Unless I have done something wrong with the assembly and placement of the black silicone gasket, my experience is that this unit is messy. Some of the coffee grounds always fall behind and to the side of the ground coffee bin.Furthermore, the ground coffee bin plastic always has a static charge and this makes fine coffe stick to it. So it is not a simple job to empty and clean. The unit and bin needs to fully wiped out with a damp cloth. It may well be a cheap entry into burr coffee gronders, but the hassle of cleaning up makes me tend to grind a larger quantity of beans at one time (say +500 gram) rather than grind in smaller batches for each use.

I bought this through AB and have been very happy. I use it to grind for an aeropress and a stovetop mini espresso and its perfect for purpose. I get decent consistent coffee from both. A definite step up from a manual grinder. Its not noisy. I am not sure where that concern comes from! And it is very compact(excellent for apartments/small kitchens). The one question I think every one asks...can it grind for my espresso machine?Well the answer I think is yes and no. This grinder definitely grinds as fine as espresso grounds, you just won't have as much fun getting it spot on everytime as a more expensive grinder. I think its better than no grinder at all for that scenario.(eg preground beans).

This grinder is certainly a reliable workhorse for the home coffee aficionado. It produces good grinding consistency for a $200 machine. I use it for all types of manual brew at home (V60, French press, etc.) and it never disappoints. It's very easy to clean and low maintenance as well. The rubber gasket looks a little bit flimsy but it looks easily replaceable and cheap. I have to say there is nothing like the smell of freshly ground coffee beans, specially at home. You can tell worlds apart the difference compared to pre-ground coffee from the shops. For people that complaint about it being loud, there is no such thing as a "quiet" coffee grinder, they're all noisy even the 4k ones, so that's just life.

Compared to the cheaper units - this was a surprise. It really does make it easier to make great consistent silky milk. Easy to pour. Great quality. Recommended.
This is my first electric grinder after using only hand grinders. Very good ones, but there's only so much hand grinding you can have the stamina to do in a day! This machine is a saviour! It has a wide range of grind sizes, isn't deafeningly loud (like some others I've seen), produces quite consistent grind size and grinds at a good rate - slow enough to not heat up but fast enough to not have to wait very long for a couple of doses worth to grind.I've used it for various filter size grinds (Aeropress, french press and course cold brew) and have gotten great results. I haven't yet used it for espresso but the grind does seem to go into that range on it's maximum setting which I think will work perfectly fine unless you're really meticulous about your espresso ... MoreThis is my first electric grinder after using only hand grinders. Really poor grinder IMO. Surprised how poorly thought out this was - the Sunbeam I had killed it - putting it together was painful: fitting gaskets?? not being able to remove the grinder burr? trying to line up plastic indicators and rotate it around for it to work? Uh huh. Precision gear it is not.But really what was the killer for me was that it completely clogged on the third grind. Yup third grind. The other bugbear - and this is about Alternative Brewing not the grinder - is AB use Fastway Couriers. Which have to be the worst courier company known to mankind. For the love of God just use Australia Post. Had I known - I wouldn't have bought from AB.So, $200 flushed down the toilet and land fill inside of two days use.
With every manual apparatus known to man at home, it was difficult to upgrade to an automatic grinder. But when I broke my arm in May and it’s still currently immobilised due to lingering ligament damage, my husband was getting rsi doing all the grinding. After heaps of research I chose the Baratza Encore due to our small kitchen and good reviews. Whilst we have only used it so far for our Moccamaster (yes upgraded to automatic there too) it has been perfect. Consistent grinds, easy to clean, large hopper for big brews, and nice and small for our little kitchen.
I am super happy with this addition to my setup. Is it worth $60? Nah, it feels expensive. But does it make my life a bit nicer 3 times a day? Definitely. I make small strong flat whites at home, maybe 80-100ml milk. I struggled to get just 1 small cup's worth of nice creamy "microfoam" milk with a standard 600 ish ml jug. It was hard to get the nozzle at the right depth & time for the “vortex” with the right amount of milk for a cup, so there was either too much milk or it was too thin. This one does it perfectly! The size and shape really make it easy to get a great texture with no wastage. It’s a lovely object too, looks good and feels quality. A luxurious addition that I don’t regret.
I read all the info about how the grind was important, and grinding beans just before you use them was better. So I got this for home use, reasonable price for home use and spec sounded good. Well unboxing this machine, the weight of it and the build quality was far better than expected. This is a serious grinder, proper grind burr, settings control, and it just looks so good.Read the instructions for setup, wash the bowls etc, NOT the grind burr. The coffee bin might be a little tight to remove, there's no catch it just slides in/out. its got the control knob, silicon washer and brush in it for travel.Once all dry, set it up and have fun experimenting with the different grind grades to suit your taste. Does a good grinder make a difference, oh yeh! enjoy
Compact and solid. Easy to use with comprehensive instructions.Contrary to the AB description, I find this grinder definitely grinds fine enough for my espresso machine. It took a couple of trials to get the grind just right, but that was easily done. The grinds hopper seals into the unit which eliminates coffee grounds spreading everywhere as can happen with other machines that don't have integrated containers.Only 2 minor issues:1/ it's quite a noisy grinder2/ it's a little slower than my previous grinder (a cheap breville burr grinder).I'd recommend this unit. Good value for money. Feels rock solid. Does a great job.
