So, she needed a workhorse laptop that also wasn't going to be like carry rocks in a bag. This laptop has been ideal.I was concerned about the AMD Ryzen chip. We've been Intel and Apple silicon loyalists. But this chip has been a revelation. It's been quick and easily able to handle the workload.I'm sold on Surface Laptops.

I never thought that Microsoft would make hardware such as laptops, but I guess it's a natural outgrowth of their successful X-Box products. Now, I'm pretty much set on this product line. They start up quickly and are darn-near perfect for the average user.I'm very pleased with this laptop. I've been using the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and ran out of room on the SSD despite offloading a lot of my documents to the micro SD card. I also needed a bigger screen for some CAD work I do.This laptop fills the bill. The 15" screen is beautiful. Despite the size of the screen, the unit itself is very light. And thin! The overall build quality is excellent. The entire laptop has a quality look and feel. And finally, the Surface line has a USB-C port. The overall build quality is excellent. The entire laptop has a quality look and feel. And finally, the Surface line has a USB-C port. There is also the regular USB-A port and a Surface Connect port.Speaking of USB-C, you can charge the laptop via this port as well as all of the usual USB functions. A phone charger won't do it, though. You will need a USB Type-C PD charger rated at 60W or higher. What is missing from this laptop that is present in the Surface Pro 7 is the micro SD slot. While the SSD is twice as large as my old Surface Pro 7 (256 GB vs. 128 GB), eventually the disk will be filled. Being able to use the micro SD card as a second drive is very useful. On the other hand, the newer Surface products have an SSD that can be replaced, which is unusual nowadays. All in all, this is a great laptop. I'm glad I bought it and glad that I could get a price break buying it refurbished. One thing that I should mention is the packaging. Rather than all the foam and other trash-generating packing material that you usually have to deal with, my refurbished unit came in a box that had the laptop held firmly between a piece of cardboard and plastic film. I was very impressed when I opened and saw how little material was used to package this thing. I care about the environment like everybody else, but what I really liked about the packaging is that I didn't have to fill a garbage can with all the usual foam and cardboard. I don't know how it was originally packaged by Microsoft, but the refurbished unit came this way. Props to Best Buy for doing it this way.

I’ve now purchased a second machine because I thought the first one was faulty because the keyboard and mousepad did not work at all. Thought maybe when it was getting refurbished that something wasn’t connected properly. NO it turns out when they reflash the machine they wipe any and all drivers from the laptop so literally NOTHING functions! Wi-Fi won’t show anything, touchscreen doesn’t work and the entire keyboard doesn’t work except the power key. Be prepared with a USB keyboard and mouse to set up the laptop because that’s the only way you’ll get to do it. Also make sure you have another machine to download drivers onto a USB and then transfer it to your new laptop. Absolutely ridiculous when buying something refurbished. Honestly this is a nice laptop works great no issues with the laptop until you have to charge it. Right out of the box i needed to get the charger replaced within the 1st month. Then about 11months after that and now we are looking at ordering another charger... so aggravated! My brother has same laptop and says charger only lasts about 1.5 years on average before needing replacement so it is either a common issue or we just so happened to get the 2 worst of the lot!!!! Never again... i'd give zero stars if i could. Not to mention the argument with BestBuy itself when i tried doing a return in beginning bc i was barely past the return date and Microsoft would only send me a replacement cord for the 1st time!
