I haven't noticed them retaining more sweat than usual. And, their lightness makes them mentally easier to throw them in the car or pack them in a bag than before. Other new cool features were the reflective laces (safety), how the sole goes up the back of the heel (when I use one foot to take the other shoe off the sole doesn’t start to separate from the upper like my old ones), and the back hoop for pulling them over your heel is strung through the shoe and very sturdy. (I do wonder if it could be bigger for people with large fingers.) The lace hooks are also very sturdy metal vs plastic, which gives them a quality feel. These were fixes to problems I was aware of, and also improvements to issues I didn't even know I had.The main problem for me is their looks. Not terrible and the blue matches my pants, but I am *tired* of subtly gendered colors, and (as my friend says) *ready* for the full-function hiking boot that can go from the trail to the restaurant/hotel, so the only other pair of shoes you need are shower flip-flops. The fit and the form is there - but Merrell could really lure me in (and IMO open up a new niche that would become the standard) with a sleeker, minimalist exterior and more modern/imaginative colors (while keeping all of the practicality). My friend has the taller Merrell winter hiking boots that are all black and I wish these were offered in all black (or even all brown or grey) at the very least. I do feel like I should be pairing these with khaki zip-offs, a mismatched trail button down and an archeological treasure map, which I would wear if I had them and also a time and place. But I don't, so let's hurry up the innovation please hiking boot industry.My potential future caveats are that because I haven’t owned them over multiple years, is that I don’t know how they’ll hold up (including the waterproofing/how to care for the waterproofing) and I haven’t taken them backpacking. So far the soles feel less sturdy than my high-top Vasques (can’t feel a thing through those, but can feel a little bit through these) so I will still take the Vasques backpacking as my tried-and-true. But I’ll take these on non-backpacking camping trips, post-work daily hikes, and when I’m near water.

I bought these boots at full price hoping for an amazing shoe to use for outdoors rain or shine and for a long period of time.I was very excited to get them as I've heard great things about merrells and this would be my first experience. In the store the shoes felt great and made walking feel like a breeze but when it came to standing outside for a few minutes while it lightly snowed, my socks began to feel wet. I couldn't believe it! Even my non waterproof shoes could withstand a centimeter of snow landing on them without getting soaked like that. I recently suffered a foot injury while gardening -- yes, gardening -- and really had a hard time walking without a cane and pain. Donned my old Merrell hiking boots (brown leather with red laces) that I used while recovering from a previous knee injury so that my foot and ankle were supported. They helped tremendously but I knew that newer technology would likely provide even better support so once again Merrell came to the rescue. These Moab 3 Mid Waterproof are wonderful! I put them on this morning for the first time and had no pain - I could walk without a cane! The foot and ankle are firmly supported and by adjusting the lacing I can tailor the fit. I have always had trouble finding hiking boots that are comfortable for my high arch and that are supportive around my ankles, but that cushion by ankles instead of making them hurt. These shoes were comfortable the moment I put them on and provide the support my feet need. After a few months, I purchased my 2nd pair. Now I have one to work outside in which will get dirty and dusty and another pair to wear when in the house, on the treadmill or out shopping. My property is rocky as is the land where I typically hike. The soles grip well and I haven't slipped when wearing them on loose rock. I usually wear out the bottoms of my hiking boots before the upper shoe starts showing a lot of wear. I was told that the Vibram soles on these shoes should last longer. I had bought a cheaper pair of Merrell's at a discount store years ago and wasn't impressed, but my coworkers swore by the Moab and I decided to give them a try. So glad I did. These were purchased primarily for work, where work is mountain maintenance - dirt trails, erosion ditches, single-track courses, water run-off systems, rocky scrambles - I get through it all in a day. I get a lot of all-weather exposure, too; and sometimes it feels like I see all four seasons in 24 hours. But I'm putting in miles on pavement, mountainside, and at the office for the last few weeks and man, I love these boots. The terrain varied and included swampy and muddy forest paths, volcanic sand and rocky, high altitude terrain across Guatemala and Peru. Even with difficult terrain and long distances, my feet remained blister free (this is a big plus in my opinion), my feet were dry even after being submerged in water and mud, the boot had good grip and stability without feeling restrictive in rocky conditions. When hitting the higher kms (20km +) the boot did start to feel heavy and hot and I also find that I quite easily get rocks and grit getting captured into the boot. I have had this incident happen on a couple of occasions and another occasion on Mother's Day I took the hardest fall. I was going on a casual hike with my family. I did not take my trekking poles. As I was walking the lace of one of my boots got caught in the hook of the other boot and down I went, very hard and very fast. This needs to be designed differently. Not everyone likes to wear gators. A hiking boot should be designed with comfort and safety in mind. I am fortunate I did not break anything but, I sure am sore. Good boots but most definitely not waterproof! I'm a San Fran East Bay resident and usually hike on Mount Diablo and in the local regional parks and open spaces. I purchased these at my local Sports Basement in August to replace a pair of Keen waterproof hiking boots that I wore almost daily through last year's rainy season. I wore the Moab 3 boots six times to hike our dry August/September trails and was quite satisfied with the comfort level and grip on rocky terrain. Then I took them to Montana to hike in Glacier National Park. My first hike there was an early morning one-mile nature trail at the northwest edge of the park. I wore the Moab 3 boots six times to hike our dry August/September trails and was quite satisfied with the comfort level and grip on rocky terrain. Then I took them to Montana to hike in Glacier National Park. My first hike there was an early morning one-mile nature trail at the northwest edge of the park. No creek or lake crossings were involved. The high grass surrounding the trail was very damp with the morning dew. The boots were soaked through after that short one-mile loop. I returned to my cabin where I poured an eighth of an inch of water out of the right boot and changed dripping wet socks. I hiked the remainder of my Glacier NP trip in my sneakers. Sports Basement accepted my return so I'm satisfied with the outcome but these boots are simply not waterproof. They'd be fine for a year-round dry climate/desert hiking.
Try a few sizes at different stores. Why? Here's my experience: I wanted to get a discount on Merrell's website so my goal was to order online, but before ordering, I decided to try them in-store (not a Merrell store) and the medium size (7.5 - my usual size) fits perfectly and very comfortable; it was like walking on a cloud. I don't have very big feet, but I think my toes are a little bit bigger/wider than the average, and as I said, the fit was perfect. Based on their answer, I decided to send them back, but first, I decided to go back to the store where I tried the boots for the very first time and guess what, they fitted perfectly... I was confused, again. The seller asked me to bring the boots I ordered online into the store to compare them together. Fun fact: it was the same size and the same colour indicated on the two boxes, but physically, it was not exactly the same colour: the ones I ordered online had a light grey line on the top of the boots and the ones I tried in the store had a dark grey line on the top (see the picture attached), and the batch numbers were different. I email once again customer service, and they told me they had made some changes that can affect the fit.So, in brief, I would recommend going to different places to try these hiking boots. As I said, my toes are a little bit bigger/wider than the average and the standard size, with the darker grey line, is the perfect fit for me - it's a perfect "in-between" between the standard size and the wider size, and they are very comfortable; it's like walking on a cloud! I can't wait to try these boots on a hike! They look good quality.
I have worn Moab Mids for something like 15 years, this was my 4th pair. I have loved these boots for their comfort and fit right out of the box, they have never caused blisters or hotspots, they were supportive and rugged but also lightweight, my absolute favorite boot. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left. It took me years to find boots that didn’t cause issues and now I’m going to have to go back to square one to find new boots, which is very frustrating, especially after the amount I spent on this new pair.
