Good shoe - needs older insole & some softening

Bottom line up front: To be as comfrotable as the moab 2, Merrel needs to move back to the Moab 2's insole (Kinetic Fit Advanced Footbed) and slightly soften the mid sole.Pros of the Moab 3:It's a good boot that's supportive and fits well. It's grippy and relatively light for a hiking boot.Cons of the Moab 3:-> The insole is much worse in the Moab 3 than in the Moab 2. The 2 had a pressed and perforated EVA insole that was very responsive and stayed springy for years of use. The 3 has a blue metatarsal pad which is inlayed into the insole. This portion of the insole is very, very unresponsive and lacks the same amount of cushion and responsiveness as the 2's forefoot insole. The result is a fit that feels like i'm walking on a hard surface. In my attached images, I've applied roughly the same pressure to the front of the insert to demonstrate how the Moab 3's insert is very flimsy at the forefoot. The older insole is much more sturdy and spongey in the same area. You can purchase the same kinetic fit insoles as the Moab 2's for extra, but only in whole sizes :(-> The midsole is stiffer than the Moab 2, and this contributes to the pressure at the heel and the forefoot. Both of these means the forefoot experiences a ton more pressure and feels much stiffer and less comfortable after walking out of the store. It's more uncomfortable to stand for hours or walk for miles, and it feels like I'm closer to injury at any given point than with the Moab 2.

I bought these for backpacking. At first this shoe felt good so I walked around my house for a while. I always size up when I buy hiking shoes and these certainly had plenty of length. The toe box was comfortable, not too wide for the socks I wear. The insoles were not very cushy and the arch support hit me in a weird spot so I swapped them out for some others I had. At this point the shoes were very comfortable. The one problem I couldn't get past was the width of the heel. They're much wider than than the trail runners I hike in for shorter hikes. My heels kept slipping up and down - this seems like a potential blister producer so I'm probably returning them, but I have a couple of other pairs coming to compare to and then will decide.

After trying every other highly rated and recommended hiking shoe, and returning them because they just didn’t work for me, I decided to circle back to Merrell. Years ago, I had a heavy, leather pair that served me well on a trip through Germany and held up over the cobblestone streets, etc. but I had tried and failed to find an equivalent — until the Moab 3. Right out of the box, I took them for a 3 mile test walk. Regular size 8 fit perfectly on my wide foot, with plenty of room in the toe box. I could adjust the laces for a comfortable fit over my high instep, but still cinch them at the ankle to lock my heels in with no slipping. Arch support was superb. The Moab is one of a very few shoes where you can get both Gore-Tex waterproofing and a Vibram sole. It is a heavier shoe with a very stiff feel underfoot, so it took some getting used to. For me, after clocking a total of 12 miles in the shoes, the weight didn’t bother me anymore, but if you do urban hiking, you definitely feel like you’re “pounding” the pavement. The shoes really excel on softer trails where they provide sure footed confidence. I do wish the insole had a bit more cushioning in the forefoot because after about 3+ miles, my foot starts to tire in that area. I’ve toyed with the thought of switching out the insoles, but I don’t want to mess with the arch support. So glad that I decided to give the Moab 3 a try. This shoe is legendary for a reason.

Love these shoes!
22 October 2023

I was walking up a hill earlier today and reflecting on how comfortable these Moab 3 hiking shoes are, so I came home and started writing this review. I bought my shoes in May 2023, so I've been wearing them a few months now. I don't hike the longer trails anymore because the hubs and I can't do them, and I've permanently retired my old hardcore hiking shoes. The Moab 3s been wonderful for the short hikes and walks that I take nowadays, plus I've worn them shopping and during day trips. I'm an older obese woman with big wide feet who lands on the outer edges of her feet/heels when she walks, and these shoes have provided excellent support for urban walks and short hikes on groomed gravel trails. I decided to get back into hiking, now that I'm older. After shopping many brands, I decided wo go with Merrill and chose this model. They are well made and stable and I love them, although they are a bit heavier and more "substantial" than I expected. Sizing was right on (My size is 13 N normally, and these 13 N fit just fine). They were comfortable right from the start. I mostly hike on trails in woods, with some roots and rocks; a lighter weight shoe would have suited me just fine. I did end up buying another pair or Merrill hiking shoes (Alverstone 2) which now I am using more often. They are lighter waterproof and lighter weight and will end up being my day-today hiking shoes, with the Moab 3 pair for rougher terrain. I am happy I have both pairs. NONE BETTER

