an extremely pale pink, soft yet resistant to breakage.
I use this as a "white" for charcoal drawing on toned paper. Most people don't recognize that it is not in fact white (one painter with a keen eye did notice it) but it helps tremendously to avoid the blue-green hue that can occur when charcoal mixes with titanium white. It is also quite resistant to breakage in spite of going on soft. I have tried other pastels for this purpose and both for colour and working properties, this is my favorite.... Show more

As vibrant as the photos
These are great for all stages of a pastel painting. They are extremely pigmented and larger in size than all of the other brands. You can break pieces off if you want a small shard for details but these are the best bang for your money. Some of the description photos look really vibrant but the pastels actually are grayer in person, the Mt. Vision are just like these pictures, even more vivid than in person. I would say that Mt. vision, Terry Ludwig, Diane Townsend's, Sennelier, Art Spectrum extra soft square, Great American, koh-I-noor and Schminke are the most pigmented soft pastels available to artists aside from Henri Roche which are very expensive and pure pigment with minimum binder, but worth it in my opinion. But I only use those for final touches. ... MoreThese are great for all stages of a pastel painting. They are extremely pigmented and larger in size than all of the other brands. The best pastel pencils are Caran D'ache, Faber Castle pitt , koh-I-noor Gioconda, Stabillo Car othello, Conte a paris, and Bruynzeel. None of the listed brands are in order of best to worst. They all have their purpose and place in the picture but Mt. Vision will work for just about every stage of the pastel painting or drawing, whatever you choose to call pastel artwork.... Show more

For sparkling highlights
#blicksweepstakes could add some sparkle to their advertising by using these pastels to highlight focal points. I used it for a hummingbird's iridescent feathers, and to add some shock to the shock of white hair in a portrait of an elderly gentleman. The colors are beautiful, texture is soft, but not crumbly.... Show more

Good product. Great service!
The quality of chalk is GREAT to work with. Spreads and blends nicely! This specific set really allows for some great contrast in value and color saturation through a nice range of bright and saturated colors, or deeper tones. Well worth the price. Additionally, there was a bit of a mix up when I had originally ordered this, and customer service was absolutely wonderful to amend the error! There was a chance that the mix up would delay the delivery of the product, and I was working on a project with a tight time deadline, so customer service had the parcel overnighted to me. Mistakes happen, but a company that does what they can to remedy any inconvenience speaks volumes about their integrity! Great job to the Blick customer service team, and thank you for providing ... Great product and customer service
I've used Mount Vision pastels before and this purchase was to replenish a few pastels that I had used up. I love the soft and somewhat gritty texture and the colors are extra rich and appear to glow from the paper. I ordered 5 different colors but one of them was a bit crushed when I received it. I contacted Blick and they immediately sent me another one. They did a fantastic job of making sure I had everything I ordered and received in perfect condition. #sweepstakes... Show more

I would be hesitant, just because of the fragility.
I love Mount Vision Pastels. Definitely some of the best out there. The only problem is that I expected them to be all in one piece. And 9 out of the 25 pieces arrived snapped in half. And I didn't want to snap them. The way I Intend to use them is whole. Other than that everything else was fine. I bought multiple brands and all arrived intact. I think it might be because of the shape of these pastels that they are a bit more delicate. Maybe more bubble wrap is needed.... Show more

Love these pastels!
My first purchase of Mt. Vision pastels was a very pleasant surprise. The sticks are huge in comparison to many other brands and their size feels quite comfortable in my hand, whether it's 1/3 of a stick or the whole pastel. There is a bit of grit to the pigment, but it lays down beautifully and can be easily blended with your finger without leaving residual streaks underneath. Detail work is not what these pastels are apparently for, but you can cover a large amount of space (without much pressure) in short order with them. The pigments are rich in tone and the bright oranges, yellows, reds and blues I purchased look lovely on my pastel paper. One other thing I discovered, if you take a wet paintbrush to the stick (I did this with a bright red) the pigment ... MoreMy first purchase of Mt. Vision pastels was a very pleasant surprise. I did this to add a decorative symbol on a finished work with pleasing results. There are a few reviews of Mt. Vision Pastels found on YouTube. These helped me make my decision to try them. It's worth taking a look before you decide.... Show more

Some arrived crumbled in the box and a number of them broken
Disappointed with the crumbled parts since these were not inexpensive for me to purfhase. Two of the dark pastels looked exactly the same even when used them on good sanded paper they looked identical. Gave it a 3 rating b/c some were crumbled in the box... and selected "average" in the other places since I could not submit this review unless I selected one of the options.. I've been using them despite the way they arrived. The larger broken pieces are okay, just the ones that crumbled saddened me. I'm new to pastels and can't offer much of a comparison except to Sennelier and those are much more creamy when applied but I knew Mount Vision would be not as soft. They only others I;ve used are Faber-Castell and those are much harder and not as vibrant. I think maybe ... Blicks prices are good, just the pastel itself may be overpriced in my opinion which should be taken with a grain of salt I guess.... Show more

The workhorse of my collection
There is so much to love about MV. SOOOO many colors available, huge stick = huge value. Soft enough but with a bit of grit that grabs the paper (either Canson or Uart sanded). They do blend well if you like to blend. Can put down multiple layers of color without filling the tooth. Performs well from start to finish. Strong darks, beautiful lights, and rich, bright or subdued mid-tones. Consistent softness between colors. Seldom have I had them break/flake/split/crumble on me. I also have the dark iridescent set which gets some use on abstracts and underpainting for luminous looks. #sweepstakes... Show more

Vivid!
I bought the tropicals set this time and they are so vivid! This set is a bit more fragile than others I've purchased from this line. I suggest asking for extra bubble wrap. I have ordered a lot of individual mount vision pastels and really enjoy their pastels. They are a beautiful product, blend well and are a great value. For me they sit in firmness somewhere between a Unison and a Rembrandt. Softer than a Rembrandt but great for under and midlayer buildup. The pastels are large and chunky which is really nice for covering large areas. I highly recommend them. #sweepstakes... Show more
