Dread the control and handling of this game

Plus playing this game on Joy Cons feels god awful, those analog sticks aren’t made for precise aiming, you’ll die to an EMMI just because of how overly sensitive the joy sticks are. You shouldn’t have to spend $60+ on a pro controller just to get a better experience. If you are new to the series, I say just watch the game on YouTube and play Super Metroid on the Nintendo online service. For returning fans, I know it’s important to support this series but this game is lacking the true smoothness of a Metroid game.

Samus is cooler than she's ever been and it's great to see her get some closure for events in her past. Note that this a pretty difficult game compared to Nintendo's usual fare. Bosses will kill you several times before you get a read on their patterns, so you'll need patience and dedication to make it through. I would not recommend this game to younger children or anyone who's easily stressed out by demanding combat. But as someone who enjoys a challenge, I adored Metroid Dread and I can't wait to play it a second time.

You may get lost sometimes, however it's usual not for very long. - Atmosphere: 11:10: This game might just have the greatest atmosphere I have ever experienced in any game. The planet ZDR ranges from desolate laboratories to lush forests, and every environment is both engaging and lively, with incredibly detailed backgrounds that feel artistic yet alive. I can tell that a lot of effort went into the backgrounds, because they really sell the atmosphere of this game and add extra little details, which is always appreciated. I also love how the feeling of isolation and dread is felt exquisitely throughout the whole game. - Horror: 9/10: I would not consider Metroid: Dread to be a proper horror game, however it does have a lot of horror aspects. This is most prevalent in the E.M.M.I. stealth sections, in which an indestructible GLaDOS Demogorgon will chase Samus in designated areas of the map. When entering these rooms, the player will notice an immediate change in the environment. The music turns eerie, and even the visuals have become slightly dark and distorted. I love how these sections can be pretty tense and terrifying due to the fact that the E.M.M.I.'s are attracted to motion, and how these are threats that not even Samus has the means to take down. My only complaint about the horror aspects of this game is that I feel as if the E.M.M.I. sections could have had better placement throughout the campaign as a whole. - Combat: 10/10: I can safely say that Metroid: Dread has the best combat out of any Metroid game so far. It's fluid, fast-paced, and requires timing, aim, and skill. This game also has some of my favorite boss battles ever, and some aspects of combat even remind me of DOOM: Eternal, which is a very high compliment. - Music: 9/10: As usual, this Metroid game has an absolutely stellar soundtrack, full of songs that are both enjoyable to listen to yet also enhance the atmosphere. - Story: 9/10: I'm not going to talk about any spoilers, however I think the story is handled really well in this game. It would have been awesome to have lore entries like in the Prime games, however I was not expecting this since nothing like that has ever been done in a 2d Metroid game before. I also think that Samus as a character is handled spectacularly. - Visuals: 11/10: Metroid: Dread is another example of a graphical underpowered game that somehow looks gorgeous due to the incredible art-style and jaw-dropping lighting. This seriously has some of the best lighting I've ever seen in a 2d game and is certainly a contender for one of the best looking games I've ever played. - Final Score: 79/80

Great, But It Still Doesn't Top Super
9 November 2021

A great return to the series but not without flaws imho. Samus is noticeably faster to manuever, which is a bit of a double edged sword to me. She has no slow walking movement and only basically has one speed, which is running. When trying to get somewhere this is great. When trying to be precise, like when fighting, it can be to your detriment though. The EMMI gimmick is honestly more annoying than scary. The game tries to encourage playing a certain way, but its actually better to ignore their advice. Using stealth more often than not is unreliable, and the best strat is to let the EMMI get behind you, then simply footrace it to the exit. Also the game misleads you into thinking to try timing the counter right when you see the light in the EMMI's eye. It's ... MoreA great return to the series but not without flaws imho. It's actually too hard to do that on reaction, and a better idea is to press the button right before you think it will appear. Bosses can be difficult but usually 2-3 tries and you'll get the pattern down. It's just they do so much damage its tough to learn it on the fly 1st try. The music is also some of the weaker tracks I've heard in the series. Out of all the areas, I only remember the jungle as the best. And even that one was so so. Still, I couldn't put it down while playing it. It was great to get into a 2d Metroid since Fusion. I just couldn't help but compare it to the stronger entries in the series.