I have been looking for a good Windows laptop for many years, different manufacturers, many returns to Best Buy. I wound up switching to Macbooks because although the laptops I had been been buying had some of the features I wanted, most of them let me down with crappy trackpads. Seemd no Windows laptops manufacturers could rival the almost-alien but exceptional palm-rejection of the Macbooks. I have very big hands and I couldn't find a laptop with a trackpad with palm-rejection good enough where the cursor didn't bounce around as I typed. Until now. Also the feel of the trackpad surface feels like Gorilla-glass-- a very smooth, responsive, comfortable experience.Although I think this laptop is probably a little overpriced, what you get for the money is a fantastic experience. The touchpad is a class act-- like my Macbook Air-- no unintended movement-- rock solid. I know Microsoft is competing directly against the Macbooks in this category, and that stiff competition forced them to produce this marvelous machine. I grew up with Windows machines and preferred them because there are things about the Mac operating system I can't seem to get used to. Finder in Mac OS confuses me and when I save a file I can't often tell whether I saved it to the computer or the cloud or some weird limbo area I can't see. And I hated the fact that you can't close an app on the Macbook by clicking on the red X-- it's still running in the background. But because I couldn't find a Windows machine as well built as the Macbooks, I put up with it. I'm so glad to have this machine now. The taller screen is great for my writing, and has beautiful colors, easy on my older eyes even with the resolution lowered. I am a big stickler regarding keyboards--and the feel of this one is perfect- even better than the Magic Keyboard on the 2020 M1 Macbook Air I sold. Some have described this keyboard as mushy. I don't feel that-- I feel it's got just the right amount of comfortable feedback that makes you WANT to type on it. And the fact that it's backlit is the icing on the cake. The laptop is quiet-- I don't hear the fan much except if I'm charging it and also downloading programs at the same time. The 15-inch size is perfect for my large hands-- they aren't cramped or make me feel like my left wrist is going to fall off the end of the wrist rest, like some other 15.6 inch laptops with number pads. I do miss having a separate number pad, but it's ok-- Macbooks don't have it either.I got the Microsoft Surface 4 rather than the Surface 5 -- I wanted the one with the Ryzen 7 processor because battery life is more important to me, and Best Buy is still selling them new. But performance is great-- never had any lagging with any of the programs that I run. I'm not a gamer so having integrated graphics is fine for me too.Seems with the Surface Laptop Microsoft made the laptop with the hardware meant to showcase the Windows experience, where the hardware works well with the software and doesn't get in the way. So I just want to say, Good Job, Microsoft. This is how Windows computers ought to be. Other Windows laptop manufacturers can take a page from your book because some of us DON'T want to compromise. If I find I don't use the Macbooks any more they'll go up for sale, as I may be back to Windows for good. If you want a Windows machine and you can afford a Surface Laptop-- figure out which one you need according to the specs, and buy it. You won't be disappointed.
I LOVE this machine! My older Dell laptop (also a Best Buy purchase) was stolen in San Francisco along with my backpack and some other items. I had to replace my work laptop no matter what so I immediately had gone back to Best Buy to check what was newly available and I came across this Microsoft surface unit although in a different color. I love it for its size and light weight. It does lack an extra USB slot Bar on the flipside is very svelte using only a USB-C charger port which allows me to only carry a minimal charge cable which I love. The keyboard types nicely and the trackpad has a very nice action to it. I’ve been using it for about a month but I’m def keeping it. I love the color and look and the touch screen was a must. A friend told me that Apple laptops don’t use touchscreen features which is pretty crazy to me. The touchscreen has been invaluable in instances when I’m on a plane trip and space is minimum.I am in love with my computer and highly recommend the surface range. Go check out the light weight for yourself.
The trackpad is stiff, the design has somewhat of a cheap feeling (mostly plastic), and the charger feels weird. It’s hard to plug in due to its awkward shape. I use it for work and it’s gets the job done but it’s not something that screams desirable for personal use. Also the keyboard does not feel very high quality (my “O” key was super stuff when I first got it, but I think it was abused by previous owner). So in conclusion, it’s an okay laptop but it doesn’t make me feel special. Comparing this product to a MacBook Pro is not even fair although they have same product placement in market. I guess if you are obsessed with touchscreen computer, it’s a better option than Mac but I honestly don’t see anyone tapping on laptops so I don’t know why Microsoft pushes ... MoreThe trackpad is stiff, the design has somewhat of a cheap feeling (mostly plastic), and the charger feels weird. I had no idea I could buy this laptop through Walmart before I checked it. I liked the deal that Microsoft offered online on this Surface4, but they couldn't deliver to me quickly. Best Buy on the other hand could ship it faster, but their pricing was higher. Walmart offered the same sale price as buying from Microsoft directly but with faster two day delivery. I was amazed and very pleased with the pricing and quick delivery through Walmart! Just made another electronics purchase from Walmart online after this and was just as satisfied. This laptop is the closest thing you'll get to a mac without being a mac. Build quality is superb, only thing I wish I had was a slightly bigger trackpad. I had a dell 9510 but had two defective units so I gave up on getting one and started looking for something else. People like to get caught up in ram and performance, etc. Honestly, for everyday use you'll never be able to tell the difference. I mostly (90%) use it for watching movies and surfing the net. I have the AMD version 8GB. Laptop works great, can't tell a difference in speed at all. This laptop is super light weight compared to other 15' laptops. I love the 3x2 ratio. Charges up super quick and then battery really does last long. I'm probably getting 12 hours on a full charge and it seems to take 1 hour to get to 90% (if you're not using the laptop while it's charging). The specs may not be as impressive, but do I regret my purchase.....HECK NO!
I love and adore this laptop so freaking much. My previous laptop was a HP Pavillion 15" and this one is above and beyond miles better! The speakers are really nice and clear even at the highest volume level. While this laptop is not cheap; Best Buy often has discounts making this laptop more affordable than buying it directly from Microsoft. If you are debating between buying this and the Surface 5 I would recommend you get the Surface 4 instead. The specifications are nearly identical but the 4 has better battery life is lighter than the 5.
