Bulletproof Coffee Grinder - last a lifetime

I ordered the KM5 in June, 2023 shortly after it came out. Backordered, I had to wait but it was well worth it. This KM5 perfectly matches my Moccamaster KBG coffee maker. I weigh the beans in the glass cup then dump them the whole beans into the hopper the night before. In the morning I only need to press and hold the button to grind them in the morning. Whole beans won't degrade overnight but ground coffee will. Some have complained about the noise. It's a coffee grinder, it makes noise. I don't know what to say except that it does not bother me in the slightest. I have had cheap grinders over the years and they made more noise, as I recall. Well, I think that is a very good safety feature. When you look into the clear plastic hopper and see the whirring blades pulverize coffee beans into a consistent powder I'm comforted knowing it will be difficult for someone to stick their fingers to clear something while operating it.The coffee comes out in a consistent grind. Beautiful, actually. There is a finely machined aluminium grind adjustment knob. Truthfully, I set it to 5 1/2 when I bought it and haven't touched it since. For those who care, the night before I measure out 55 grams of whole beans and fill the water reservoir to the 8 cup line on the side of the reservoir. That's 8 six ounce standard coffee cups, not the standard 8 ounce cups you use when measuring cooking ingredients.I highly recommend, along with the matching coffee maker.

Love this grinder. It was time to replace my capresso conical burr grinder and I shopped around and stumbled upon the KM5. I have a green moccamaster kbgv and it's my daily coffee maker. My experience with technivorm products have been exceptional so I had high expectations for this grinder. Being a flat burr the grinds are extremely consistent and make for a beautiful cup of coffee. I didn't expect a difference between the conical burrs and flat but I was dead wrong. Even the wife has no complaints and she sees herself as a coffee snob. My only 2 complaints is the power switch that you have to hold. I would like for it to have maybe a timer or something so I could prepare other things waiting for grind. Not a deal breaker by any means and just for aesthetic purposes. The price point is great for a flat burr machine.

Looking forward to this being the last grinder I purchase, if only for a long time.

Ive had the Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 for over a month now and I am very pleased overall.Like most of Technivorms products its built like a tank. From what I understand this is built by or using the same burrs as an Eureka Grinder. For me I find the KM5 quiter then my Cuisinart Grinder and monumentally better! The weight and heft of the KM5 gives and overall impression of extreme quality. Its very fast in grinding up the beans into the glass cup.The only negative thus far is the static! I love Technivorms products, but I cannot deny the high amount of static from this grinder. Its actually has more static then my old Cuisnart.Technivorm says there is a "Static- Reducing Dispensing" spout..........I would love to see the White Paper(if it exists) on this ... MoreIve had the Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 for over a month now and I am very pleased overall.Like most of Technivorms products its built like a tank. Finally...It's about time. But still a bit disappointing.
3 May 2023

Please see attached photos of the 2 different MoccaMaster grinders we have purchased in the past 3 years. The only thing missing when I bought my wife a MoccaMaster brewer 3 years ago was a decent grinder to match the superb quality of the brewer. Instead, I paid $200 for a 2nd rate metal disc grinder, which was the best grinder MoccaMaster made at that time. It is noisy, messy, wasteful, and produces a very inconsistent grind quality; it's everything you love to hate about a coffee grinder. However, the new KM5 Burr Grinder solves all those mechanical problems. The KM5 is quiet, quick, clean and efficient. There are no more piles of fine coffee powder mixed in with the fresh grinds, or piles of half-ground beans left behind in the hopper. However, the new KM5 Burr Grinder solves all those mechanical problems. The KM5 is quiet, quick, clean and efficient. There are no more piles of fine coffee powder mixed in with the fresh grinds, or piles of half-ground beans left behind in the hopper. And there is no more static electricity to make cleanup nearly impossible like it was with the first grinder (see photo). The KM5 grind is very consistent, and lends that extra bit of perfection to the perfect cup of coffee. ...and this is as it should be for a brewer as good as the MoccaMaster KB. The best coffee maker money can buy waited a long time for a decent paired grinder, and now it's finally here. It just feels like a terrible waste of money to spend $600 on 2 MoccaMaster grinders in 3 years, just trying to find a decent matching grinder. However, MoccaMaster still didn’t get the color selection right to match our beautiful red brewer. The old grinder’s color options didn’t offer one to match the red brewer, and neither does the new $350 KM5 grinder. Thank you for a well built grinder, but please pay more attention to the details going forward. Attention to detail is the #1 reason why MoccaMaster customers pay big bucks for the best home brewer money can buy. We expected MoccaMaster to upgrade to color-matching grinders after years of developing the KM5, and after we spent so much money on Technivorm equipment. So...including the KB brewer, and after buying 100% brand name accessories, we have spent a total of about $1,050.00 on MoccaMaster equipment in 3 years. That is a lot of money to spend on mismatched equipment, where color was an afterthought yet again, rather than an intentional design element of the new KM5 grinders. I'm a retired engineer and I expect a bit more attention to detail from a company with MoccaMaster's reputation for fine European engineering.

