Technivorm Moccamaster is an excellent coffee maker. I makes fantastic coffee (probably close to the best possible for a simple drip style unit). HOWEVER... the price! How does one justify $300+ when there are so many cheaper options? If one of the following describes you, steer away from this coffee maker: you ... Just want something to make your Folgers, Want something fancy (expensive) to keep up with the Joneses, Want cutting edge "technology," Want lots of "features," Don't take good care of your possessions, Don't keep things for many years, Want the best "deal" (not necessarily "value" which is more complicated) possible, Make coffee only occasionally (not every week), or of course Want a machine that will make hot chocolate, chai anything, cappuccino, or ... MoreTechnivorm Moccamaster is an excellent coffee maker. This does one thing, simply. It is very well made, in Europe, by well paid employees, and designed to last a lifetime if properly maintained. If it breaks, it is designed to be able to be FIXED with widely available parts unlike nearly every Chinese made small appliance on the market today. These qualities make for a great product but at a relatively high price. Now that we have that out of the way, here is my review of this product after a half year of use: I like my coffee flavorful and strong. I typically make one pot every couple of days, saving the unused coffee in the fridge to be used for iced coffee later. I believe it is advisable to make exactly one full pot at a time for best results. One pot is about 48oz or 6c. It says 10 cups on the water reservoir, so they must think each "cup" (of coffee) is about 4.8oz. There is also what appears to be liter measures, but I question the accuracy there. You certainly can put in less water and try to make a partial pot, but I have reservations about the quality of the results. At any rate, you get about 6c. of coffee for a pot. I'm always amazed and impressed how fast and quiet it works. Granted, my comparison is to my old, cheap, $12.99 coffee maker that gurgled and carried on for what seemed like forever. I love the Moccamaster for it's quiet, smooth operation. Cleanup for me is to simply dispense with the #4 cone style filter and spent grounds (compostable), rinse the detachable parts, of which there are several, and leave to air dry. Not the easiest cleanup, but not bad at all

Water temp. is not constant or correct. Unused water stays inside the machine and first dose of water is always cold. Plastic filter container can only fit up to 4 without overflowing, despite the water container having water up to 10. Stupid lid design for the glass carafe - it is too flat to handle faster water flow. The carafe lid will make coffee overflow to the counter. But the worst part: there is no way to brew stronger coffee with this ancient disaster. All you receive is a weak cup of coffee regardless of beans quality. So you waste your morning and premium freshly ground bens with a badly designed C-maker.

Yes, it's expensive; but it makes great coffee.I decided to buy the Moccamaster after tasting coffee at a friend's house. Honestly, I can taste the difference - the flavor is cleaner and I notice less of what I think of as acidity.Design is, of course, subjective. Personally, I love the way it looks. I chose the brushed stainless steel finish and it matches my other appliances perfectly. My only criticism would be that I am less than delighted with the quality of the plastic pieces used for the covers over the water reservoir and filter basket. They work fine and fit as they should, but they don't look and feel like they should be on something that costs this much.Overall, I am very pleased. I did a lot of homework on this one. I wanted simple easy to use but I also wanted coffee that tastes good. I originally wanted a coffee maker and grinder, what I found is if it will fail it will. So then I went on a quest to fine out what makes coffee taste better even if you have a great grinder you still need a maker that cooks it well. Right, makes sense. I watched many multiple coffee pots from a guy on YouTube that tried just about every brand out there from inexpensive to outrageously priced. This was one of the top contenders because it kept the water coming out at a consistent 195-205 plus it showered the darn beans lol ok ok but really there’s a difference. It made a huge difference in flavor from the same coffee I’ve been using all along. So if you’re in ... MoreI did a lot of homework on this one. So if you’re in doubt don’t be just get this one and get a great burr grinder and grind fresh beans always for best taste.
Finally, my quest to make the perfect cup of coffee at home is over! I've tried Krups, Braun, Cuisinart, Breville, DeLonghi, Aeropress, French press, Nespresso, Keurig, Hario, grind-and-brews, automatic and manual espresso machines, and have never had coffee like the Moccamaster makes.I had never bought one before because I thought spending that much money should come with a lot of bells and whistles. After that thinking resulted in too many costly mistakes, I finally, FINALLY, decided to get this Moccamaster.I think the beauty of the machine lies in its simplicity. It has the patience to make the perfect pour-over pot that I rarely had for making a single pour-over cup. I use the most freshly-roasted coffee beans I can find, ground to the correct grind (medium-coarse), with the recommended water-to-grounds ratio and the result is consistently the best coffee I've ever been able to make at home.Part of the problem has been that my husband and I rarely agree on coffee. That we both love the coffee from this machine is a minor miracle itself. I'm so happy I finally went with Moccamaster.
