NAD D 3020 Hybrid Digital Amplifier

(19 reviews)

NAD D 3020 Hybrid Digital Amplifier, the original NAD 3020 introduced a generation of Music Lovers to true high fidelity sound. The term High Fidelity literally means “true to the original”. In the ‘70’s over a million people rediscovered their music when they placed a NAD 3020 between their turntable and their loudspeakers. This little gem could embarrass amplifiers costing 10 times more with its big, warm and detailed sound. Once people realized what they had been missing it lead them to a lifetime of enhanced musical enjoyment.

Awesome amp!

All of the praise and awards this amp has won is well deserved! I'm a bit of a audio enthusiast who has owned a variety of amps such as Adcom and Hafler among others. This amp more than holds its own against amps 5 times the price. Don't be fooled by the low output specs. This amp will drive the most difficult speaker loads without breaking a sweat. Very musical and can be used with a variety of devices. NAD has been producing audiophile gear at budget prices for years and this amp carries on that tradition with pride.

Years ago I owned an NAD amp and pre-amp as the core of my stereo system. So when I recently decided to put a music system in my office, I was glad to see that NAD had a "modern" option to consider. After reading a number of favorable reviews across several websites, I decided to purchase it ... and I haven't been disappointed one bit.I use the D-3020 with a Sonos Connect and a pair of reference monitors. It is compact, attractive, and the perfect companion for the Sonos. Bluetooth works great too (although I don't use this much). Most important, the sound is amazing, whether set for normal or high volumes ... very crisp. The D-3020 is pricey, but I only purchase top-quality electronics for my home, and I'm very satisfied.

I wanted a very good sounding, small system, that would sound great at low, or high volumes, but wouldn't thump my wife and son too much in our smallish space. I have a couple options for loud, shake the walls kind of listening. I am using this with a Mac and iTunes and a pair of MatinLogan Motion 4 speakers. No subwoofer, no bass boost turned on. Neither the amp nor the speakers need extra bass for my purpose. But, I love reggae and rock, and more, so bass is important to me. The bass is perfectly clear, and detailed, in perfect proportion to the crystal clear mids and highs. I was going to get a larger, more expensive amp, but went for this one for the size and price, and hope that it would sound excellent. It does sound fabulous. But, it doesn't seem to affect the performance at all, and hopefully it won't affect the life span. The remote I would give 2 stars, but that is too insignificant to lower the overall stars. Hopefully the remote will last at least several years before dying. But, I am super pleased with this purchase.

Its an interesting Amplifer. It has a beautiful British sound. Reminds me a little of the 70's PioneerSX sound. Best i can describe the tone a rebuilt one has is like Angels Breath With Sprinkles. Its a Class A amp.and you can tell a big difference between it and a Class A/B. 20watts per channel in a Class A is nothing to scoff at. This Amp and its mysterious circuitry. Anybody thats anybody knows this is not just another Amplifer. Only a Serviced Nad 3020 will guarantee satisfaction. If you buy used and expect it to work like it did in 1978 its not going to happen. It may be small but its power and sound will amaze and inspire any audio enthusiast to reexamine the meaning of Love. Nad 3020 was and still is a leader in affordable audiophile quality sound. The 3020s place in history will forever be remembered as the audio version of Daivid meets Goliath.

Great compact, audiophile system with integrated DAC and Bluetooth
11 May 2017

I bought this for my bedroom to power bookshelf speakers -- PSB Alpha 1 B. Plays more than loud enough and sound is quite dynamic. The integrated DAC is antiquated as computer chips of this sort quickly become obsolete. So I use the analogue in with an better external DAC which in turn is connected via USB to my Surface Pro. It's a nice compact system which fits on the desktop. It also powers high impedance headphones like Sennheiser HD 650s, etc. I think the full list retail of $499 is too high but I purchased at a modest discount from eBay seller.

