A great portable pump option

I really enjoyed testing the Medela Swing Maxi with Hands Free Collection Cups. I am a first time mom so the entire breastfeeding journey was pretty overwhelming to start, as I am sure it is for most people. I tried to do all of the research prior to giving birth on the “best” pump to get. I got a wall pump through insurance, and while I really love it, I didn’t get one with a battery pack and it has to be plugged in at all time. I thought the suction was pretty good and customizable. Less powerful than my wall pump but more than in bra portables and I got a good output. It doesn’t have a display, but the Medela app is really easy to use and solves that problem by tracking how long you’ve been pumping, and even has a Lock Screen widget so you can simply unsee your phone to see how long you’ve been pumping. This is in addition to providing you with ways to track output and other stats within the app.As far as portability, I felt this gave me a lot of flexibility to pump on the go, get a good output, or even just around the house so I wasn’t tied to the couch/a chair. The motor is a decent size, probably because of the pumping power it can provide, but that does mean it isn’t easy to conceal unless you’re wearing baggy clothing. But, i also don’t think this is a pump you’d buy to use with the intent of wearing it in public, so I don’t think that matters too much. It came with a built in small loop, but I felt to truly make it efficiently portable it needed a clip on the back or a better way to hook it onto your clothing. I tucked it into the waistband of my leggings most times, but it would have been nice to have a more secure way to take it around while pumping. It wasn’t too loud when tucked into my pants, but if it was sitting on a surface it wasn’t the quietest. The personal collection cups are a must. Those are what make this stand out from others as a great portable pump. I will say where the tubing connects into the cups needs a redesign. I always felt they weren’t properly inserted because the plastic piece at the end of the tubing that sticks into the cup is flat but where it inserts is rounded. I feel that would be a small fix that would make it easier to insert and secure the tubing.Cleaning was really easy, only 3 parts, which was nice compared to my other portables which had 5-6 pieces. It did take some practice to efficiently put it back together as the piece that snaps the back and front together needed to be lined up well in order to fully seal. But once learning that about the cups it didn’t take long to get used to.Overall, I’d say if you’re looking for a higher powered portable pump I’d recommend the Medela Swing Maxi with Hands Free Collection Cups and am thankful I was given it to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel.

Almost perfect wearable

My lactation consultant recommended a plug-in version and while I do love the one I have, I really don't have the time anymore to sit connected to a wall. The Medela Swing Maxi performs nearly as well as my plug-in pump, but it is so much more convenient. It is intuitive to use and in comparison to my other wearable, it is leaps and bounds better. In fact, I no longer use my other wearable at all -- it didn't remove as much milk, had too many parts to clean, and was really awkward to wear. The Swing Maxi has a nice shape that easily fits into any sports bra as well as my pumping bras/shirts. I recently took it on my first trip without the baby and I was truly shocked at how much milk it removed throughout the day. It is small and convenient to pack. It charges quickly and the charge will last through the day even if you are exclusively pumping. Best of all, the collection cups only have 3 parts each side to clean. My other wearable has double and it was so discouraging to use. The other thing I love about the Medela Maxi is that it comes with practical flange sizes. I use a 21mm (sized by my lactation consultant) and this already comes in the box so you don't have to buy additional flanges. While I loved this product gifted to me to by the Stellar Product Testing Panel, I do think it could use a few improvements. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't show any stats or time on the actual pump. If you want to know what level setting you're on or how long you've been pumping, you have to connect the Medela Family app or time it yourself. It does auto shut off sometimes, but I don't usually pump for an entire 30 minutes. The app was really finicky; it didn't always connect easily to the bluetooth on the pump, the year was often wrong (in the 1970s), and it crashed every now and then. Since I don't use an app for any of my other pumps, this was not a feature I cared much about, however I did want the information about my suction strength settings and pump times, so I felt obligated to use it.My only other concern is that the pump can be a little awkward to use at times since you have to hold the motor and keep it attached/close to your body. Usually I would set it on the counter next to me if I was doing dishes or a chore, or I would put it in my pocket if I was on the move. It is small and that was never terribly difficult to do, however the cords do make it a little challenging to use in public even though the cups are easy to hide, so if you're looking for something super discreet, this may not be it. I did hear there is now something to help hold the motor to make that issue more manageable.I definitely will keep using the Medela Swing Maxi with the Hands Free Collection Cups and would absolutely recommend this as a wearable pump option. I hope Medela works on their app and in a future version adds the timer/pump strength to the actual motor to make those stats more visable.

