If I could rate lower than 1 I would! This laptop is a piece of junk and Microsoft, liars and thieves. I got this laptop on 2/21/2021, as a replacement for a Surface 2, the battery went bad after the charger went bad. I had purchased that one on 10/6/2019. Well the first day I used the new laptop, I only got 5 hours battery time before I had to recharge it, instead of the 10 advertised. I had the geek squad assess it remotely and was told there was nothing they could do, as the software was okay and they were not allowed to open the laptop to work on the hardware. They told me too take the laptop in to Best Buy and have the technicians there look at it. They told me too take the laptop in to Best Buy and have the technicians there look at it. I did, they ran a Battery Diagnosis test the report of which revealed the battery acting very extreme while charging and while in use. I contacted Microsoft and spoke with Nicolas. We were on the phone for almost 2 hours. During that time he did everything including having me upload my receipt for the 2/21/2021 purchase, giving me a case number, and set me up to get a "BRAND NEW OUT OF THE BOX" replacement, Nicolas's exact words. I explained to him that I could not afford to be without a laptop for 10 days, as this is the only laptop I have I have no second computer, but would complete the replacement as soon as I could get free time from work. We discussed completing everything on 4/2/2021 when I have vacation time off. Well, I got some time off sooner, and now Microsoft is singing a new tune. They are only willing to send me a REFURBISHED laptop. This in exchange for a laptop I bought brand new 3 weeks ago. The battery is clearly bad and they are taking advantage of me. I am an independent contractor and work from my home. I sacrificed and spent more money than I usually would have for this laptop that was rated at the top of the game back in 2019, when I initially invested in a laptop to run my business. Now I'm stuck with a laptop I have to recharge several times per day. This is worse than the one I turned in 3 weeks ago. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. Is this how the company makes it's money. Ripping off their customers. Total scum bucks!!!!! By the way BEST BUY, not Microsoft, replaced the laptop 3 weeks ago because I bought an extended warranty from them in 2019 when I purchased the original Surface.

Simply put, this is the practical and stylish PC that we've all hoped for. It is as beautiful as anything from Apple, as productive as anything from Dell, as capable at casual gaming as anything from ASUS and overall simply pleasing. I say this, because these are all the other computers in my home. The Surface Laptop 3 is my wife's work computer, and it excels for this purpose. The screen is the absolute best for real world productivity. Word documents and Excel spreadsheets display on this aspect ratio much better than anything made for movies and games. The speakers must be implementing some kind of magic, as they are hidden under the keyboard, yet sound better than any other computer we own. The keyboard is much more pleasing to use than our Dell, ASUS, and especially that crazy Apply keyboard. (Though, I have a high-end HP Chromebook keyboard that surprisingly comes close.) The track pad is perfectly gauged with the default sensitivity. We've used the built in camera and mic extensively for Web-based meetings (Zoom, Go-to-meeting, Webex) and I'm happy to report that the video and mic quality matches or exceeds what we see anyone else has built in their PC. The battery life is amazing. With real-world work related use, my wife is getting 2-3 days of use without charging. That's at a few hours of MS Office and Google web app use per day (and facebook when she sneaks that in). The magnetic charge port is a winner as well. Several times our dog has tripped over the power chord, and while the chord popped lose and went flying, the laptop never moved. It does exactly what it is made to do! The engineers deserve an award for this one. While my son likes his loud fan, short battery, high end gaming ASUS ROG, and my daughter loves the fact that there is an apple on her computer, I have to say, if I'm buying a straight forward, dependable, VERY capable computer for anyone doing actual work on their machine, I'd recommend the Surface laptop above all others.

My favorite laptop; a workhorse. Sounds great too!

