A Good Multi-Purpose Tire

Their reliability is good, even in rocky terrain, and in goathead country I never rolled over anything that Orange Seal couldn't fix with these tires, but I cannot yet speak to their longevity as I haven't ridden more than a couple hundred miles on them. They handle mild mud and wet grass only as well as your skills do, but they are no match for Owyhee peanut butter mud (nothing is). These tires would complement some slicks pretty well if you're the type to switch tires for different uses, but I wouldn't go for much more tread on a gravel bike. You know I like the Maxxis Rambler tires because I rambled about them ;)

Great All-round Gravel Tire

I've been riding the Maxxis Ramblers for several years now, first in the 40mm version and now 45mm. They are a smooth-rolling and fast tire that works great on all types of gravel (I've never really ridden them in mud, so I can't comment there). The key is to get the pressures down. I weight about 160# fully-kitted out, running 26/28 psi, and with a Red-shift suspension stem and PNB Coast suspension/dropper post have a very manageable ride on all the very rough gravel roads we have here in west-central Idaho. They work well on single-track as well. Only downside is tread life. I ride a lot (10-12 hrs/wk) and typically only get a season out of a set.

The sidewall is marked 40 psi, but I currently have them pumped up to 50 psi like stated in the tire spec shown on this webpage. At 50 psi, these tires feel speedy and my bike leans into turns more quickly. My 36 lb. cruiser/hybrid feels lighter and faster as a result. I'm sure I could lower the pressure to 35 psi to get a softer ride, and I may do so at some point in the future, but 50 psi feels perfect for what I want to ... MoreI have an old 7-speed cruiser bike that I converted to a hybrid/comfort bike years ago. It's a good thing I really don't intend to ride in wet grass or mud. Lol.

Great gravel tire
23 May 2023

Ran 650b x 47mm on a 200km bikepack this past weekend, over mix of pavement, loose gravel, grass, light mud. Tires handle very well, good grip and comfort, decent rolling resistance. Set up tubeless and running 32-36psi, no leaks or sealant weeping. Bought a second set in 700c x 38mm for my second set of wheels. Very happy with these tires compared with the Panaracer Gravelkings which leak constantly.

As stated I love these tires, the set up, the tread pattern, the durability of the casing and overall performance are exceptional! But I just wish they lasted longer for the type of riding that i do. Additionally it would be fantastic if there was a taller knobs offering in this tread pattern. I'm located in Northern California and the trails we ride are not traditional gravel for the most part it is technical single tack and some fire roads. I believe the taller knobs would assist with some of our crazy steep and loose climb's and also improve the lifespan of the tire. (currently only getting about 3-400 miles on the rear, and about double that for the front). They are they are my go to tire and will continue to be for the forseable future. Love how they ride
6 December 2021

Between my wife and I, we've ridden four sets of the 700x40c 120 TPI EXO Ramblers. We love the traction they provide on lose gravel, while also being light weight, long wearing and fast rolling. My only complaint is that every tire has had leaky sidewalls, when run tubeless. Eventually I've been able to get them to hold air well enough, by adding sealant and letting them sit on each side for a time. I've had to switch to a tire that holds air better for endurance rides like the 240 mile Day Across Minnesota. Also, I'd love a Tan Wall option in a 120TPI 700X40C EXO. Do that and fix the leak and you'd have a perfect gravel tire for just about anything!

Maxxis Rambler Gravel Tires - Best I've Found
15 June 2020

I've been running these on my gravel bike (2018 Norco Search carbon) after trying several other brands and models. Nothing beats these for me. I weigh 145 pounds and run the 38mm width, which measures around 35mm when inflated. These tires get me up loose, steep rocky jeep-roads without spinning out and I've only gotten two flats in two years on them - and I ride across a lot of sharp rocks in the Arizona desert and mountains. They come in wider versions, but I stick with the 38mm because I don't have a traction problem and they are light (lighter than most other brands in the same size, BTW). These tires roll pretty well on pavement, too, which is important to me because most of my gravel rides include some pavement sections. I use Stan's sealant and carry a Stan's Dart plug kit. Maxxis has no problem with Stan's sealant, but other tires (Continental and WTB, for example) do not like Stan's sealant and, therefore, are not compatible with the Stan's Dart.

I bought 3 of these tires. 2 from backcountry and 1 from another vendor at the same time. Of the 3 tires, 2 had weeping sidewalls when setup for tubeless (Stan's standard sealant). Maxxis replaced both under warranty and now I have 2 good tires installed. One is an original that I purchased, the other is a warranty replacement. The second replacement tire sits waiting as a backup and I'm optimistically assuming it won't have problems as it came direct from Maxxis warranty. After 4 months of riding I have had no further quality issues with the 2 tires I've used. On pavement they run smooth and relatively quiet. Cornering is quite good. I don't feel like I'm dragging an anchor which is the feeling I've had with some cyclocross and "gravel" tires on the road.On dirt (typically loose over hardpack) they run true without much drift or squirrelliness on straightaways. Cornering is another matter. On hardpacked flat corners the tires drift somewhat predictably. On descents, corners are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get. They might dig in and carve. They might break loose and put you off the trail. Totally unpredictable.I like the sizing and weight. The 45's have great air volume and are pleasingly light despite having reinforced SilkShield sidewalls.

Repeat purchase, great tire!
27 July 2022

So far so good with these tires. I used them a while back, and needed some new tires to replace my Panaracer that had worn out. Bought the 40mm, and needed my compressor to mount the first tire, and was able to mount the 2nd with a floor pump. Not certain if that was due to tire / wheel tolerance variance or operator error.I just measured them on the wheels, and they ballooned to 43mm. No issues with my frame, just awareness.Smooth riding, grippy, and confidence inspiring for long days in the saddle.
