Such an awesome and essential piece of gear. It goes with me everywhere because of its convenience. Two gripes however, the lid does not stay on very well, so I don't trust leaving ground in there for travel (not saying that the purpose was such, I just do it out of convenience and use a rubber band to secure it). Secondly it is slightly too wide for my Hydroflask (resulting in occasional spills when I have to yank it out and it is slightly too narrow for my Yeti mug so finding the correct mug to fit was a challenge. Still a stellar product.

The metal mesh is durable and presumably one does not need to be concerned with micro plastic particles being introduced into one’s hot drink, as a plastic/nylon filter might do. However, the holes on the filter are a little bigger than ones made of nylon. For tea, this is perfectly acceptable. For finely ground coffee, this can lead to more particulate (or sludge) getting through and into your coffee mug, particularly if you are putting the coffee grounds into the Mug Mate and pouring the boiling water over top, and stirring with a spoon. I found a reasonable solution as follows: boil water in your kettle/pot, remove from heat and add coffee grounds directly into kettle/pot (or mix in another container). Stir with a spoon if you wish. Let steep for a couple minutes. Place Mug Mate filter into your desired mug, then pour water/coffee mixture from your kettle/pot into your mug via the Mug Mate filter. Do not stir with a spoon in the Mug Mate; simply lift filter out of mug and let remaining coffee drain out of the filter. Voila! This method will produce a stronger brewed coffee and you will capture more grounds in the filter. I prefer this coffee over a paper filter which I find strips away the bitterness and oils; using a mesh filter produces a more complex flavour - but if you prefer a smoother flavour, consider a method which uses a paper filter (such as a Java Drip or Aeropress).

Here is a nice tool if you want some real coffee on the trail. I bought a titanium travel mug that is about the size of a normal coffee cup. This sits right on the lip. Although it almost touches the bottom it still works just fine for a pour and a normal strength cup of coffee. It is small and light enough for backpacking. The only gripe I have is that the two little holders don't snap down, so this guy doesn't fit inside the cup (now that would be cool and way handy for packing).

Light and makes a pretty good cup of coffee. Upgraded from the gsi french press mug as I didn't like the plastic taste, this does a much better job. Only complaint is its a little bulky and looks like its breakable but been great so far.
I bought one of these because I drink a lot of loose leaf tea. I use it at home and while camping. I love that this is so well made and please keep making it. By the way I have seen some comments regarding the tea lid. The lid is where you set the filter after you brew the tea..ie flip the lid and set your basket in it. Just saying
Pros:- Makes coffee- Lightweight- Mesh appears highly durable- Very easy to clean, coffee grounds fall right off the mesh with a little water- Not a french-press accessory, keeps the jetboil clean and freeCons:- Lid fits quite loose and does not really serve a purpose- Inconvenient to pack- Could get damaged easilyI think this must be intended to be packed inside a mug. Otherwise I think the mesh would be difficult to protect in a backpack. Bit of a pain as I like to bring a double wall mug w/ lid during winter and shoulder seasons. Perhaps some customization will be needed.
No grounds or chunks of chaga or tea leaves . I steep my ground coffee beans in the strainer. Also use for dandelion tea and pine needles. It's just a nice way to have a clean drink. Haven't yet but could use it to clean up really dirty water, before filtering.
I purchased the MugMate a few years ago. I stopped using it shortly after purchase. I found it easier to make instant. Well, after drinking subpar coffee for a few years, I brought it out of storage and am glad I did. Coffee is so much better. Richer and deeply flavorful. I use coffee that’s already ground, and it does leave dregs. I’ll experiment cutting a paper filter to fit. The MugMate is now included in my backpack.
This is a great little filter. I use it backpacking, front country camping, traveling, and at work. Using the ears on the flange, it hangs on the rim of most standard size cups. In this method, I use it as a hybrid pour over/immersion (French press style) system. I pour water through coarsly ground beans until the cup is almost full, then I let it sit for a few minutes. This coffee is really good. It also wedges into the top of a standard wide mouth of a Nalgene or Klean Kanteen, and works as a standard pour over. It looks like it will leak, but it all drains down into the beast. It doesn't take a lot of space in the pack because it nests in your cup. It also weighs very little, and the only waste it generates is coffee grinds, which in many places can be buried in ... MoreThis is a great little filter. It also weighs very little, and the only waste it generates is coffee grinds, which in many places can be buried in a cathole like human waste. The only downside I have discovered is that it can be water intensive to full wash out. In the backcountry I usually just get it to a 80 percent clean and call it good.
Filter Works great but cap/lid is useless-doesnt fit onto filter. I wonder what purpose it serves? I use it at home now for my am coffee. Quicker and simpler way to brew nice dark coffee vs. coffee pot or Kuerig with messy K cup waste issues.
