3 inches shorter than any other regular/run-of-the-mill jacket that I own. It may not be a deal breaker for others, but I wish there were jacket length measurements online that I could refer to. I may not have bought it knowing the opposite zip, opposite pocket and overall length.
This is my second Marmont product -- disappointed in both. Marmont "lifetime" gaurantee kind of explains how long you will be on the phone trying to work out a solution. The most recent purchase is this blue jacket. Ok for short periods in a light rain, but no bueno in a heavy rain. It is possible this product is not intended for heavy rain use, if so, my bad for not reading the product description more carefully.Light weight and easily packable, it could benefit from speed velcro closures on the front wind flap and side pocket flaps. I like the chest pocket mucho. Overall rating -- meh. It helped that when I bought it, it was on sale.
I was chasing a Gore-Tex jacket after an older jacket lost its water repellence, and I could not chemically restore it. This is a very lightweight jacket, it folds away very nicely in the hood for storage, and tucks away in the hood of my pack so I forget it's there. The cut is very simple with no excess materials or mesh lining. I was on the larger size of the Small per the fit guide and purchased online, so went with a medium, but I probably should have gone the small size as the arms come down over my wrist even when the cuffs are folded over, and it hangs a little loosely. I'll have no issues getting it over bulky winter clothes and I'm confident I'll be well protected from the weather despite only having used in in light rain so far.The hood has three ... MoreI was chasing a Gore-Tex jacket after an older jacket lost its water repellence, and I could not chemically restore it. I can get it to lock down tight around my head with just my eyes and nose exposed, with a decent brim overhead. I feel confident it will work well in a tropical Queensland rainstorm.
I've worn this jacket on a lot of adventures. From multi-day rain storms in the High Uintah Wilderness Area, to Florida tropical storms, this jacket comes with me whenever I need some quick protection from the weather. It has not disappointed me in wet conditions. GoreTex just works. The hood has a great fit because of the adjustable draw cord, and pockets are well placed. It can feel pretty hot inside when the temperature and humidity are high, but maybe I need to experiment a little with the pit zip ventilation more. And IMHO this is a good looking jacket. I am 6' 2" 190 lbs and the LARGE fits great.
I am 5' 10' and weight 175 lbs with a 32" waist with a 31" inseam. I wear a large in most t-shirts and hoodies (my drier makes everything a medium/large) and I bounce between a large and a medium in jackets depending on cut and purpose. I ordered this jacket in a medium. The sleeve length and fit was perfect except is was just a little too short. I compared it side by side with the Patagonia Torrentshell in the same size and the Patagonia was about an 1.25" longer in the front and about 3" longer in the back. If I bent over the Marmot would easily expose my belt line. The fabric is nice and I am sure it is plenty capable when taken care properly but it did not feel as durable as the Patagonia. The zipper on the Marmot is much smaller than the Patagonia. The hood on the Marmot fits better without adjustment but has less adjustment with only one toggle on the back that tightens the crown and opening at the same time. The Patagonia has one toggle on the back and a draw string on both sides of the hood. I am sure the Marmot is a fine jacket but the main issue for me was the length. It IS as short as it looks on the model photos found everywhere online. I was worried about length when I ordered it but I got it on sale and will always lean towards a Gore-Tex product when I have choice. I did however end up returning it and buying the Patagonia Torrentshell. If you are closer to 5'7-5'8 and between 155-175 or have an abnormally short torso this jacket would work for you. If I had gone to a large I would have swam in it. The medium did give me enough room to layer and use as 4-season shell but all the base layers I tried were longer that this jacket. That is not ideal when trying to stay dry.
I really wanted to love this jacket - the Minimalist was going to be my durable, storm proof shell layer for outdoor activities. BUT, I was extremely disappointed and shocked when, on its first encounter with water - a light sprinkling with a garden hose for less than 10 seconds, the face fabric failed miserably. While most of the fabric repelled the droplets as expected, water seeped in immediately along the shoulders and hood. Is this normal for a brand new, DWR-coated, GoreTex fabric or is my jacket an unfortunate lemon? I spent quite some time researching this jacket and I felt I found the perfect value-optimized rain shell but I am not confident it will hold up in rainy weather.