Ludovic's review of Nintendo Switch Metroid Dread: Special Edition
20 November 2021

I am discovering the Metroid franchise with Dread and I really enjoyed it. I bought the Special edition because I love seeing the game artworks. This edition in particular is nice because the book has 190 pages I think and it's a large book with a hard cover. The packaging is larger than I thought which I was very happy about.About the game itself, the gameplay is rich with a lot of different skills to master which, sometimes, makes me miss the right button combination (no button customization options available in-game unfortunately.) but overall it is dynamic, fast and fluid. The ambiance is well balanced and from what I could hear it is remaster of the original Metroid franchise soundtracks and sound samples. Quite pleasant in my opinion alongside with fresh and colorful graphics and different level environments. Some details are moving in the background, cool lighting effects, etc... really well done! The game give me some hard times with some of the bosses for example! But if you observe them correctly and play with Samus new skills, it's doable and it brings so much satisfaction when you beat them. On the other hand, good luck to find all the hidden items! I couldn't get them all... I'm not skilled enough I'm afraid. I will give it another try after I completely finish the game.I personally been playing 12 hours and I am about the fight the final boss. It's not so long to be honest... I wish the game has some replayability options at some point... Because I couldn't see any multi-player or anything like that could extent the game lifetime.Overall very happy and I strongly recommend it. If you are hesitating and you are reading this comment, go for it, you won't regret it.

Metroid returns to form in this 2D masterpiece

Who doesn't appreciate a good 2D Metroid game? That's what you get here, plus a couple of new twists. In Metroid Dread, you'll explore the subterranean depths of the planet ZDR while avoiding the E.M.M.I. robots periodically. Samus can obtain her usual array of weapons and techniques over the course of the game (plus a couple new variations on past ones), but there's also a new counter melee attack which is essential for defeating certain enemies. As for the E.M.M.I. robots, they are a pain to avoid...but they only track you within the confines of their designated zones. Thankfully, you'll eventually obtain an Omega Cannon from each area's core to destroy the respective E.M.M.I. that haunts the region. The graphics are some of the nicest to ever grace the Switch, most areas are of a respectable size, and there's plenty of hidden items. After the mediocre Other M, it's nice to see Metroid return to its 2D roots!

One of Favorite Nintendo Games of All Time

I am seeing a lot of criticism of this game because it is hard and requires trial and error. These are true. However, that is completely the point of this gameplay style. It's fast paced and challenging. You are given everything you need to succeed. It is up to the player alone to put those resources to use and overcome what the game throws at you. I died A TON in this game, but each time I learned from it and did not repeat the same mistakes during encounters. A game over screen in this game never feels unwarranted or unfair. If I died, it is because I made a mistake, not because the game cheated me or tricked me. Go into this game knowing that you will make a ton of mistakes and will have to put your knowledge of the game's enemy types and encounters to the test ... MoreI am seeing a lot of criticism of this game because it is hard and requires trial and error. Go into this game knowing that you will make a ton of mistakes and will have to put your knowledge of the game's enemy types and encounters to the test to overcome them. I bet you will have a better time. This game is absolutely amazing, and it blew all of my expectations out of the water. The story is told subtly and well through character movements and interactions, with some small dialogue. This game takes Metroid back to its roots with more open ended map design and a non-linear format. The graphics are quite nice for a Switch game, and I found myself completely loving the animations in this (easily one of the BEST parts of the game). I have to say that I absolutely loved the boss fights in Dread. To me, there are several in this one that are certainly among the series' best encounters. Please check this game out and give it a fair chance. Don't give up on it just because you die over and over. I promise if you stick with it, you'll overcome the challenges presented to you. A solid 10/10 for me. Easily one of my favorite games in the past decade +.

