Comfy, lightweight, great wide sizes

I was looking for a lightweight pair of hiking boots for my super wide feet, ideally waterproof. Most hiking boots pinch the sides of my feet pretty quickly, but these never did, and they broke in very quickly. It does feel like the arch support is a little further back than in other shoes, but it works for my feet! They generally feel waterproof, though if I step in several inches of water, some does seem to get through to my socks (but that could be what comes in through the top or around the laces of the shoe). I've haven't done any super intense hiking but I've had these on for full days in all kinds of environments: trails, beaches, walking around streams, regular day to day, and they've stayed comfortable and supportive. So I just got back from an extending trekking/climbing trip to Nepal. In general I would say that the boot performed well. It is definitely waterproof but perhaps therein lies the "but". We were typically moving for about 6 hours a day and at the end of each day my socks would be soaked and my toes looked like raisins. As a disclaimer, I typically sweat more than the average person so take my comments with that in mind. As we gained altitude the issues diminished but I would say that this could cause some serious trench foot for extended hikes. Great traction and protection but the waterproofing seems to come at a price. I will definitely keep these boots but will only use them as my second option when the weather turns wet. About 10 years ago, I was at the REI store in Seattle shopping for a new pair of light hikers. I found the perfect pair; they fit my feet perfectly, had all the features I was seeking, and the price was right. Then, I overheard a woman sitting near me talking about a pair of boots she'd loved so much she wore them out. She was at REI that day to purchase a new pair of the exact same boot. I decided I had to try the Merrells she was talking about. Amazed that the fit and feel of the boots was superior than the "perfect ones" I'd already found, I bought them and since that time have purchased additional pairs. I wear them in the garden, for local walks, on the trail. I keep a pair in my car and almost always travel with a pair.

I don’t even want to wear a different shoe or boot
28 January 2024

I’ve been wearing Merrell, Columbia and some else hiking shoes for 8? years. I am a nurse and use them for work and would not change that until I tried on the Moab 3 hiking boots. When I put them on at the store I thought ā€œWow, these feel great! I bought them to actually hike and thought I should break them in before hiking. So, I’ve been wearing them to work and everywhere. They didn’t actually need to be broken in after all because they feel like they were made for MY feet. They feel just as comfortable after a 12 or 16 hour shift as when I put them on in the morning. Sometimes I think about how good they feel that I need to tell others how wonderful they are. People say, ā€œwell that’s great Mary. I’m glad you like themā€ . Lack of ankle support, not wide enough
23 October 2023

Looking for a wide shoe (previously wearing Altras but the new version is just not wide enough). My shoe size is 5.5 and I had to size up to 6.5 to get the width. This in itself isn't abnormal, but was looking for a wider shoe with stability. I ended up feeling that these didn't have as much ankle support as I thought, especially being that they are higher top. They are also extremely heavy (much heavier than I anticipated) and I could feel it throughout the entire hike. Ended up doing one hike in the Gunks of about 7 miles and I had pretty bad neuropathy throughout the hike (even though they felt good at first as soon I started climbing I felt the neuropathy was worse on uphill rather than downhill). Just also did not feel as stable as anticipated in the ankle.

Merrell uppers wear out WAY too fast.
10 September 2024

I've had these 13.5 months. Right after I bought them, I had an unrelated injury, so I was doing less hiking than usual. I also have other footwear I use for hiking: approach shoes, technical approach shoes, trail runners, and mountaineering boots. So my estimate is they've seen 20 days of hiking total. The tread still looks nice and new. Unfortunately, stitches are coming out in the toe box area of BOTH boots. I only noticed at trailhead yesterday, embarking on a 2-day backpack. One boot unraveled further quite a bit on this short hiking trip.I bought these to replace some Solomon boots of a similar design. After A LOT of use, over several years, the tread of the Solomons was shot. The uppers still look great, better than these barely used Merrell. A brand I'm ...Ā MoreI've had these 13.5 months. Most Comfortable Boots EVER!
9 June 2024

The pair of Merrell Moab boots I’ve had for YEARS sadly reached the point they needed to be replaced. When I found these, I KNEW I had a worthy (& perfect) replacement. Right out of the box, these Moab 3 mid hiking boots are SO comfortable! It’s like walking on a cloud! I have narrow feet with a high arch & suffer intermittently from plantar fasciitis, so I often have difficulty finding shoes that fit & make my foot feel comfortable. In usually wear size 8.5, but these are just a tad smaller than my previous pair of Merrell Moab hiking boots, so I ended up exchanging them for a half size larger (like several other reviewers). Perfection! I’m looking forward to hiking & walking again in my EXTREMELY comfortable, VERY durable & really CUTE boots! This seemed to have been a good choice as they fit me well when I'm wearing extremely thick woolly socks; I want to ensure I still have lots of room for toe spread when scampering up and down steep rocky trails. I can still wear a thin second pair of socks if needed. Despite sizing up, my heel still fits securely enough without lifting.I'm very happy and excited to wear these on my trip.

Reliably good hiking boot

Now that I’ve well and truly tested my Merrell’s out, I can give a review. I wore these hiking boots on two 5 day hikes, ranging from 15-26kms each day. The terrain varied and included swampy and muddy forest paths, volcanic sand and rocky, high altitude terrain across Guatemala and Peru. Even with difficult terrain and long distances, my feet remained blister free (this is a big plus in my opinion), my feet were dry even after being submerged in water and mud, the boot had good grip and stability without feeling restrictive in rocky conditions. When hitting the higher kms (20km +) the boot did start to feel heavy and hot and I also find that I quite easily get rocks and grit getting captured into the boot. Very Disappointed
29 December 2023

I have worn Moab Mids for something like 15 years, this was my 4th pair. I have loved these boots for their comfort and fit right out of the box, they have never caused blisters or hotspots, they were supportive and rugged but also lightweight, my absolute favorite boot. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left. There is a very stiff, thick seam running on the inside of the ankle about 2 cm from the top of the boot which is what is causing the issue. I was able to finish my hike after applying bandaids and moleskin and I was hoping the seam would soften but it really hasn’t done so and it started rubbing on my ankle bones as well. It took me years to find boots that didn’t cause issues and now I’m going to have to go back to square one to find new boots, which is very frustrating, especially after the amount I spent on this new pair.