Bought these as a light-colored (Walnut), lighter weight alternative to the Merrell mid-height shoes I wear during winter months. These are much more suited to summer since Merrell doesn’t make their “water shoes” in wide. And I can’t wear anything that’s not wide. My feet simply won’t allow it.Fortunately, my favorite MOAB 3s come in a whole host of varieties. One to suit every season, place, and mood, it seems. And they ALWAYS fit me like a glove. My feet just love them. Each time I foolishly am tempted to try another brand, I’m sorry. Immediately. And they wear out seemingly immediately. The damage to my feet considerable. So, at my age (70), I’m buying nothing but Merrell MOAB 3s because there are literally NONE BETTER. Not for me. Not for my feet. I am so sad but these do not work for me. I tried these out on a few day hikes (without any blisters; easy to break in) before taking them on a Grand Canyon backpacking trip. I even replaced the insoles with something more cushy. On my first day climbing down the canyon, my arches were killing me. At first I figured it was just because of the steep descent, but later I took them on a 6.5 mile hike in upstate NY, climbing up steep rocks with a 1400 ft elevation gain. By the time the trail leveled back out, the undersides of my toes were in tons of pain. It feels like the bottom of the shoe is pushing up on the bottom of my toes, and there is no give even with a different insole. Overall I think they are too stiff for me and I need more flexibility and cushioning. I ... MoreI am so sad but these do not work for me. The update was a downgrade
3 January 2024

I've been wearing Moabs for... years. Maybe a decade? I but a waterproof pair, and a non-waterproof pair for summer and when they wear out, I re-buy them. They were great. I have bought a pair at an REI on the way to the trailhead, hiked all day, and never had any issues. The "update" has truly downgraded what was an excellent shoe. The fit is very different and doesn't feel as supportive in the right places, the whole footbed fits differently. My toes hit in weird ways, and my whole foot hurts as a result. I've gotten my first blister in these. This is not my first pair of Moabs so I know how they used to fit, and how the older pairs have I have fit. I don't know what I'm going to do going forward. Very comfy
12 November 2023

I was looking for a good hiking shoe for a while and after browsing online for quite a while I settled on these and boy am I glad I did. These fit comfortably right out of the box and are the perfect size. I like that they are snug and yet have room for your toes to breath. I've worn them out on hikes a few times already and they are wonderful. They held up well on the trail for hours. I absolutely love them and hope they last for a long time! My sister saw these and tried them on as well. She too fell in love and ordered herself a pair as well, though in half a size smaller as she has a slightly smaller foot then me. I definitely recommend these for anyone who's looking for a comfortable hiking shoe!

until I die

I've been wearing these every day for years, and they are the best shoes I've ever owned. I wear the ventilated ones in summer and waterproof in winter. I was born with serious overpronation and excessively high arches, requiring me to be careful about shoes for all of my 60 years. On our farm out in the country, I feel stones through the soles of tennis shoes. Moabs protect and support my feet walking on trails or working on the farm. They are wide enough for my feet to wear my correct size instead of requiring me to buy a size larger--this helps prevent my tripping problem from foot drop--most of the time. I use power step insoles instead of the ones that come with the shoes for better arch support. The only other shoes I wear are Birkenstocks (when wearing a dress) for all the reasons above. I'll likely continue buying these until the day I die.