I have used a Moccamaster for years and chose to buy a new one only to get a color change. This newer version, however, has a different design for the carafe. The glass feels less sturdy, and replacing it is such a tight fit that you have to get the angle correct to return it securely to the warming plate. I often have to jiggle the carafe to get that angle, which increases the likelihood that I will break it one day. The lid is now hinged to the carafe handle, making it awkward to empty the pot. Even the plastic holder for the coffee and filter does not glide in smoothly as the one in my old Moccamaster did. Overall, I feel like this redesign of the old model sought to reduce costs and assumed customers would tolerate the flaws needed to achieve the price point. ... MoreI have used a Moccamaster for years and chose to buy a new one only to get a color change. I will not buy a Moccamaster again.
I am happy with the item itself, but I would not recommend making the purchase from William Sonoma. They ship this expensive coffee maker with a glass carafe in the store packaging, which is incredibly thin and offers no protection. There is no bubble wrap, foam padding, paper padding or anything. Just 2-4 millimeters of cardboard protecting the unit. The first one we got was broken on arrival, which, of course it was. The replacement also came a litte beat up, but not smashed. We waited a month for it at this point so we decided to keep the second one. If you want to purchase this coffee maker, I'd suggest picking it up in store or finding a vendor that can afford a shipping carton.
The actual device is beautiful. But I bought this as a gift for my family for Christmas during the Black Friday sale, which took a hundred dollars off. As you might expect, they wanted to swap the color right after Christmas. So we went into the store to simply change the color -- and they wouldn't honor the sales price! First they "returned" the original Moccamaster, then when they rang up the new color for online shipping, they simply said the full price. No, "by the way, as a warning, you're going to have to pay the difference," or "before you make this exchange, you should know." Nope, just rang it up full price. After complaining, they said there was nothing they could do. No sympathy, no effort to make it right, just complete indifference to the huge price ... MoreThe actual device is beautiful. So I can't recommend anyone buy these online at Williams and Sonoma. The service is just atrocious if you need to do an exchange.
This famed coffee maker gets the water temperature in the optimal range and brews coffee in the optimal time, but it still won't make perfect coffee unless YOU get the grind just right with a medium-coarse grind. I bought a Eureka Mignon Filtro grinder and together these make perfect coffee, since it's a grinder optimized for filtered coffee (drip, French press, etc.) and grinds uniformly without too many "fines" (fine grinds that leave an over-extracted taste in the coffee). That's all this coffee maker does and it does it well. What I don't like about it is that the carafe and plastic parts can't go in the dishwasher. They're quick to clean up with a soapy sponge, and you only need to clean the carafe, carafe lid, and filter basket, not the other two lids (water ... MoreThis famed coffee maker gets the water temperature in the optimal range and brews coffee in the optimal time, but it still won't make perfect coffee unless YOU get the grind just right with a medium-coarse grind. That's all this coffee maker does and it does it well. What I don't like about it is that the carafe and plastic parts can't go in the dishwasher. They're quick to clean up with a soapy sponge, and you only need to clean the carafe, carafe lid, and filter basket, not the other two lids (water reservoir and filter basket lid) but in California's ongoing drought situation, this uses A LOT of water. There's also no way to clean inside the funnel on the carafe lid until you occasionally soak in the sink with a product like Cleancaf or Durgol. Beyond that this is easy to clean and descale and it performs well. And if anything goes wrong with it even after warranty the company does a flat fee repair for $59 that even includes the shipping. Cosmetically I think with other competitors now going after the same coffee association rating that this machine boasted long before most, I think they're going to have to change the design to make a more upscale looking brew basket cover at the very least, and I look forward to seeing what they come up with. One final note, this is the first coffee maker ever that has a carafe that doesn't drip when I pour. It's perfect. If you have a cheap grinder you may not like the coffee this produces because you just simply may be used to non-optimal coffee. If it's a little too strong, cut the beans back by 5 grams or change the grind a little coarser. I use an OXO small digital scale to weigh the beans, then grind just what I need every time. Would I buy this again, yes. If I were the owner of the company, would I be working on a revised version with the improvements mentioned as others are catching up to this? Very much so.
