He never wrote it for anyone else to see and definitely not for publication. But somehow his journal survived and has been mass-produced for centuries!It is full of wisdom from the Stoic philosophy and shows why Marcus was such a rare person- courageous, kind, wise, fair. Virtues we can alll aspire to!

A fairly small book with a great introduction to Marcus Aurelius. An ancient Roman philosophical emperor, whose ideas helped foster Stoic ideas. Keep in mind, that this book, while short, may take proportionally longer time to 'complete' than others, as it is a some-what difficult read, as these were scribblings and personal writings (akin to a journal or diary) of Marcus, and was not meant for other eyes. As well as it being philosophical, which explores the reader to truly take their time and take in the varying perspectives and ideas seriously and not just skim-read past it all.Physical quality and time of the package and book were mint. No bends, scratches etc and with a quick arrival.
It is great to read the diary of one of the most poweful men and influencers in Stoicism.Practical philosophical wisdom that can be applied to any life situation, it changed my life forever. This is a modern translation which help to understand it easily without the old english grammar. Definitely a must read book at least once in your life.

The book itself is fairly easy to navigate even for those unfamiliar with Greco-Roman history or philosophy. The Emperor wrote it in a way that allows the point of the message to come through the context. Afterall, he was only writing to himself. This particular version was the basic translation from the British author George Long, in 1862. There are other versions and translations of this book, complete with annotations, explanations, and footnotes by an array of scholars and writers. But for the price this was just fine for me. My copy was $5 dollars. Anything more than that, look for one of those nicer versions.

The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy.
