I just fell inlove with the design. It is such a robust cooker compared to 4 other cookers I use for my hikes. So I never have to worry too much of it breaking any time soon.Sure, it is a little loud. But its efficiency and practicality far outweigh the the problems of a little bit of sound.If you are looking for a very quiet burner, do not look at Multifuel burners in general. You are looking at the completely wrong direction. These cookers (particularly this one) are here not just to pack a mightly punch, but to get the job done in no time and efficiently.(Plus, I can easily see how much fuel remains in the bottle without having to do a bouyancy test unlike gas cartidges)

First of all, being a real nimrod when it comes to practical skills, this stove is right down my ally. It’s easy to operate and it’s easy to maintain whenever needed. I know that for some the noise level produced by XGK is a bit to loud, but to me it’s like a dinner bell ringing. I actually enjoy the sound of a stove doing what it does best!So it powerful, easy to maintain, but it’s loud.I once had an issue of leakage from the pump that was due to the colored o-ring in the vent. It started to flake off its painted red color. Once I had the o-ring replaced with a new one off of the maintenance kit, and rubbed off the colored painting (and oiled the o-ring) it went back to its normal functionality.I bring this up because it’s necessary for other buyers to be aware ... Bought my first MSR XGK in 1982. It's been everywhere from Alaska to the Himalaya, burning anything resembling fuel. Cranks out more heat than a kitchen stove burner. The new one for my bugout bag is even better than the old one. Flexible fuel line means the failure mode of the old one is fixed (metal fatigue cracks fuel tube weld at burner cup), and the new one is more compact. I suspect the new XGK will outlast me... Tip for simmering at a low heat: keep fuel valve 3/4 open to prevent flame-out, but do not pump the stove to full pressure: takes practice but it works. Mostly though this is a stove to melt snow and boil it FAST: beats everything else in the backpacking category by a wide margin. Sit it on a cheap hot plate when cooking if the surface underneath ... Bought in 2017 from MEC. This stove has worked reliably ever since. Now, 2023 it still works like it did when new. I have only ever burned White-Gas in this stove, but having the ability to burn pretty much any other fuel type makes this a "buy-it-once" item. Yes, it's not cheap. Thankfully, in this case you really do get what you pay for. Reliability, ease of use and maintenance. Just make sure to pick up the maintenance kit as well. It does come with some parts, but the extra maintenance kit is a good investment. Better to buy it at the same time and just keep that kit in the carry bag that comes with the stove.
After 52yrs of Mountaineering at age 72 I'm starting to slow down a bit. Not my MSR X-GK and MSR XGK-EX stoves. At -30F to a summer hike, these are my stoves, period. They now find there spot in my Go-Bags. I've burned paint thinner, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel, lamp oil and olive oil. Currently store 55gal drum of refined diesel. Couple "O-rings" and a squirt of oil is all I've ever done. Easy to use, maintain and operate. I've used every stove ever made. Bar none pilgrim, "these are the best!"
I own several iterations of this stove, from the model G of the late 70s, to the XGK II of the late 80s/early 90s and the current one. They all work flawlessly today because they're simply designed and allow for reasonably upkeep in the field and at home. Their strength is also their weakness: that they're build well and thus heavier than some options (though the G is shockingly light thanks to simpler pot supports, smaller overall size, and no looping generator), and they don't have a secondary valve/spindle like the Dragonfly or Polaris to throttle the fuel to allow simple simmering. That said, you can mimic a decent simmer with careful light pumping and small increments at the fuel valve. This isn't for everyone, though, and complaints about the stove having ... This is a niche stove. If you only summer camp and have no need for multifuels, stick to isobutane canister stoves, they are the best option. If you winter camp in negative temperatures or need to be able to use diesel, gas, kerosene or white gas in your stove, then this is why you buy a XGK. Don't expect granular control for simmering your gourmet camp meal, but if you need water on your winter overnight trip and the only option is melting snow, this is your stove.

Camp with scouts at high adventure bases, and found the durability of Wisperlite stoves was lacking. We typically camp in groups of 8-12 and do one pot meals. The XGK is a bit more weight, but worth it for several reasons: 1) Construction is robust and can better handle/balance the heavier weight and can stand up to scout abuse. 2) It is easier to start and operate due to auditory feedback. It will let you know when starting when you have to turn the white gas on. 3) It is definitely louder than a Whisperlite, but I like being able to hear when it is on. It helps myself and the youth leader know that cooking has started.

I own canister stoves but increasingly opt to carry a few extra ounces in order to avoid single use and throwaway. For a few cents you can refill the fuel bottle at any gas station worldwide. Very solid build and uber dependable under all conditions. Not for the ultralight crowd, but not everyone is ultralight all the time. Great for base camp, bike touring, car camping or anytime weight isn't a huge priority. I think everyone should have one for that "just in case moment".
