This is a really cool hammer but after using it on my first camping trip there’s two things I really wish it had. The first is a hook to pull tent stakes. It’s not too bad to use the claw of the hammer but it’s not optimal as it can slide off the stakes when pulling. The second feature that would be really nice is a leather cover or pouch. The claws are fairly sharp and could easily rip a hole in fabric so I didn’t want to pack it with my tent. Other than that it’s fairly lightweight yet very solid.

A quality piece of equipment. My second one. How many times has this MSR hammer helped me get the tent stakes anchored into difficult pieces of ground. I don't go camping without it. Very durable. Impossible to break. Has inspired many cheaper imitations. Have been able to buy it at discount when MSR products are on sale making it an even better buy. Get one. It will not disappoint.

This hammer was an excellent size for us to pack with our tent right in the tent bag. It’s really wonderful for extracting the metal steamed we use. It’s very ergonomic and felt great for both putting the steaks in and taking them out. It didn’t slip and was easy to hit the steaks exactly where I wanted to. Buuuuuuut, it’s too light. While it is weighted so it Alfred’s good in your hand, it didn’t have enough weight to help drive in steaks when they were in rougher ground or more rocky environments. I often had to use a rock to help drive the steaks in. It wouldn’t take much more weight to make this more effective. GAME CHANGER

I love this thing. I had been using my old faithful rubber mallet for years. I bought this and the MSR groundhog stakes. The hammer works awesome driving them deep BUT still being able to pull them out easily. I will say, critique of the stakes not the hammer, the stakes almost need the hammer. I ripped up my finger trying to pull a half driven stake by hand. But that proves that the hammer is driving them in and making it much much easier (and blood free) to remove.

Great stake hammer to have on hand!
26 September 2022

As a retired builder, I've swung many a hammer during my life, so when I purchased the MSR hammer I was a bit sceptical but having now used it I am convinced this is perfect for my kit for both camping and backpacking. For camping I usually pack my old 23oz framing hammer which is not conducive for the backpack though. At 11oz, the MSR is perfect and far better on hands than a rock. It is well balanced and the claw end easily pulls fussy stakes and multitasks for digging cat holes. The peened head surface helps keep the hammer from slipping from the stake like a framing hammer from a nailhead. I am quite pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it.

I previously scoffed at the idea of getting this hammer, assuming I could always just find a rock. It turns out, there's a hand-sized rock shortage on a lot of trails and at many campsites, and a typical toolkit hammer isn't going to work on your stakes. A hatchet was also an interesting idea, but the prospect of accidentally cutting my fingers off was a bit off-putting (and the weight distribution of the hatchet really didn't facilitate hammering). In terms of hammering, this hammer does it well: it's light, the weight distribution is right, and it drives stakes into solid ground *very* well. The prongs on the back are perfect for pulling out stakes (which the cord on the bottom could also be used for if your stakes don't have cords), and would make for a great ... MoreI previously scoffed at the idea of getting this hammer, assuming I could always just find a rock. Also, you could probably use it as a meat tenderizer if you really wanted to, but that's probably unsanitary.

MSR Stake Hammer

This hammer is great. I have had two of the plastic/nylon hammers. They do not last as long driving aluminum stakes. I have used several times now in softer soil with tree roots and no rocks. The MSR hammer has a good handle for grip. Head has enough weight to drive stakes. The claw grabs the stake to pull from the ground. I have used with different brands of aluminum stakes. Fits great into a pack.

The Most Elegant of Hammers
21 September 2020

I bought this hammer on a whim, but also because it looks like a hammer Apple would make if they did make hammers. It does have a beauty to it.The hammer though does what it needs to do. It will hammer in tent stakes. I use MSR Groundhogs and it does the job on those. It also can pull them out too, like, you know, A HAMMER.And now we come to my two complaints about it. One is justifying its existence in your backpack. Sure, a rock isn't awesome to use for getting tent stakes in, but it also isn't something you have to carry with you in your backpack that weighs over half a pound and takes up space. The other complaint I have is long term durability. The handle is hollow and the head is bound to it by a single pin. It feels very sturdy, but I don't know how long ... MoreI bought this hammer on a whim, but also because it looks like a hammer Apple would make if they did make hammers. If you're going for ultralight, you're not on this product page, even considering this thing, but if you want some convivence with getting your tent stakes in and out with some minor weight and volume cost, you could do worse than this hammer.

Useful and lightweight and seems sturdy

Have used this on three different styles of tent pegs in at least three different ground terrains. It is significantly better than trying to use the back of your hatchet, and night and day better than trying to find a rock to hammer your tent pegs in, with. It worked well with flat top tent stakes, rounded metal wire tent pegs, and even 12" steel nails. It didn't feel like it had that much heft when I was using it on hard packed gravel. But it still got the job done. It's hard to _want_ a backpacking hammer to be any heavier because you have to _carry_ it. And I'm not sure that I want this hammer to be any heavier. But, when I was using it to hammer things I wished the head was 100 g heavier or 50 g heavier, but, then carrying it around, I appreciated how light it ... MoreHave used this on three different styles of tent pegs in at least three different ground terrains. But, when I was using it to hammer things I wished the head was 100 g heavier or 50 g heavier, but, then carrying it around, I appreciated how light it was.I consider that it might be better than a hatchet to hammer stuff in; it even means you could drop the axe, carry this hammer, and a big knife, and use the big knife on wood. Knives are more versatile than a small hatchet, and, could cut down a bit of weight off your overall kit by dropping the small hatchet behind. I have to say that the removal function to pull pegs out, with the claw, is as useful as the hammering experience, which is good. All told I'm happy that I have it, though there is one complaint that I have which is easy to fix, and not everyone would like it, is that I wished that the handle felt grippier. The problem is if you score the metal somehow to create a rough abrasive surface, that's also going to give you blisters. So the handle feels pretty good, but when my hand was wet, pulling pegs out in the rain, I felt like it was a little slippier than I would have liked. But I'm not sure if that's something that this company should have to deal with. Things are slippery when they are wet. All I'm saying is that when I'm holding my (different tool) hatchet handle, which is a rough plastic, I don't feel like I get blisters, and I feel like I have more positive control over the tool. Maybe I'll use hockey tape or something. All said, I'm going to start using this in place of a hatchet FOR THE PURPOSE of TENT PEG INSERTIONS and REMOVAL, (not for chopping wood). LOLIt's great for car camping as well. Or if you're car camping, you could use this for your tent, and a full size axe for wood, and leave that little dinky hatchet at home.Big fan.

Works very well for crushing ice
5 April 2023

I use this hammer for a rather unusual purpose. When buying ice cube bags to fill Nalgene bottles as a way to keep a cooler cold, it is easy to find ice cubes that are too big to fit into a Nalgene bottle. This MSR hammer works extremely at crushing those big ice cubes into smaller ones. Then I just scoop the ice and put it into the bottle. So easy! I find electric coolers limited in the sense they are better at keeping "cold foods cold" and NOT so good at making "warm foods cold". Can't go wrong with filling Nalgene bottles with ice !