The glass trackpad is the best I have ever used; large and perfect sounds and travel. The keyboard is also the best I have ever experienced; quit and just the right amount of travel; butterfly-style keys that are backlit in three brightnesses. Speaking of brightness, I returned the i5 due to the display auto-brightness being all over the place; this one hits it just right and is not jumpy like the i5 version. The sound is almost better than the Yoga 91. I placed a tempered glass protector over the screen from Megoo that fits perfection to prevent the screen cracking issues folks have encountered; it went on easily and it is almost impossible to notice unless you are looking for it; it does not hamper closure whatsoever. With the lack of bloatware, the SL3 runs seamlessly. The fan was cooking at times on the i5 but not here at all. I bought a Surface Pen to use in case I need to draw a diagram for a patient in my work. It may come in handy. Do I miss the fold in half mode, you ask? Not nearly as much as I thought. This is a keeper!

Replaced my Macbook Pro

I purchased this laptop during Black Friday of 2019 to replace my same-year MacBook Pro. I am a pro-level user, so I opted for the i7 with the upgraded memory to suit my needs. The biggest issue I face with the laptop is while using Adobe Lightroom the laptop quickly becomes hot and the CPU thermal throttles, reducing its performance to the point that I need to wait for the computer to finish loading before I can continue on with the next task. While this does not affect the laptop and I enjoy the design, it is something you don’t expect in a $1,000+ laptop. One of the benefits is that the trackpad is one of the best trackpads I have used in a laptop and once one learns the multi-touch functions it is very convenient to use.Looking back at it now, I should have waited for the Surface Book 3 or stayed with my previous laptop.

Sleek and compact, but not quite Macbook Pro power

I did return this laptop. That being said, I was initially looking for another laptop to replace my aging Macbook Pro. As a photographer, I wanted a laptop that could be similar to a Macbook Pro, but on a Windows platform. I did a test of Lightroom rendering previews for 4000 images in RAW format. While TDP is not necessarily an indication of performance, it does mean there is more headroom.- Microsoft appears to be using 2 different manufacturers for the SSD - Hynix and Toshiba. The Hynix is the one that was on mine, and apparently is the slower of the two. That being said, this laptop is really great in several aspects:- Windows Hello is essentially Face ID for your laptop. So quick.- Standby/Resume is super quick- The speakers are tuned for vocals, and are underneath the keyboard. So playing music or videos, will be more "pronounced", and you will feel as if the speaker is in front of you, instead of on the sides like most laptops.- The keyboard! No super flat keys with zero travel like the Macbook Pros!- USB-C for charging is great and convenient.Overall, the Surface Laptop 3 is a great all around performer for daily use. Just bear in mind you may need to be patient for any CPU intensive tasks.

Surface 3 Goodness

My wife wanted a new computer as our 10 year old HP has been driving her nuts just as it is outdated and slow compared to computers nowadays. I actually sent her to Best Buy to pick out her own computer because it was “hers.” She was dead set on picking up a Mac Book when she left the house. Once she got to Best Buy she realized how great this computer can be. She lives the touch screen as well. It may have been the one aspect that out her over the edge on this one. I have a touch screen for my work computer and have shown her how easily they can be manipulated to speed up multiple actions. She has taken to the computer and loves how light it is as well. One of the things that I can even admit about our old HP is how touchy the touchpad was. One of the things that I can even admit about our old HP is how touchy the touchpad was. There were times that we’d be typing and our hand accidentally hit it and we’d click somewhere inside the document this editing the wrong portion and creating a headache of extra work trying to fix those mistakes. This touchpad is very response but through our use we haven’t not even close to that being an issue. I love her choice and this was definitely a welcome addition in our house as now I can also use this computer for my work purposes as well.