One of the tightest controlling games ever played
1 November 2022

I am not a typical fan of this series, the first Metroid I ever played was Prime back on the gamecube so I wasnt jumping to buy this when it came out. I recently bought an 8bitdo controller for my switch and saw this on sale so I decided it would be a good title to test out this controller on. I can say with all honesty that this game has some of the tightest controlls of any game I've played going all the way to the NES for me. The developers nailed it, Samus controls and reacts instantaneously which is crucial for these types of games. The different button combos make it so that tight controls are a must and when you pull off a maneuver, it feels very satisfying. My only complaints so far are that yhr graphics dont look great ok a 55inch 4k TV, all the rough edges ... MoreI am not a typical fan of this series, the first Metroid I ever played was Prime back on the gamecube so I wasnt jumping to buy this when it came out. My only complaints so far are that yhr graphics dont look great ok a 55inch 4k TV, all the rough edges show through. Also (like any Metroid Vania) it can be easy to become stuck. Whats more frustrating is that there will be no obvious sign for progressing. On one occasion I became stuck only to find out I needed to blast an innocuous wall to move forward. Overall though, a very near perfect game

Nintendo has been frustrating us for years with the painfully slow development of Metroid Prime 4. And while I do still look forward to that game, Metroid Dread has me feeling OK about MP4 taking its sweet time. This game is a reminder on why there is a whole subgenre of action-adventure games called Metroidvanias. This game is a master class and showcasing the elements that make it such a popular gaming formula in the first place. It is certainly not a perfect game, but it is an excellent effort with great care and consideration and how it was made. Hopefully with this engine in place, Nintendo can roll out sequels with greater ease, even if they have ended the original main arc Metroid storyline with this game. The teen rating is there for a reason, I definitely ... MoreNintendo has been frustrating us for years with the painfully slow development of Metroid Prime 4. The teen rating is there for a reason, I definitely would not encourage younger children to play this game on their own. But that really has more to do with the mood and atmosphere that the gaming environment creates rather than anything that might be considered unsavory or taboo for typical media reasons why parents might turn away from certain games. Welcome back, Samus! May we never see you go with nearly as long of an absence in 2D Metroidvania gaming again!

SPOILER FREE REVIEW I went into the game blind, I saw the one teaser trailer and that was it. So I didn't exactly know what to expect. The game is solid with only arguable nitpicks I can throw at it. The problems/nitpicks: -You cannot use the dpad for movement. Something I wish I had the option for. The reasoning is likely they want you aiming precisely with your arm cannon but I find running around in a 2D platformer with an analog stick to be clunky and annoying. -The game's framerate can be oddly inconsistent, some have suggested this is a memory leak and COULD be patched. It's by no means a deal breaker, but it's really obvious when it happens. -Almost zero options, you can't remap any buttons, there's no alternate control schemes, you can't change the ... MoreSPOILER FREE REVIEW I went into the game blind, I saw the one teaser trailer and that was it. The usual Nintendo thing they do for some reason. Onto the good: Visually the game is a treat, they capture a lot of detail in all the environments you explore, effects look really good and they have awesome art design that really shines through when you get a bit further. Audio wise I think it sounds really good, the weapons hit hard, the ambient noises are solid and the music is more atmospheric this time but it's fitting considering this game is leaning harder into the more tense horror. Story, without spoiling anything I will say this: They treat Metroid as a series and Samus with a lot of respect and do the series and Samus as a character justice. The game is highly replayable, not only is there a lot to explore, there's a lot of power ups and going faster & grabbing 100% of items is always a big draw to the series. Also this game has a bunch of sequence breaks and ways to deal with bosses because of that, that makes this game way, way more interesting on repeat playthroughs. I beat it and on my first playthrough it took about 7 hours. The game isn't a cake walk though and can challenge you for sure. I 100% recommend this game, it's a fantastic entry to the series and sequel to Fusion- a game I never thought I'd see them make a sequel for
