These endearing creatures were made into comic strips and TV cartoons as well as the original series of nine books, and even today there is a Moomin theme park in Finland. Jansson died in 2001, her books by then translated into 45 languages; in 2017 she was honoured in two London exhibitions and an outdoor Moomin adventure event in Kew Gardens.
