I’ve hiked regularly with these boots and am very pleased with them. First of all, they were the best fit for my wide, flat feet. And I love the fact that they don’t have pink or purple on them - why do manufacturers think all women want to wear girly colors, all the time? They have decent, moderate ankle support, and don’t bruise my ankles at the top of the boot! The laces don’t loosen up as I walk if I cross them only one extra time, just below the top, so they hold my feet in place securely without squeezing them too hard. They protect my feet from rocks and roots nicely. They grip the terrain well, though I haven’t been far enough from home to get above tree-line yet. I pronate badly in most boots, but these center my weight over the soles pretty well. My feet ... MoreI’ve hiked regularly with these boots and am very pleased with them. The only complaint I have is that they could have more arch support, but then they probably wouldn’t fit as many women. Hoping the moderate cushioning lasts a long time, and looking forward to putting many more miles on them!

If you have worn and love the older version Moab boots, you will love the Moab 3 even more. The toe box is a little more generous so I ended up needing a half size smaller than my old Moabs. These boots are comfortable right out of the box. I do replace the insoles with Sidas brand insoles that provide better arch support. These boots are not "waterproof", I'd describe them as water resistant. If you hike in light rain you'll probably be okay, a little splashing on a water crossing also probably okay, but anything more than that and you're socks will get wet. Overall though, I'll be wearing these boots for as long as Merrell makes them.

So I just got back from an extending trekking/climbing trip to Nepal. In general I would say that the boot performed well. It is definitely waterproof but perhaps therein lies the "but". We were typically moving for about 6 hours a day and at the end of each day my socks would be soaked and my toes looked like raisins. As a disclaimer, I typically sweat more than the average person so take my comments with that in mind. As we gained altitude the issues diminished but I would say that this could cause some serious trench foot for extended hikes. Great traction and protection but the waterproofing seems to come at a price. I will definitely keep these boots but will only use them as my second option when the weather turns wet. Otherwise, bring plenty of spare socks ... MoreSo I just got back from an extending trekking/climbing trip to Nepal. In general I would say that the boot performed well. I wore these shoes out of the house for the first time on hikes in mid-May in Broken Bow, OK. It got hot hiking, but my feet were fine! These shoes lived up to their claim of not needing to be broken in! Though I'm not used to shoes that come up my ankle, these never hurt me and were comfortable through several miles of hikes. I did leave the very top eyes unlaced, but will tie them next time. It's great to have that option. We didn't hike through water so I can't comment on the waterproof part. I'm very glad to have comfortable, supportive hiking boots that I can wear in warm weather! I did wear good wool socks with them.
About 10 years ago, I was at the REI store in Seattle shopping for a new pair of light hikers. I found the perfect pair; they fit my feet perfectly, had all the features I was seeking, and the price was right. Then, I overheard a woman sitting near me talking about a pair of boots she'd loved so much she wore them out. She was at REI that day to purchase a new pair of the exact same boot. I decided I had to try the Merrells she was talking about. Amazed that the fit and feel of the boots was superior than the "perfect ones" I'd already found, I bought them and since that time have purchased additional pairs. I wear them in the garden, for local walks, on the trail. I keep a pair in my car and almost always travel with a pair.
I’ve been wearing Merrell, Columbia and some else hiking shoes for 8? years. I am a nurse and use them for work and would not change that until I tried on the Moab 3 hiking boots. When I put them on at the store I thought “Wow, these feel great! I bought them to actually hike and thought I should break them in before hiking. So, I’ve been wearing them to work and everywhere. They didn’t actually need to be broken in after all because they feel like they were made for MY feet. They feel just as comfortable after a 12 or 16 hour shift as when I put them on in the morning. Sometimes I think about how good they feel that I need to tell others how wonderful they are. People say, “well that’s great Mary. I’m glad you like them” . My feet are 62 years old and I’ve been through a lot with them. Some wicked plantar fasciitis. They feel so well supported that I don’t notice any support I just feel nothing but pleasure.
Looking for a wide shoe (previously wearing Altras but the new version is just not wide enough). My shoe size is 5.5 and I had to size up to 6.5 to get the width. This in itself isn't abnormal, but was looking for a wider shoe with stability. I ended up feeling that these didn't have as much ankle support as I thought, especially being that they are higher top. They are also extremely heavy (much heavier than I anticipated) and I could feel it throughout the entire hike. Ended up doing one hike in the Gunks of about 7 miles and I had pretty bad neuropathy throughout the hike (even though they felt good at first as soon I started climbing I felt the neuropathy was worse on uphill rather than downhill). Just also did not feel as stable as anticipated in the ankle.
Comfortable straight off the bat. Purchased for an upcoming Himalayas trek; I put them straight on to "break them in" but they are a great fit straight away, perfectly warm and comfy. Zero issues and felt like I was walking on a cloud immediately. So far, amazing for standing on cold sidelines of kids winter sport...I did a fair bit of research of other recommended brands for Himalayan adventures and chose the Merrell from having a good prior experience with the brand and also, this shoe having such a good reputation on online forums. The final deciding factor was it being on sale.I took a chance and sized up a half size based on reading reviews of others experience with this shoe. This seemed to have been a good choice as they fit me well when I'm wearing extremely thick woolly socks; I want to ensure I still have lots of room for toe spread when scampering up and down steep rocky trails. I can still wear a thin second pair of socks if needed. Despite sizing up, my heel still fits securely enough without lifting.I'm very happy and excited to wear these on my trip.
Now that I’ve well and truly tested my Merrell’s out, I can give a review. I wore these hiking boots on two 5 day hikes, ranging from 15-26kms each day. The terrain varied and included swampy and muddy forest paths, volcanic sand and rocky, high altitude terrain across Guatemala and Peru. Even with difficult terrain and long distances, my feet remained blister free (this is a big plus in my opinion), my feet were dry even after being submerged in water and mud, the boot had good grip and stability without feeling restrictive in rocky conditions. When hitting the higher kms (20km +) the boot did start to feel heavy and hot and I also find that I quite easily get rocks and grit getting captured into the boot. These were minor things but more noticeable when doing ... MoreNow that I’ve well and truly tested my Merrell’s out, I can give a review. I have worn Moab Mids for something like 15 years, this was my 4th pair. I have loved these boots for their comfort and fit right out of the box, they have never caused blisters or hotspots, they were supportive and rugged but also lightweight, my absolute favorite boot. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left. There is a very stiff, thick seam running on the inside of the ankle about 2 cm from the top of the boot which is what is causing the issue. I was able to finish my hike after applying bandaids and moleskin and I was hoping the seam would soften but it really hasn’t done so and it started rubbing on my ankle bones as well. It took me years to find boots that didn’t cause issues and now I’m going to have to go back to square one to find new boots, which is very frustrating, especially after the amount I spent on this new pair.