Great Grinder….But…
14 April 2023

This is my 3rd grinder (all different brands) and quickly became my “go to” for coffee brewed in my Moccamaster or French press. I’m very impressed with the consistency of the grind. I thought the coffee I brewed using one of the other brands was quite good and dialed in, but the KM5 is better. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do very well. It is, however, noisier than the others and, most disappointing to me, rather messy. I don’t see any signs of an anti-static system. Grounds coat the glass container and rubber cap. One of my other grinders has anti-static capabilities feeding into a metal container and is very clean with no mess to clean up. I will keep using the KM5 because of the grind consistency, but if you have an anti-static system in the chute, it isn’t working. Very disappointing in that regard.

Inconsistent, poorly designed, Warranty is useless
4 October 2023

I have owned this machine for about 5 months now and I wish I had not purchased this. Highly inconsistent grind size resulting in exceptionally poor coffee. Tremendous amount of retention and chaff in the chute after almost every grind session (see photos of chaff after grinding 75 grams). Additionally, there is a fair bit of popcorning which further exacerbates the inconsistency of the grind size. The machine is quite loud as well. As a result of these clear manufacturing and design defects, I asked Moccamaster - kindly - to take this unit back under their warranty since it does not work as advertised. I have since replaced the Moccamaster with a Fellows Opus grinder which provides consistent grind size once calibrated and seasoned. As a moccamaster coffee brewer owner (of more than 10 years), I am quite surprised at both the pour quality of this machine, lack of functionality (as advertised), and Moccamaster's unwillingness to stand behind their product.

5 stars for the design and simplicity.1 star for functionality. I really wanted to like this machine and was so excited when it arrived.A few things that would make me re-purchase this grinder:1. Add preset grinding settings so you don’t have to sit there with your hand pressed on a small ergonomically unfriendly little button. otherwise relocate the button to the top so you can more easily grip the machine while it’s grinding.2. The grinder is powerful. So powerful that when grinding it vibrates across your counter.3. Lastly, the container is difficult to read the measurements and static is an issue (which I never realized was a thing until I used this grinder). In the meantime I’ve gone back to my old grinder (which cost $60 and has all the functionality I noted above).