Other pumps I have small attachments or pieces that sometimes get lost in the shuffle. I like that it is easy to keep track of all pieces in this pump and nothing is falling through the cracks of my drying rack or getting lost.I’ve used this pump to pump around the house, in my car running errands, and on walks. I had to be very mindful of the opening at the top of the pump (after my 2nd or 3rd time bending over to pick something up while pumping I learned that I cannot do that or else milk goes everywhere). That opening at the top does limit some of the flexibility because I don’t really feel like I can wear it while I’m playing with my baby on the floor. Additionally, the cups are not a discrete shape so I don’t feel as comfortable using it at work since I work in a shared office setting and I don’t really have a good place to pump on my own. I do really like the design of the pump itself, and that all the buttons are larger, and the interface is very easy to use quickly, however, not coming with an attachment or clip does make it a little difficult to be on the move with this pump.My all-time favorite feature of this pump is that you are able to pump while the pump is charging. I know that’s counterintuitive to the whole hands-free portable pump model however, when you have three minutes left on a pump session and you really want to finish out a full pump and suddenly the battery dies it’s a pain to either have to cut the pump duration short or wait for it to charge up and then try to restart a fractured pump. Being able to plug it into the charger and finish out those last couple of minutes has been a lifesaver on at least a dozen occasions.

These cups made everything so much more simple.- The comfort of the cups and how they feel is next to none. I had another similar style free hand collection cup and as soon as I fit the medella cups to my breast, I could feel the difference in shape and the comfort level.- I had another similar version that is supposed to be hands free to get stuff done with but it was not a cup version but rather the regular bottle style. They made me feel so clumsy and got in the way of everything and inevitably I would always knock one or both off of suction. The collection cup design without compromising the suction strength with the swing maxi is a total game changer as it was so easy to move around with them!I was nearing the end of my journey with pumping as I got these to try so the milk output was about the same/a little better than with the previous pump I had been using but I did not see a dramatic increase only because I was not as full as I had been in the beginning of my journey. Because I had the others to compare, it was still an easy win in my book without a doubt. I can't wait to have my next baby and be able to use the medulla swing maxi with hands free collection cups right from the start when I have the most milk flow!

Great Portable Pump for Multitasking Moms
22 July 2024

The Medela Swing Maxi pump with the Hands- Free collection cups surprised me by its performance, yet small size. Some of my favorite features include its easy to clean pump parts, its synchronized collection cups, and its small size that makes it easy to bring on the go. As a busy mom of three, it has been very helpful to have a portable pump that I can use while I'm doing things around the house. This pump motor is very simple to use. It features a power button, an expression button, and two increase/decrease buttons. It comes with tubing the connects directly to both collection cups. The collection cups each contain three components, which are easy to put together once you make sure it is properly lined up. At first I had trouble making sure I got good suction, but I quickly realized that I hadn't locked the collection cups completely closed. Once you try it more than a few times, it should be easy to use.The collection cups have a tubing adapter that attaches to the original tubing, and those pieces connect to the top of each collection cup. You have to apply pressure to click on the tubing to the top. I found these were straightforward and simple, and I appreciate that there are few pieces to keep track of. I have been able to collect a good amount of milk each pumping session. I still nurse my baby too, so I've mainly used these to replace a feeding or keep up my supply up by pumping for five minutes at a time. I haven't had any need to pull out my plug in wall pump, because the ease of wearing these right in my bra free me up to be able to do more simultaneously. There are a few things I don't love about this pump. The main thing I dislike is that it automatically switches from stimulation phase to expression phase after just one minute. I like that it starts with the stimulation phase, and you can increase the pressure as much as you want. However, I find I almost always need more time to stimulate before my milk lets down. I often have had to play around with the buttons to get it back to stimulation phase before it goes to expression. There is an expression button, so you can go directly to the expression phrase if wanted, just not the other way around. Another thing I don't love about this pump is the lack of a screen to be able to see how many minutes you've been pumping for. Most pumps include this directly on the pump motor. Another small dislike is the discomfort of the collection cups. I find if I'm increasing my expression level, it can leave me more uncomfortable afterwards, as the plastic is not as comfortable as some silicone pump inserts on the market. The last thing I don't love is that you have to set the motor on a surface or clip it to your belt loop. I find if I'm wearing pocket-less pants, I end up carrying the pump in one hand until I am standing at the counter working on something or sitting down reading. This is a small inconvenience, though, and most of the time the minutes spared override the inconvenience of carrying it. I will say it is not at all heavy and can be easily carried in one hand while still doing other tasks. This pump can be used on just one side, but you have to plug the other side of the tubing to keep the pressure up. I'd love to see a connecting piece on the tubing to allow for this, as sometimes it is helpful to pump on only one side. Another thing to note is that you have to be careful when emptying milk, as the collection cups click together and require some care to not spill once opening them to pour into a bottle.I love that I can wash the mere three collection cup pieces on the top rack of the dishwasher or easily hand wash them. They dry quickly (20 minutes air dried) and can be therefore used many times throughout the day. I also love that the pump is synchronized so I don't have to experience the discomfort or noise of them expressing milk at different times. It is generally a quiet pump, especially on lower settings. Overall, this has been a great help while I'm cooking, reading, getting snacks for toddlers, or doing other chores around the house. It makes a huge difference in pumping when I'm not stuck to the wall plug while pumping. I can't foresee going back to my plug in wall pump now that I have this small but powerful hands free option. One quick note, I didn't realize until a day ago that there is a Bluetooth feature on the swing maxi that will allow you to track minutes pumped on the Medela family app. It says it will keep records of thirty days of pumping at a time. In a follow up to this review, I will add my thoughts on this process specifically. I had previously just resorted to pulling up my stopwatch on my phone with the click of a button and that felt easiest to me.Overall, this Hands- Free pump has been a great option for pumping and keeping up my milk supply. Thank you to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this pump!