The portability is amazing & faster than expected
7 October 2019

The surface go is amazing for what it is. I am a student who exchanged my Macbook 12 inch, and i picked up the surface go as the Macbook just didn't have the features I truly needed.First of all, the ultra portable form factor is awesome, and I also bought the keyboard cover and pen to go along with it and it works much better than I had expected it to work. My desktop is what I use for speed, power, and gaming so my expectations for this little thing weren't too high, but in high performance mode it runs very well. Using the windows ink features with the surface pen has so far made things easier for me in the classroom and I am taking digital notes for the first time in my life. The drawing features and highlighting tools really do make productivity tools feel fresh and it is like I am learning something new within windows for the first time in a while. It just feels like I have more options to do my work than the macbook ever allowed me to have. This device IS NOT for everybody. Do not buy it if you expect it to run any games or any other super heavy workloads. It is perfect for someone else like me, who wants something ultra portable and decently fast for the price, while still being a very high quality product.

WAS a great laptop...
5 October 2021

Was a great laptop... Fast, sleek and reliable. I say "was" because 2 weeks ago, after Microsoft released a software update. My laptop is now a useless metal brick. There seems to be a known issue with the recent Surface OTA update, as my Surface Laptop was not the only unit to experience this issue. Unit froze after update. I have tried all possible avenues - hard reset, etc... Nothing has worked.Since unit was already out of warranty (ended March 2021) I decided to take unit apart to see if any interior connections might have come loose. Nothing is physically wrong with unit and unit is new inside, which confirms that the recent software update caused my laptop to be DOA.Since it is out of mfg warranty, Microsoft wants me to spend at least $400 sending it back ... MoreWas a great laptop... This is not my first surface device, as I have had 2 surface pro's previously, with no issues. Now I am left with a useless laptop, not even 2 years old that originally cost me $1400.Time to look beyond Surface devices if you want reliable products that are supported by their manufacturer, when they cause the issue that damaged your unit.

Wifi issues ruin it
1 March 2020

Before purchasing, please, please PLEASE google 'surface 3 laptop wifi issues'. It's a known issue and seems like it will never be fixed. The only way around it I found was to turn on airplane mode before closing the lid so that the driver wouldn't know I put the laptop to sleep. But if your connection drops for any reason, you'll have to toggle airplane mode again to reset it. For a laptop this expensive, we should not have to deal with issues like this. If it were a $300 laptop, sure. But not $1000. Also, the machine runs hot. REALLY hot. My macbook air can sit on the bed while I stream netflix and the bottom stays totally cool to the touch, and the fan doesn't have to come on. This one's fan goes crazy after just a few minutes and feels extremely hot on the bottom even when I have it sitting on a table. When it does windows updates I have to literally open my window and set the laptop on the ledge so it gets cooled by the winter air. It's that hot.Long story short: I returned it.The touch screen was beautiful and amazing and even works with my HP pen. so I was really unhappy that the experience was ruined by these two major issues. So close to being a great laptop.

Worth the extra bucks for better build quality
30 December 2020

I chose this computer and spent the extra bucks mainly for the lighter weight and better build quality than the typical plastic-y laptops all competing for best value. I bought the black i7 for me and the pink/sandstone i5 for the wife.Note that certain colors like black, silver, sandstone have an all-metal build, while other colors like blue for some reason still have that cheap plastic "Alcantera" material around the keyboard. That is surprising since even the new Surface Laptop Go has a metal build even in blue. The keyboard has a nice feel, with a crisp, light touch, that my hands took a little time to adjust to from my previous, low-end Thinkpad.I mainly use for Internet and Office-type productivity, no video stuff. I have not noticed any heating, even when its on my lap. So far I do not recall the fan ever coming on either. For my uses, I am not sure the i7 is noticeably better than my wife's i5, but since it is my main computer I wanted to get the higher-end processor just in case. The charger is proprietary, which sometimes can be inconvenient in some products, except this one is particularly easy to connect with a sort of magnetic clip-on that guides it easily into connection. This screen works really well with the Microsoft Surface Pen (sold separately). That is handy in case our kid wants/need to use our computers for school projects, etc.I have not had reason to turn the volume up high, but the speakers and sound quality have been more than adequate for something with a slim build like this.
