I did not enjoy this due to the English difficulty. Read this version if you're fluent in English. Otherwise, get the American translated version instead. I enjoyed that one better.

Emperor Marcus Aurelius at his best slugging it out on the Rhine frontier against the chaos of the barbarian hoards. Had to talk it all out on paper and give us a guide to what we all face in what we call civilized living. May help one in today's ever equally changing world.

Meditations provides useful insights into the philosophy of Stoicism as practised by this outstanding leader, Marcus Aurelius. The book is a journal of thinking not action so it is handy to know what Aurelius got up to during his period of leadership.

Marcus Aurellius was an amazing general, beloved statesman, and compelling philosopher. The last part seems to get left out in the history books. I loved reading his musings on the Stoics and his personal appreciation for those who taught him.
Its a compendium of a leading Stoics daily study of his philosophy. Its meaningful and useful, and personally, attempting to live a good life, I do my daily study, practice and training. Its heartening to know that over his 40-odd years Marcus Aurelius (Golden Mark) struggled in the same way as I do when each days new knowledge put into practice reveals yet another previously unknown unknown and how much further there is to go...
A journal on the merits of humility chronicled by one of the most historical leaders of the greatest dominion in the ancient world, the Roman Empire. We all have seen dramatic portrayals of Marcus Aurelius on television and in the movies, usually encamped around Germania directing and strategizing the next battle plan. What we don't see is the Stoic philosopher writing works such as this, that have survived through the ages. The book itself is fairly easy to navigate even for those unfamiliar with Greco-Roman history or philosophy. The book itself is fairly easy to navigate even for those unfamiliar with Greco-Roman history or philosophy. The Emperor wrote it in a way that allows the point of the message to come through the context. Afterall, he was only writing to himself. This particular version was the basic translation from the British author George Long, in 1862. It has an Old English style, but that doesn't detract from the essays' meanings. The only reason I rated this at 4 stars was due to this printing having just a few typos, but nothing I couldn't mentally fill in as I read along. Plus it was a very budgeted paperback copy so I didn't expect anything fancy. There are other versions and translations of this book, complete with annotations, explanations, and footnotes by an array of scholars and writers. But for the price this was just fine for me. My copy was $5 dollars. Anything more than that, look for one of those nicer versions.
The style is direct and unpretentious. The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. Marcus Aurelius delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.