Makes Pumping Convenient
20 July 2024

Overall this pump is alright. Like if you have a very busy, packed day and find it hard to take the time to stop and pump, this pump will definitely help you take that stress away. With the hands free collection cups, you can pump anytime, and anywhere pretty discreetly! The swing maxi did help me produce a very good amount of milk during each pump. I wouldn’t say I was able to pump “more” milk than with my previous pump, but I was able to pump around the same amount & not any less. Using this pump was very simple and self explanatory. There wasn’t any confusing steps to work it. I was able to figure it out basically just by opening the box and seeing the parts to it. To clean it was also very easy as it doesn’t have a ton of pieces which I really liked. My previous ... MoreOverall this pump is alright. There wasn’t any confusing steps to work it. I was able to figure it out basically just by opening the box and seeing the parts to it. To clean it was also very easy as it doesn’t have a ton of pieces which I really liked. My previous pump had 2 more pieces to each side of the pump making cleaning it a task. So I enjoyed cleaning this pump a lot more! I’ve used the swing maxi see pro to pump during car rides, at work, while cleaning, and while relaxing! I have a nursing bra that made wearing the hands-free collection cups a breeze!! It’s very flexible and the suction is outstanding and I wasn’t ever feeling like if I moved the pump would come un-done while cleaning or moving around and wearing it. One of the cons of the swing maxi pro is that it doesn’t have the electrical control panel like most of the newer pumps do. It just has the few buttons to control the suction during pumping. However it is compatible with an app that allows you to see how long you’ve been pumping, the battery percentage & current suction strength. I also really love how to app keeps log on your past pumping sessions automatically logging the length of the session, and the time and date. You’re also able to manually add the amount you pumped to the logs. I love the design of the hands free collection cups as they are small and compact and fit very easily into my nursing bra. One thing I didn’t really like about this pump though is that since there isn’t any backlit control panel you use to change the setting of the pump, you can’t see what level you’re currently pumping at without using the Medela app. And just to give you a heads up, the pump does make a little noise it’s not super quiet. So overall if you’re a busy momma and need a flexible pump that has great suction strengths allowing you to wear it while you’re active, this pump is great! And super easy to clean as it has less pieces than most current pumps on the market! I’m thankful that Stellar Product Testing Panel chose me to use the Medela Swing Maxi Pro with Hands-Free Collection Cups and provide my honest feedback in this review because now I’ve got the perfect pump for my busy & active days!

Powerful Portable Pump
19 July 2024

The Swing Maxi pump and collection cups provide a powerful and comfortable hands-free pumping experience. The swing-maxi is my primary pump on days that I am in the office due to the portability coupled with superior milk output. The hands-free collection cups allow me to discreetly pump while in my office without worrying about full privacy associated with traditional flanges. They also fit in any standard bra, making outfit planning easier. Additionally, the small size of the swing maxi is easy to transport and store without sacrificing on suction strength or milk output. I also took this pump on a two-day road trip with me because the pump was easy to pack, and the collection cups allowed for discreet pumping while riding in the car.I rate the pump four out of five stars for two primary reasons. First, while the suction and power are impressive, the pump's size makes it less suitable for true mobile use, as I found it necessary to be stationary during pumping. Secondly, although the pump is user-friendly, it lacks a display, relying on an indicator light and the accompanying app for additional data such as suction strength level and time. It’s also worth mentioning that the pump is only moderately quiet. My favorite features of the pump are the portability, the suction strength, and the comfortable pumping experience. It is an excellent choice for anyone who needs portability but does not want to sacrifice suction strength or milk output. My favorite feature of the hands-free collection cups is that they are truly innovative in their design which allows for minimal parts to clean and assemble. They are my absolute favorite collection cups out of the many I’ve tried. The Swing Maxi and hands-free collection cups provide an optimal pumping experience, rivaling or even outshining the performance of full-sized competitors. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this pump and collection cups to test and review.