More clarity in the resulting cups

First, a bit of backstory, make yourself a cup because it's gonna be long.I had a baratza encore for many years but it failed 6 months ago due to a failure that had to do with the motor gear. I realized it was time to try something else. I considered fellow products (both the opus and ode gen 2) as well as the eureka mignon filtro and while i was doing my research i was first unaware that technivorm had released their first burr grinder last summer. I almost went for the ode 2 because having a step-less design like on the eureka made me feel like it would be difficult to know where to go in order to dial in my beans. I almost went for the ode 2 because having a step-less design like on the eureka made me feel like it would be difficult to know where to go in order to dial in my beans. This is where the km5 comes in.You see, i was always a fan of the moccamaster products, i started with the cup one and recently got the revised select model. They are built like a tank and the 5 years warranty is a rarity in this day and age. Most appliances are made in china and only come with a 1 or 2 years warranty, maybe 3 if the company feels like it but that's it. And many times, the customer support is non-existent or downright awful when it comes to get support outside of the warranty. Well technivorm has a reputation of charging a flat fee for any repairs needed, even if you are out of warranty. This alone, was enough to encourage me to support them. After a lot of consideration i went for this one, it is basically an eureka mignon filtro but with a step-less wheel limited to 9 settings, optimized for drip and things like french press or cold brew. It is really not hard to dial in, i was able to brew an almost perfect cup on my first try.Grounds are consistent and don't have that many fines, it was a small issue with the encore: while it was a good budget grinder, it had a tendency to have more fines. This lead to less than ideal performance for anything other than drip or finer settings (like aeropress), coarser grind size had lots of fine and un-even boulders.Cups are CLEAN, there is actual clarity in the brews, it shocked me because i was so used to my coffee being muddy and muted with a thicker mouthfeel. The flat burrs don't produce the same texture of brewed coffee but it pays off with clarity, i was able to discern the multiple stages of the tasting notes.I wouldn't say conical burrs are bad, but to me, the flat burrs produce a better cup because of that clarity. Overall, i'd say jump on it if you are on the fence, technivorm is a company that has proven its reliability both with the quality of the components and its after sale service. You also get to encourage a company that pays its employees fairly despite still making everything (well at least the majority) in-house with European components. The higher price tag scares, but it's necessary when you resist manufacturing your things in china.

The new Moccamaster KM5 Coffee Grinder
30 December 2023

I was very excited to see the KM5 hit the market this past year. I waited to see Black Friday sale prices before I made the purchase. Have now had a few days and have ran several pots of coffee through the Moccamaster with coffee grounds from the KM5. Currently, I have mixed emotions on the new machine. The static issue is a big one! Very messy! Their claimed static prevention system doesn't seem effective! Its winter hear and the house humidity is typically below 50% and maybe it will be better as temps warm, and the humidity stays at or above 50%. The hard rubber top and the glass collection jar are big time messy! I had to do some dialing in of the setting knob to create a good cup of coffee. I waited to see Black Friday sale prices before I made the purchase. Have now had a few days and have ran several pots of coffee through the Moccamaster with coffee grounds from the KM5. Its winter hear and the house humidity is typically below 50% and maybe it will be better as temps warm, and the humidity stays at or above 50%. The hard rubber top and the glass collection jar are big time messy! I had to do some dialing in of the setting knob to create a good cup of coffee. For the American coffee palate, I agree somewhere between 4 to 5 3/4 is going to be your setting range. I've leaning towards a 5 1/2 setting. Just an opinion, but if you drink mostly full medium, medium-dark to dark roasted coffees this machine will likely fit your needs nicely! If you tend to make coffee from the newer style of true medium, medium-light to light roast beans, you make struggle to find you taste level! That assumes you've paired the KM5 with the cone shaped filter basket machines such as the Moccamaster. Mine is a Moccamaster Select. The Moccamaster coffee maker, I've found to be a very finicky, machine and requires a lot of trial and error in dialing it into your particular taste! Flat bottom coffee filter basket type machines seem to be more forgiving in simply making consistently good coffee. It's capable, it's just finicky and unforgiving if you just throw grounds in the basket and push the on button expecting great coffee results. I'm anticipating I'll pursue research Utube video's on how to cut down on the static to reduce the mess! The pre-wetting of the beans with a spoon handle doesn't seem to tame the beast! And I don't relish exposing the Burr Ginder blades to moisture every time I make a pot. I've attempted to be brutely honest here, in my assessments. If anyone agrees and have found solutions to the issues I've raised, please post you finding so we all can benefit together. The Moccamaster product are bullet-proof long-lasting products which I early love, but they do require a lot of attention to details to create good consistent coffee results. Hope you find this helpful!!!!Cons: KM5 - The static generated, produces a lot of messy grounds to be cleaned up after each grind. Maybe not the best choice for today's new lighter roasted coffee beans. Difficult to produce a mellow smooth coffee with a great after taste. Coffee can taste flat! Difficult to bring out fruitier flavor highlights.Machine Usage: Daily to twice daily.Pros: Very well built and should last for many years. Seems better suited for the darker roasted beans. Full-Medium, Medium-Dark to Dark Roast coffee beans. Full bodied rich flavor.
