As per the norm I couldn't be happier with my shoes. Several years ago I made the decision to buy KEEN exclusively and I haven't deviated from the decision. I DID however recieve a pair of hand me down Merrill's that hadn't been worn much. I was reminded why I only bought KEEN's. Not a fan of the fit and I had destroyed them in a few months. I guess I'm a little too active for substandard footwear. I've NEVER had a pair of KEEN's fall apart on me like that! Well...a pair of KEEN sandals. A little bit of the stitching came undone but I called KEEN and you guys provided me a voucher for the amount I paid for the sandals AND didn't expect me to return the sandals! Just accommodating all the way around. Thank you guys for doing what so many companies won't do!

I walk seven miles a day and go through a pair of Targhees every 6-10months. I've been doing this for several years now and the Targhee improvements are genuine. The latest iteration, the IV is top notch! The new protections against delamination really show and the shoe feels very durable, sturdy. The challenge with Targhees is break-in. It usually takes 55 miles for Targhees to really feel comfy. In this period my foot will often slide on the insole but after this period the insole is conformed to my foot and steady. After about six months the sole wears down to the point I feel sharp rocks through the shoe but the waterproofing remains effective. After ten months the waterproofing falls off and I replace the shoes with a new pair.

Good shoe but requires a significant break-in period. The retailer, in my area, did not have these in stock for me to try on, so I ended up ordering on line. Had I tried these on I may have balked and purchased something different. However, I (incorrectly) assumed these would be equivalent to or better than my previous pair. The earlier version(s) was/were better, IMO, and much more comfortable straight out of the box. The metatarsal area is very stiff as are the sides. I have no doubt they will last as long as my previous pair, they just require break-in.

The Targhee model has been my go to shoe for quite a few years. I currently have some Targhee II's and III's in regular service. I recently purchased a pair of Targhee IV's and am impressed after wearing them for about three months and a couple hundred miles. They are comfy, supportive, waterproof and seem to be a bit cooler than previous models. The new soles seem to have a better gripping capability and the outers seem tough and abrasion resistant. So far, I can highly recommend them. Also, kudos to Keen for offering the Targhee in wide sizes.
I bought these for my husband who never buys shoes online and was extremely skeptical of wearing Keens as an adult man, having only ever seen children wear them.Despite his skepticism, he is quite pleased with the shoes and has worn them non stop since they arrived several days ago. He likes the cushion in both the foot bed and around the ankles. He is especially impressed with the toe and how the rubber comes up and over the toe, protecting the front of the foot and preventing damage to the shoe when hiking on rough terrain. The tread is great and will assist with those same hiking trips. My husband has fairly narrow feet, so I was a bit nervous about whether the same brand that fit my kids with very wide feet (generally need New Balance wides) would also fit my husband (usually wears Nike with the laces cinched), but I was pleasantly surprised. Once he properly adjusted the laces, they fit great. I like that they don't scrunch his toes, too.My husband says "five stars are for perfection", hence the 4 stars. Not sure what could be improved, but apparently, while the shoes check all the boxes, they are *perfect*.
The Targhee IV seems to be a major improvement over prior versions of the shoe. I have experienced major problems with sole de-lamination and failures of the material on the front sides near the toes. The Targhee IV looks like it's using leather in that area now rather than some plastic-like material that started cracking on the first day of wear. The shoes are very breathable, especially for being a waterproof shoe. I have come to expect Keen shoes to be comfortable the first day and ready for hike and there was no disappointment there. Time will tell on the lamination and durability issues. But so far I am very encouraged to see a change towards a much higher quality product.
Two main issues:1) Innersole not very comfortable/soft. Sensitive of what you are walking on.2) Outsole is plastic like. Not the traditional rubber with a good grip. concerned with slipping. Feels very thin which I feel contributes to the ill comfort of the innersole.I own prior versions of the Targhee and am very happy them. I liked the looks of this new updated version but I returned them for those reasons I stated.Too bad Keen changed these important features.
I've been wearing Keen's Targhees for years. I wanted to try the IV and ordered a size 10 (which is what my III's are), it seemed a bit bigger and wider. I then went to a size 9.5 and the fit was perfect. It's a great hiker. I wore them around the house for a couple of days, prior to leaving on a camping trip. I hiked 4+ mile trails with no problem (typical for Keen). I purchased the waterproof model which worked great in stream crossings. The shoe was also quick to dry. After returning from my trip, I purchased the ventilated model; satisfied with those, as well.
I don't like wearing cloth sneakers. I have a pair of Keen boots that go over the ankles that I have had for many years. They are still going strong except that a few of the cloth eyelets have ripped.. so I thought a pair of these would be good for traveling and the Fall weather. Like others have noted, there was no break in period.. I wore them shopping and after waling on a cement floor for 90 minutes, my feet were aching. I put in gel inserts and the next time I went, I had no problems. We'll see how long the eyelets last on these. Since I don't expect treating them like my work boots, I bet they will last for a long time. I don't think I will be alive to see if they last as long as my L L Bean boots which I have had for more than 50 years, though.
I’m a solid size 11 Wide. Hard to find really good fitting “wide” shoes—always seem a little tight in the width direction. With that said, I’ve found these to be actually a good fit in both length and width. Simply because of that, I’m a repeat purchase of the near exact same shoe. Never had a shoe that did that.If I could, I’d get that repaired locally, or send them back, but don’t know if that is cost effective or worth my time pursuing. So I went ahead and bought a second pair in anticipation of having to toss the first pair pretty soon.