Pumping For the busy Mama
20 July 2024

As a mom of 3 under 2, a hands-free pump is truly non-negotiable! The Medela swing maxi with hands free collection cups definitely passed the test for me! I was given this pump as a part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel. My top favorite thing about this pump is that is has MINIMAL parts! As someone who has tried multiple wearable pumps with what feels like 50 small parts to take apart and wash (over and over again each pump session), the simplicity of assembling & disassembling these cups is better by a landslide! Another thing I have to mention is that while the cups dont seem all that big, they fit my large chest comfortably with no leakage -- another difficult feature to find for us larger chested women! Another thing I have to mention is that while the cups dont seem all that big, they fit my large chest comfortably with no leakage -- another difficult feature to find for us larger chested women! Plus, they fit perfectly into my bra and they don't bulge out awkwardly like some others do!In addition to its sleek design and ease of assembly and washing, I felt like these emptied me in a pretty timely manner. A huge plus when you don't have all day to sit on a couch and pump! I wore these in the car, around the house, and even at work once I was back from leave and they are totally inconspicuous and SOO quiet which I love!!Now for the cons (which wouldn't necessarilydeter me from purchasing - just some things I didn't love and would consider!) -- the pump itself is a nice minimal design with only a few buttons. It has a little hanger on it but unless you have pockets or attach a lanyard or something, you're stuck carrying it around which kind of takes away from the whole "hands free" idea. If I had something to wear or hang it on, that would have made a huge difference. My other issue is that it doesn't have any sort of way to monitor how long you've been pumping, and as a new mom with serious mom brain - i hardly EVER remembered to look at the clock before I started pumping, which was annoying when I didn't want to wait for the 30 minute auto-shut off but also didn't want to cheat my body out of stimulating milk production. All in all I would say this is an EXCELLENT option if you're going the hands-free, wearable route! Just make sure you have large pockets or a lanyard of some sort to help hold the pump!

Review for my Reliable and Mostly Hands Free Pump
20 July 2024

I consider myself a seasoned breastfeeding mom. I’ve tried a variety of pumps over the past year and have been rather picky about my regular line up. I was given the breast pump to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel and it actually became one in my regular line up.I found, most importantly, that the Medela Hands-Free Breast Pump did yield as much milk as my other pump. This was obviously critical to our family. I also appreciated the simplified design in the amount of parts when it comes to the process of cleaning. There are three parts to clean easily - nothing small to lose like my other pump. I also loved that there were varieties in sizes that came with the kit so I could test which was right. In terms of usability, I found the pump to be fairly ... MoreI consider myself a seasoned breastfeeding mom. I also loved that there were varieties in sizes that came with the kit so I could test which was right. In terms of usability, I found the pump to be fairly intuitive. Once I got the hang of it, slipping it into a nursing bra was easy and as long as I had a pocket to hold the hub it was hands-free and easy to use.A few cons to the pump were that the materials of the pump themselves felt slightly lower in quality than my other pump. I also found it very hard to disassemble when cleaning, I had to have my husband open it nearly every time I needed to open and clean it.My biggest issues with the pump were the heaviness and noise of the hub. I often found myself needing to hold the hub either in a large pocket when I had one or placing it on a counter if I was doing dishes, getting ready for bed, etc.Overall, the Medela pump has earned a spot among my primary pumps with the ability to be mostly hands-free and get the output that we need. It is convenient for me as a busy mama. It is a great choice for any other moms looking for something flexible, price-friendly and easy to use.

The more I use it the more I like it
20 July 2024

When I first received and started using this pump, I had already tried at least 8 different pumps after having had 3 kids over 7 years. My first impression of the pump was I was pleasantly surprised by the output it generated. In general, I am not able to produce as much with portable battery operated pumps, but this one allowed me to produce about the same amount as a wired pump. The feel of the suction is not the most comfortable, but it's not painful. I was able to find a combination of suction strength and frequency that worked best for me.I thought initially that it was a little difficult to snap open and shut the collection cups and to click the tubing on over the cups. However, it was just the first few uses that it was stiffer, and I got the hang of the mechanics after some time. I really love the way the company designed the inner membrane of the collection cups and how they attach. It feels very secure and is easy to hook and snap on, compared to a different hands free pump that I have. I still sometimes have problems with spilling a bit of the milk when I'm handling the cups, so I was wondering if there is a better design for the cups so it doesn't tip over easily, especially while it's still connected to the tubing before it's disconnected. The buttons are soft and user friendly. I wish there was a bit of lighting behind each button for when it's dim/dark. I wasn't super fond of the round design of the pump. I thought it wasn't the most space efficient shape to store nor find a place to put it when I'm on the go and pumping. However, it's small enough to be able to take around in a little pouch, so I do appreciate that.I received this product as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel.