Legendary or Mythical ?
28 January 2017

Either way it's a fabulous sound. Like warm honey. I'm over 70 and have the high frequency hearing loss which comes with age and also suffer from tinitus! I wanted and amp which would penetrate the tinitus and compensate for the hearing loss without sounding artificial. This does it in spades. Electronically it seems beyond reproach but the physical build quality is not great. The fascia is thin and easily damaged. Rear panel connections are only nickel plated and seem fairly budget and it's all held together with self tapping screws. All the quality seems to have been lavished 'under the hood'. I have seen comments to the effect that there is nothng on the market today which can touch it at it's typical asking price (arouund 100+) and I wouldn't argue. As they are 40 years old now try and get a refurbished one with some sort of guarantee. My first one was faulty but the vendor, Neil Hodgson, immediateley replaced it and bent over backwards to ensure my full satisfaction.

Nice to revisit this little gem
7 June 2017

My restored version (from neilhdgson130110) is beautiful. Married to a pair of Royds it has a massive, clean quality which really impresses. Only niggle: There is quite a bit of cross-talk (between Aux and Tuner) but I seem to recall this was always a problem with the 3020. Not a big deal as we're trained to switch off unused equipment nowadays.

Outstanding HI Fi classic amp.
13 January 2019

Owned on of these from new since the mid 80's. Tried a few others but this is the best, outstanding classic. The first thing I would do is replace the all metal jumpers from pre amp to amp on the back with oxygen free gold plated studio quality cable, you will be amazed at the difference in sound quality! Have it set up with a 1974 Tensai turntable and eltax symphony 6s. Amazing for the money!

WOW !

The amplifier in question came to me in very bad condition , both aesthetic and electronic equipment. There was no bridge connecting the preamp from the amplifier stage and it was filthy . The volume control was loose and that of the tone and balance croaked . I've done a little restoration returning the amp all the luster and glory it deserves! I would say it is well worth a little effort and even if I had to spend another 20 euro for " clean " and restore it I'd say it was worth it . The 3020 is an amplifier in some ways unbelievable. Amazing that such a project and realized economic savings (just look at the condensatorini filter feeding ) can still defend with honor in nearly twenty years later . Amazing that such a project and realized economic savings (just look at the condensatorini filter feeding ) can still defend with honor in nearly twenty years later . The comparison with similar amps , his peers , is impossible : the 3020 literally shredded the competition. No wonder I've had the success it has had. The difference with competitors was simply unfair . The comparison with its modern successors ? Well , a little ' ungenerous : a Rotel 920 AX (the cheapest of the family) is better than him to detail , cleanliness, precision and speed. But the 3020 has a character and a feeling that over the years is a bit ' lost . That little bit of personality that makes it unique and inimitable , even with its limitations. The Board , therefore, is: if you find it used , at a reasonable price and buy it . You save it to an inglorious end , and could help you build an implanted with spending almost nothing, and the sound of class.

Well made amplifier with very average performance.

Many years ago (90's) a friend of mine bought an Onkyo amplifier. I bought my NAD 3020i shortly afterwards so I had a chance to compare them. All I can say is the NAD sounded very boring against the Onkyo. The Onkyo produced delicate sweet treble with an amazingly tight and controlled bass, it simply blew me away. The NAD on the other hand was no better than most Pioneer and Sony amps around at the time. In fact I was living in South Africa at the time and all my equipment was stolen one day. With the insurance money I bought a 'made in Holland' Philips micro system which sounded amazing and that gave the NAD a run for it's money!! No audiophile will look twice at NAD. It did give me some pleasure but I actually lost interest in music for a while with my boring NAD. ... MoreMany years ago (90's) a friend of mine bought an Onkyo amplifier. It did give me some pleasure but I actually lost interest in music for a while with my boring NAD. It wasn't until Home theatre systems became popular that I gained interest again. Then I built up an expensive surround system that also got stolen!! Funny enough with the insurance money I bought a NAD surround sound amplifier as I thought the extra power might improve the sound. However that was equally disappointing.
